Should the petition fail

Why not kidnap John Reid and arrange a prisoner exchange, one war-hero for one war-monger ?

To suggest it is possible to petition those who have commited our armed forces to genocide against the proven will of the majority is more than hopeful, it's irrationally hopeful.

If you aren't up to kidnap, persuade and inform strangers who may be decent rather than the vanity of thinking you can influence those who Kendall-Smith himself compares to the Nazi reich.

It's like recommending 1933 Jews to write to Himmler demanding better treatment for prisoners. It is sweet but it isn't rational. The heroic german opposition to the nazis was divided between the White Rose pacifists who staged nvda at best, and the anarchists, communists and disillusioned nationalists who took often violent direct action. For the most part they all ended up in the death camps anyway but in retrospect only violent opposition to genocide seems to have had any chance of success.

Hmmm...

Yeah the petition is unlikely to change the world, but for the cost of a couple of mouseclicks people get to register their stance.

Yeah, some sort of solidarity action would be good too.

Comparing the situation to Nazi Germany is a tad over the top as is the suggestion that VIOLENT direct action would be a reasonable reponse= more Daily Mail column inches on thugs and rent-a-mob.

If chucking shit and beating people is all you have to offer then please stay at home because you are a counterproductive liability and not any significant alternative to the state.

better over the top than under the thumb

-Yeah the petition is unlikely to change the world, but for the cost of a couple of mouseclicks people get to register their stance.
True, but if you click too many mouse clicks you might start to think you are actually doing something other than salving your conscience.

-Yeah, some sort of solidarity action would be good too.
So if I kidnap John Reid can we store him at your house ?

-Comparing the situation to Nazi Germany is a tad over the top as is the suggestion that VIOLENT direct action would be a reasonable reponse= more Daily Mail column inches on thugs and rent-a-mob.

The comparison to Nazi Germany was Kendall Smiths. It was a completely logical, intelligent and above all accurate comparison to explain the rules of legitimate disobedience, and not in the least ott. Kidnap is violent direct action but it can be a mild form of violence, less violent than sending someone to prison. I would post a toenail clipping to identify John Reid is our prisoner rather than a toe, don't worry about your carpets.

-If chucking shit and beating people is all you have to offer then please stay at home because you are a counterproductive liability and not any significant alternative to the state.

I am not pretending to be an alternative to the state and I don't recommend chucking shit and beating people, nor any indiscrimate or thoughtless violence. I do recommend targetted assasination of Blair and his cabinet simply because I doubt we will be able to kidnap them all let alone one of them. It is a last resort to help prevent the next world war and as warning to other war-mongering tyrants. Nuremberg permits this when legal and peaceful options to prevent illegal war have failed. Hitlers failed assasins were retrospectively pardoned and honoured. Our state may seem quite mild to you but it is genocidal abroad, using torture, chemical weapons, cluster bombs and radioactive waste on defenceless people to steal their resources. What will you respond in thirty years when someone asks 'what did you do to prevent your states genocide ?' Blair sending our soldiers to war with only 8% support is the biggest failure of democracy since Mussolini, and he should suffer the same fate for his complicity in genocide.
Are you aware more Iraqis have been killed by US/UK sanctions, invasions and occuption over the past 15 years than died in the Rwandan genocide ? Is your level of opposition really morally appropriate ?
