Dead? Who created the story of Al Zarqawi?

Foreign Press Foundation - Henk Ruyssenaars | 09.06.2006 11:22 | Analysis | Globalisation | Repression | World

It's probably a surprise for many, but this most sought after terrorist, al Zarqawi, was never on the FBI's list of the '10 Most wanted'. Nor on the FBI's list of 'most wanted terrorists'. ('Links' below) - With a reward of $25 million - like Osama bin Laden - on his head? Didn't they want him?

NEVER BELIEVE A GOVERNMENT, UNTIL THEY START DENYING.

by Henk Ruyssenaars - 10 years correspondent in the Arab World.

FPF - June 9th - 2006 - In the propaganda war concerning the US 'war theater', the now as slain presented Abu Musab al Zarqawi was made #1 in this bloody 'Grand Guignol' drama of compounded horror. And for the CIA, as so often, the effect was a 'blowback'. Al Zarqawi was by the US and collaborators blamed for so many atrocities everywhere, in the people's fight against the occupying US 'Coalition of the Killing', that he became one of the most popular figures of the resistance in the Arab World.

The Pentagon's 'Terrorist Mastermind' was growing famous, and his typical black cap and T-shirts with "al Zarqawi = our Hero" sold better than ever. He became 'resistance fighter' #1. Speaking in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in July 2004, 'president' Bush via his speech writers once again made al Zarqawi's popularity soar when he suggested ''that the rigidly Islamic fundamentalist Al-Qaeda and Saddam's secular Ba'athist regime had an operational relationship.''

When asked about the president's remarks, White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan specifically referred to al Zarqawi as the link between the two, calling him a 'senior al-Qaeda' member in Iraq. Bush kept saying that the - after an alleged amputation one-legged al Zarqawi - 'gets instructions from al-Qaeda.' So al Zarqawi turned into the the 'Red Pimpernel' of the Arab resistance: the 'Ghost of the US War Opera' with terrorist groups and attacks on four continents.*

BUT: WHO WAS ABU MUSAB AL-ZARQAWI?

A month earlier - in June 2004 - a very well informed story appeared, written by Michel Chossudovsky for Global Research: "Al Zarqawi is often described as an "Osama associate", the bogeyman, allegedly responsible for numerous terrorist attacks in several countries. In other reports, often emanating from the same sources, it is stated that he has no links to Al Qaeda and operates quite independently. He is often presented as an individual who is challenging the leadership of bin Laden. His name crops up on numerous occasions in press reports and official statements. Since early 2004, al Zarqawi is in the news almost on a daily basis.

Osama belongs to the powerful bin Laden family, which historically had business ties to the Bushes and prominent members of the Texas oil establishment. Bin Laden was recruited by the CIA* during the Soviet-Afghan war and fought as a Mujahideen. In other words, there is a long-standing documented history of bin Laden-CIA and bin Laden-Bush family links, which are an obvious source of embarrassment to the US government.

In contrast to bin Laden, Al-Zarqawi has no family history. He comes from an impoverished Palestinian family in Jordan. His parents are dead. He emerges out of the blue. He is described by CNN as "a lone wolf" who is said to act quite independently of the Al Qaeda network. Yet surprisingly, this lone wolf is present in several countries, in Iraq, which is now his base, but also in Western Europe. He is also suspected of preparing  a terrorist attack on American soil.

CHIEF U.S. ENEMY: A MASTER OF DISGUISE

He seems to be in several places at the same time. He is described as "the chief U.S. enemy", "a master of disguise and bogus identification papers". We are led to believe that this "lone wolf"  manages to outwit the most astute US intelligence operatives. - [FPF: the CIA's 2006 annual budget alone, is more than $40 billion!].

According to 'The Weekly Standard' - which is known to have a close relationship to the Neocons in the Bush PNAC-administration: "Abu Musab al Zarqawi is hot right now. He masterminded not only Berg's murder but also the Madrid carnage on March 11, the bombardment of Shia worshippers in Iraq the same month, and the April 24 suicide attack on the port of Basra. But he is far from a newcomer to slaughter. Well before 9/11, he had already concocted a plot to kill Israeli and American tourists in Jordan. His label is on terrorist groups and attacks on four continents. Al-Zarqawi's profile is mounting a challenge to bin Laden's leadership of the global jihad.'' - (Weekly Standard, 24 May 2004).

IN IRAQ, HE IS SAID TO BE DETERMINED TO "IGNITE A CIVIL WAR BETWEEN SUNNIS AND SHIITES".

But is that not precisely what US intelligence is aiming at ("divide and rule") as confirmed by several analysts of the US led war? Pitting one group against the other with a view to weakening the resistance movement. The CIA, with its $30 (2006: $40+ billion) plus budget, pleads ignorance: they say they know nothing about him, they have a photograph, but, according to the Weekly Standard (24 May 2004), they apparently do not know his weight or height."

One can only - based on experience in the field - fully agree with Michel Chussodovsky: The US intelligence apparatus has created it own terrorist organizations. And at the same time, it creates its own terrorist warnings concerning the terrorist organizations which it has itself created. In turn, it has developed a cohesive multi-billion dollar counter-terrorism program "to go after" these terrorist organizations.

Counterterrorism and war propaganda  are intertwined. The propaganda apparatus feeds disinformation into the news chain. The terror warnings must appear to be "genuine". The objective is to present the terror groups as "enemies of America." The underlying objective is to galvanize public opinion in support of America's war agenda.

The "war on terrorism" requires a humanitarian mandate. The war on terrorism is presented as a "Just War", which is to be fought on moral grounds "to redress a wrong suffered." The Just War theory defines "good" and "evil." It concretely portrays and personifies the terrorist leaders as "evil individuals".

Several prominent American intellectuals and antiwar activists, who stand firmly opposed to the Bush administration, are nonetheless supporters of the Just War theory: "We are against war in all its forms but we support the campaign against international terrorism."

To reach its foreign policy objectives, the images of terrorism must remain vivid in the minds of the citizens, who are constantly reminded of the terrorist threat. The propaganda campaign presents the portraits of the leaders behind the terror network. In other words, at the level of what constitutes an  "advertising"  campaign, "it gives a face to terror."

The "war on terrorism" rests on the creation of one or more evil bogeymen, the terror leaders, Osama bin Laden, Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, et al, whose names and photos are presented ad nauseam in daily news reports. The bloody horror and peril shown in the 'Theatre du Grand Guignol' in France, no doubt also was supported by the publicity, the sensationalism surrounding "Jack the Ripper" - one of the 'bogeymen' of the last century.

There was an aura of mystery surrounding this individual al Zarqawi as part of the 'psy-op', the psychological operation propaganda ploy. Al Zarqawi was described as "so secretive even some operatives who work with him, do not know his identity." But in the Arab world people fired rounds of ammo in the air and lit candles for him, thinking that his example should be followed. For the US 'spooks' 'that did it'.

Probably his popularity, this mushrooming blowback, 'killed' the story of this 'Kleenex terrorist'. The other human beings murdered in the US 'Coalition of the Killing's illegal slaughter are hardly mentioned. As General Franks said: "we don't even count them'. The war propagandists refer to us - when we have been killed in their genocide - as 'collateral damage'.

'Kleenex terrorist' Al Zarqawi was used: Who's next?

The Bush administration and the killing of Zarqawi

09.06.2006 14:07

The Bush administration and the US media are going all out to portray the killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as a major victory for the American military and the recently installed government in Baghdad.

The attempt to parlay the death of the Islamist terrorist into a propaganda coup for the US and its proxy government in Baghdad is an obscene spectacle, combining cynicism and desperation.

Early Thursday morning, US time, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, flanked by Gen. George Casey, the top US commander in Iraq, and Zalmay Khalilzad, the American ambassador, held a press conference in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone to announce that the Jordanian-born terrorist had been killed, along with five other people, in a US air attack on a “safe house” outside of Baqubah, a town northeast of Baghdad.

Maliki boasted that Zarqawi had been “terminated.” A US military spokesman later acknowledged that among those killed by two 500-pound bombs dropped Wednesday evening were a woman and a child.

President Bush wasted no time in attempting to seize on the news to divert public attention from revelations of American massacres and, he hoped, staunch the sharp decline in his administration’s approval ratings, largely the product of broad and growing popular opposition in the US to the war.

In remarks made Thursday morning from the White House, Bush declared that “justice” had been “delivered” to the “operational commander of the terrorist movement in Iraq.” He praised the “courage and professionalism” of “the finest military in the world.”

He went on to caution against any expectations that the death and destruction in Iraq would recede, or that American troops would be coming home any time soon. “Zarqawi is dead,” he said, “but the difficult and necessary mission in Iraq continues. We can expect the terrorists and insurgents to carry on without him.” Warning of “tough days ahead,” he demanded the “continued patience of the American people.”

The Democrats quickly joined in hailing the killing of Zarqawi. Senator Joseph Biden, who has announced his intention to run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, told CNN that the killing was “good news.” He went on to praise the US military.

According to their own statements, US military and intelligence forces had been tracking Zarqawi for some time, having (presumably through torture) extracted from captured members of his group, Al Qaeda in Iraq, critical information about his movements. Why did they decide to move now? No doubt the timing of the attack was bound up with mounting signs of political crisis within the Bush administration and demoralization among US troops occupying Iraq.

Only a few days before, Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki was publicly denouncing the US military for a callous disregard for Iraqi life. Responding to the execution of 24 Iraqi civilians by US Marines in Haditha, Maliki called such atrocities a “daily phenomenon,” and charged that the American forces “do not respect the Iraqi people.... They crush them with their vehicles and kill them just on suspicion or a hunch.”

As for Zarqawi, he was one of those shadowy figures, well known to US intelligence, whose real allegiance at any given time is difficult to pin down. A fanatical Sunni Muslim fundamentalist, he represented an extremely reactionary element within Iraq. To the extent that he was involved in the numerous atrocities laid at his feet by Washington, his role was to undermine the Iraqi resistance and incite sectarian civil war between the Sunnis and Shiites.

Zarqawi began his career as a jihadist, like Osama bin Laden and so many others who subsequently turned against the US, by traveling to Afghanistan, in early 1989, to join the US-backed mujahidin guerilla war against the Soviet military occupation.

Even before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the Bush administration was vastly exaggerating Zarqawi’s role in the country in order to justify its illegal intervention. In his now notorious speech before the United Nations Security Council in February of 2003, then-Secretary of State Colin Powell singled out Zarqawi as the personification of an alliance between the Baathist regime of Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda—a claim which the Council on Foreign Relations in an article posted Thursday on its web site said, diplomatically avoiding the word “lie,” was “later disproved.”

As the Iraqi resistance grew in the aftermath of the invasion, the Bush administration, with the media and the Democratic Party trailing behind, sought to identify all armed opposition to the US occupiers with Zarqawi, in an effort to discredit as terrorists the Iraqis who were fighting to rid themselves of foreign invaders.

At the same time, actions attributed to Zarqawi at key points gave a boost to US interests. In February of 2004, amid signs that the Shiite population was on the verge of joining the armed resistance being fought mainly in Sunni areas, a public letter, allegedly authored by Zarqawi, called for Sunnis to provoke a civil war with the Shiites. Several weeks later, suicide bombings at Shiite mosques in Karbala and Baghdad were blamed on what the US called the “Zarqawi network.”

In May of 2004, shortly after the publication of gruesome photos of torture at Abu Ghraib, American businessman Nicholas Berg was kidnapped in Iraq and, according to the US, personally decapitated by Zarqawi. Berg had been held and questioned by the US military for 13 days before he was released and, shortly thereafter, kidnapped by those who subsequently killed him. The murky circumstances of this crime, and the role of American authorities, have never been explained.

When such atrocities failed either to stem the Iraqi resistance or halt the growth of antiwar sentiment within the US, and Washington grew desperate to install a government in Baghdad with some semblance of authority and stability, Zarqawi’s actions came increasingly to be seen as an obstacle to American requirements.

The Bush administration knows full well that Zarqawi never exercised the influence which it attributed to him. This is one reason for the cautionary remarks from Bush and other administration spokesmen about the impact of his elimination on the dire situation facing the US in Iraq.

The American web site Stratfor, which supports the US occupation and has close ties to elements within the US military and intelligence establishment, said in an article posted Thursday: “[M]ost estimates place the number of foreign jihadists operating in Iraq at between 800 and 1,000 at any given time—a mere fraction of the overall insurgency, which is estimated to be 15,000 to 20,000 strong.”

The article went on to note that Zarqawi’s organization had increasingly come into conflict with Iraqi nationalist groups within the resistance.

In one of the few discordant comments in a day-long barrage of media euphoria, reporter and author Nir Rosen put it this way in an interview on CNN: “The myth of Zarqawi was an American creation.” He went on to explain that the US had deliberately exaggerated Zarqawi’s role in order to discredit the Iraqi insurgency, and concluded that his absence would not improve the US position in Iraq.

There was another critical comment, remarkable for its bluntness and principled content. Michael Berg, whose son Nicholas allegedly died at Zarqawi’s hands, left the CNN anchor speechless when asked for his reaction to the news of the terrorist’s death. “There was no Al Qaeda in Iraq before Bush invaded,” he said. “I am not saying Saddam Hussein is a good man, but under him 30,000 Iraqis were dying every year, now 60,000 are dying.... Why is Iraq better off with Bush as king than with Saddam Hussein?”

CNN CUTS INFLAMMATORY INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL BERG RE ZARQAWI

By Blake Fleetwood - June 8, 2006

HUFFINGTON POST - This morning I watched CNN's Soledad O'Brien conduct an incredible interview with Michael Berg, the father of Nick Berg, who was beheaded by al-Zarqawi, but the most interesting and upsetting part of the interview was cut from further broadcasts on CNN later on in the day. They had Berg on many times, but they didn't have the following provocative thoughts. (see below).

CNN must have considered the words too inflammatory to put on the mainstream media. They balanced the coverage with predictable interviews with other relatives of Zarqawi victims:

BERG: Democracy? Come on. You can't really believe that that's a democracy there when the people who are running the elections are holding guns. That's not democracy.

SOLEDAD O'BRIEN: There is a theory that as they try to form some kind of government that, in fact, it's going to be brutal, it's going to be bloody, there's going to be loss and that's the history of many countries, that that's just a lot of people pay for what they believe will be better than what they had under Saddam Hussein.

BERG: Well, you know, I'm not saying Saddam Hussein was a good man, but he's no worse than George Bush. Saddam Hussein didn't pull the trigger, didn't commit the rapes. Neither did George Bush, but both men are responsible for them under their reigns of terror. I don't buy that.

Iraq did not have al Qaeda in it. Al Qaeda supposedly killed my son. Under Saddam Hussein, no al Qaeda. Under George Bush, al Qaeda. Under Saddam Hussein, relative stability. Under George Bush, instability. Under Saddam Hussein, about 30,000 deaths a year. Under George Bush, about 60,000 deaths a year.

I DON'T GET IT.

WHY IS IT BETTER TO HAVE GEORGE BUSH BE THE KING OF IRAQ RATHER THAN SADDAM HUSSEIN?

[endquote] - Censored CNN interview - Url.: www.globalresearch.ca/PrintArticle.php?articleId=2608

Blake Fleetwood: ''We will see if these words see the light of day when Berg is interviewed by Larry King later tonight.

10:45 PM EST. Thursday 6/8: ''Larry King did not press Berg on these earlier comments. Berg was very eloquent. A real pacifist. The amazing thing about what Berg said earlier is that 80% of the rest of the world agrees with him and thinks that Bush is worse than Saddam.

Saddam grew up in a culture of cruelty and mass murder. Bush came from a more civilized society, but comparing the number of innocent people killed, the results are about the same.''

CIA TERROR SHOW MUST GO ON: SUCCESSOR TO AL ZARQAWI READY

The PNAC #1 propaganda paper New York Times not only tells us that many new people in the Iraqi puppet government are former Saddam Hussein's generals etc. - they also proudly announce the successor of mythical al Zarqawi: ''Maj. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV, an aide to the top American commander here, Gen. George W. Casey Jr., told reporters at a briefing that United States commanders had identified the man most likely to take over as Al Qaeda's leader in Iraq, an Egyptian militant who uses the nom de guerre Abu al-Masri.

General Caldwell said Mr. Masri had been in Iraq since 2002, and had played a major role in organizing suicide bombings around Baghdad.'' - End quote - full item NYT war propaganda - Url.:  http://tinyurl.com/kjman

. . . . the electric-bogeyman creation of a prison term IS often the commencing of a "bogeyperson"s career, looking back across the recent events.
yes, i think he was steered from a distance . . . . it IS ALL TOO CONVENIENT, it does chime with the timing of the infowar too much - but that DOESNT mean its "official".
see " 2 remember the scams"
As to the comment picked up from Bergs father, yes - but. Or, yes - AND - in fact, that regime could have gotten changed WITHOUT a war - without creating more tyrants, tyranny + terrorists all over the world, THATS the fact we are all steered away from thinking about, but the sort of SHARP financial sanctions it'd take threaten the uncovering of shoddy criminal "worldcon-type" rackets, insider -dealers, "protection rackets" etc, even by asking for the smallest increases in socially responsible change in the economic structures - but instead, "dumb" sanctions are allowed to give ALL sanctions a bad name, starving people into supporting the local dictators instead of opposing them.
Its odd, perhaps, that when a lotv of embargoed iraqi oil gets into the U.S.A, when the profit goes to US oil companies . . . . we call it the U N scandal.
