Brize Norton Closed

bozavine | 12.08.2006 11:46 | Lebanon War 2006 | Anti-militarism

The Military air base at Brize Norton which the americans are using to support the Isreali attacks on lebannon has been closed

This morning a group of activists, from Pacifist Peace campaigners through to anarchists from Cardiff Anarchist Network, have closed down access to Brize Norton Military air base.

The action started about an hour ago, and at present there are huge tail backs with the police trying to get lorries and vehicles in and out of the camp, buit failing to do so. The police are currently considering whether to use their new powers under serious organised crime law to remove the protestors.

It appears the police were not expecting this action which is why it has been so succesful at closing the camp.

The action is in protest at the British and American support for the isreali military attacks in lebannon. The israeli government has deliberatley attacked civilian targets which contravenes international law. The British and American Government are also acting unlawfully by allow military equipement to be passed to isreal through Brize Norton, which is why the camp has been closed.

4 arrested at Brize Norton

12.08.2006 13:55

4 Cardiff activists have been arrested while blockading Brize Norton military base. The base was re-opened at about 14:30. It seems they are being held at Banbury Police Station, after being arrested for obstruction of the highway.

Look what else is happening at Brize norten this week

12.08.2006 15:47

08:30am 8th August 2006 At RAF Brize Norton today, a sad little ceremony is taking place. A cluster of families and senior officers will assemble to meet the aircraft bringing home from Afghanistan the bodies of three British soldiers killed there last week.

I think your action is great, it will improved if you note the above.

Reduced activity at the main entrance

12.08.2006 18:14

Without wanting to diminish the courageous actions of the anarchists who blockaded the road, I was there - and I believe that although the base did close the main entrance to traffic because of the demo - they were quietly sending the soldiers arriving at the main entrance to another entrance after an hour or so.

Anybody know which are the other entrances?

However, there was also a great Samba band playing for peace at the pedestrian and cyclist entrance to the base. Could do with basic maps of how to get to each entrance... seems a bit of a shame there were two demos one in Brize Norton, the other in Oxford city, at the same time.

Do we need to make sure Swindon and Oxford CND exchange phone numbers before the next demo?

Let's hope this makes the some people on the base think twice about what their careers involve (war not defense).

I noted 3 aircraft on the tarmac outside hangars about 1 mile from the main entrance, two white ones and a dark gray one, no idea about what they were for - but the white ones were probably RAF given markings (red/blue circle?).

Fingers' crossed the lads and lasses of the C.A.N. get released without charge a.s.a.p.

Wrong, the rear entrance was blocked too, traffic redirected there was turned away.

It's also worth noting that Matthew Cornish's (one of those soldiers) mother is a tireless campaigner against the USUK's wars of aggression. See:
