IDF soldier killed, three others hurt, in South Lebanon

Nir Hasson | 23.08.2006 16:37 | Lebanon War 2006 | Anti-militarism

An Israel Defense Forces soldier was killed and three others were wounded Wednesday when a mine exploded in southern Lebanon, close to the border with Israel. One of the wounded soldiers, a company commander, was in moderate-to-serious condition; a battalion commander sustained moderate wounds and another solider was lightly injured. The incident apparently occurred when the tank in which the three were traveling ran over an old IDF mine, planted before the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000.

According to an initial investigation, the Givati brigade troops force arrived in the area following a navigational mistake following an ambush.

An armored vehicle evacuated the wounded from the area. They were then transported to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.

Also Wednesday, three Lebanese soldiers were killed as they tried to clear unexploded IDF shells in southern Lebanon, a senior Lebanese security official said.

They were the first deaths suffered by the Lebanese army since it began deploying in the south on August 17, the official said.

Meaningless loss of life

23.08.2006 23:52

I was thinking it was ironic that IDF were killed by their own bombs, but that's not a nice thought and not only have people been killed, from both sides, but the families will be suffering badly. As is often the case, the soldiers families are young, and it is a terrible thing for someone to get that knock on the door or a phone call to say their son is dead or husband or brother.

Whether IDF or Hizbollah or Lebanese, you have to hope that one day they will see each other as equals.

To support one side or the other for victory, is tantamount to supporting a never ending cycle of violence.

Try not to gloat at the deaths of the fighters, for the IDF who fought on the ground were brave men, who followed that sad path that opens up when fools at the top of society cannot bring themselves to speak to each other. For both sides, in their minds, there were legitimate reasons for fighting. As an Englishman I honour the fallen of both sides and pray we do not see more. The men who fought together, could talk together. Their children could play together, and by God we need someone of Mr Kings calibre, some orator of distinction to stress the point that Arab and Jewish kids might one day play together.

Not really the usual one sided comment, but there we go.

Peace, Shalom and Salem.

As long as they occupy and shoot

I will not mourn one death of an Israeli/US/Ukor any other soldier. Let them stop their brutal tactics and the occupation of foreign lands then wel talk again.

Occupation

If we're talking about "occupation of foreign lands", then what is Hezbollah doing in Lebanon and why did they mount a cross-border raid and fire rockets at another sovereign state?
