Save the Palestinian children NOW!
Save the Palestinian children NOW!

Since September 28, 2000:

• 383 Palestinian children (under the age of 18) have been killed by the Israeli army and Israeli settlers, i.e. almost 19% of the total Palestinians killed (figure at 21 November 2002);
• Approximately 36% of total Palestinians injured (estimated at more than 41,000) are children;
• 86 of these children were under the age of ten:
• 21 infants under the age of 12 months have been killed:
• 500 Palestinian children have been permanently disabled due to Israeli attacks.

383?

04.04.2006 09:51

Multiply that by about 1000 and you'll get the number of children killed in Darfur.

Durafur? Where's that?

Just because someone is drawing awareness to 383 children dying in Palestine it doesn't imply ignorance to autrocites elsewhere, unlike you, who seems to imply we ignore one bloodbath for another.

Half a million deaths irrelevant?

04.04.2006 14:55

I feel sorry for you, if that's the way you feel.

Yes, people die - on both sides - in Palestine/Israel (although it's not quite as simplistic as often portrayed).

Is it irrelevant that mnay thousands more are dying elsewhere, completely overlooked by posters on Indymedia? Not entirely [check out Zimbabwe, for another example].

But I suppose no Jews or Zionists are involved in the other cases.

"Sceptic", if you'd like to talk about those other conflicts, that's great. Start a new thread, and we'll discuss it there. On this thread, the subject is the loss of Palestinian children, due to Zionism's decades-long War On Palestine.

Zionism, Irrelevant Within A Generation

Irrelevant to this post you fool

04.04.2006 21:50

It is true that the suffering of children in Darfur and Zimbabwe should be highlighted on Indymedia. But it is bulshit that when people post against the Israeli state it is anti-Semitic as many Jewish people think what the Israeli stateis doing to children is appalling.

Unfortunaly today more Palestinian children suffer

04.04.2006 22:10

"Israeli shells on Tuesday also killed a Palestinian in the north of the strip after rocket attacks on the Jewish In the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiyeh, separate Israeli fire killed at least one person and wounded about seven others, including several in a house, Palestinian security officials said. One of those wounded in the house was a four-month-old girl, Reuters television pictures showed."

They suffered a lot last century, but now they have lost my sympathy. Hurting innocent children cannot be justified.

noapologies

why palestine? why darfur?

05.04.2006 08:46

sceptic, does it ever occur to you that many activists on here are involved with palestine instead of the suffering of Darfur, not because of any anti-semitic reasons or comparison of suffering, but because "our" own governments are actively supporting Israel's killing and occupation of Palestinians.

What is happening in Darfur is terrible - everybody agrees. I do, my friends do, my fellow activists do, but so does Tony Blair, so does William Hague (just back from a visit) and George Bush. Sure, we can put more pressure on our government to do more to stop it (just yesterday i signed a petition for more sanctions against the sudan government) but generally the frame of argument is along the same lines.

On the other hand I think what is happening to the Palestinian people is appalling. However, in this case my elected representatives ally themselves with the oppressors and actively support the subjugation of Palestine. Therefore I simply feel that my limited time and energy can be of more use and impact if spent fighting this injustice rather than the one in Darfur.

This is not to suggest that Palestine suffers more than Darfur (or that it doesnt) - its simply a matter of which battle I feel I can have the biggest impact on. If you think we can fight all the struggles in the world then ask yourself why you used the example of Darfur, when (terrible as it is) there are even more children dying in Northern Uganda or DR Congo - yet the world, including all the people criticising Palestinian activists for ignoring Darfur, is pretty much silent.

"after rocket attacks"

05.04.2006 11:51

A palestinian was killed, which will no doubt be added to the statistics. Then I read the reason: after a rocket attack on a Jewish town. If you launch rockets, you shouldn't be surprised if something wicked your way comes.

"our own governments are actively supporting Israel's killing".

You might see it that way, others don't. Israel was created by the United Nations. It defends its territory in the way that most other countries do.

The other question is: why are there refugee camps forty or fifty years on? Most of the people in those camps will have never set foot in Israel, yet claim it as theirs.

Do we support the Polish Government? Yes. Look at the 1939 and 1945 stats for the population of Gdansk [aka Danzig]. Millions - literally millions - of Germans were moved from Eastern Europe. How many refugee camps are there in Germany? Would you support a German who went to Gdansk and said: "This was my grandfather's house. Can I have it back?"

There are moral arguments both for and against Israel. However, the issue might become a little clearer if those in favour of the destruction of Israel as a country were a little less blatantly rascist.

"Most of the people in those camps will have never set foot in Israel, yet claim it as theirs."

Hmmm, isnt that pretty much the definition of Zionism?

The reason many of them have never set foot in "Israel" is because the Israeli government refused right from the start to ever let them back. The reason? They are Arabs not Jewish. And to think you accuse others of racism!!!

You make my point for me

05.04.2006 15:47

If the land currently occupied by Israel somehow becomes Palestine, with a Muslim majority, do you think Jews will be welcome there? I somehow doubt it. That's the point I'm making - when two sets of people claim the same land, the result is going to be very messy. Pointing fingers at one side or the other is not helpful. Which brings me back to my original point: why is so much attention given on Indymedia to one side of a very knotty question, and absoultely zero to far more blatant cases of genocide and misappropriation. Tibet, anyone?

complicity requires priorities

05.04.2006 20:52

>If the land currently occupied by Israel somehow becomes Palestine, with a Muslim majority, do you think Jews will be welcome there? I somehow doubt it.

It was and they were for a long long time, which is a historical fact that only partially disproves your point. And the Jews who lived in Palestine thoughout that period rejected the Israeli state in '48 - Naturei Kartei anyone?

>That's the point I'm making - when two sets of people claim the same land, the result is going to be very messy.

True. We should be breaking down the false walls between people, we all share the same land.

>Pointing fingers at one side or the other is not helpful.

It is often necessary. Justice starts with accusation.

>Which brings me back to my original point: why is so much attention given on Indymedia to one side of a very knotty question, and absoultely zero to far more blatant cases of genocide and misappropriation. Tibet, anyone?

Think globally, act locally. 'Our governement's' are not susbsidising the brutal and illegal occupation of Tibet, though they may be condoning and ignoring it. They or they thier allies and overlords are subsidising the occupation of Palestine. We have more responsibility to right our own wrongs than other nations wrongs. I think we should concentrate more on Israel than Tibet, and more on Iraq than Israel. That doesn't imply I condone Tibet.

PS I had already posted that cartoon here, under the same thread as the last one published here, and the cartoon above this one now is poor by comparison. It would be nice to just post under similar posts when similar posts are still visible, else actual calls to actions disappear too suddenly to be effective. It doesn't aid the Palestinians or IM to post too often on the same subejct on new threads.
