Music of movement to manifest the moment

ira sol | 11.10.2006 14:02 | Culture | London

Recently, there has emerged a new social movement which intends to shine some light on the state of the music industry. It examines copyright, publishing rights and exposes those who control such commodities in a society which has become dominated by financial gain. This group of people proclaim the inevitable arrival of a sound which defies the current trend of the pillage of social consciousness in music and concentrates on the origins of music as a unique form of communication, from regions across the globe. Their aim is to expand and elevate social consciousness; describe the terms and conditions of extreme wealth/poverty, highlight all of the injustices which seek to perpetuate this and eventually put an end to it. The acetate republic claim no leadership and the only criteria for membership is that its members 'use' music as opposed to 'abusing' it. The republicans have also caused a stir by adopting a controversial 'copyleft' law -juxtaposing the infamous 'copryright'-, allowing other artists to use original material in live performance without gaining permission.

There was a time when music brought people together, not only to dance, celebrate, reflect or mourn, but under the umbrella of a cause. It still does, but not for the masses, who have become sedated under the influence of the industrial deformation and globalisation of music. Music spoke out against injustices and those who condoned them. We have seen a potentially revolutionary industry of variety and expression, eaten and almost thoroughly corrupted and perverted into a confused conveyor-belt of monotonous propaganda, captivity and stereotypes, all in the interests of the chairmen and executive heads. Not only the people but our children are being hypnotised by the collaboration of multi-national corporations, who are using and attempting to govern music, as a simple accompaniment to capitalist ideals. Their containment of expression and sanitisation of integrity is purposeful.; it has an agenda. Music has slowly been driven into obscurity, replaced with image, consumerism and ignorance; all of this in the name of control, money and power. And so we ask; What Remains for the people and their future without the power of music?
We are led by nobody. You are the leader, I am the leader, they are the leaders, we are the leaders; and we are all led by the eternally spinning acetate; the matriarchal music in our spirit, the patriarchal ritual of rhythm in our beating hearts and the natural infusion of the two. We await the day when publishers are our people and will press acetate for the benefit of the people and not for financial/capital gain. We are acetate republicans, in a world where corporate industry/culture, advertising and money have suffocated artists and smothered their art; rendering the turntable empty. The people are being duped into believing that music and image go hand in hand. We will not categorise our priorities to the people, for they will never stand indivisible, we believe in the strength, opinion and moral courage of every individual. This is not a manifesto, it is a democratic space for all, so sing your song.

Harmony can be achieved together with diversity. Peace is a varying state. Fame stands for nothing in the Republic; celebrity is insignificant. Capitalising on Capitalism has been designed to calm the restless conscience of the extortionist and kill our own spirit. Do not buy into it. We will allow each individual the freedom to listen, digest and participate. No man, woman or child should undertake what they do not want to for the profit of the man and the harm of the state. The power of music has been undermined by capitalist thinking and zombieism. Our people are socially unaware. Unreserved status and attention is being given to trivial politics in desperate days, which further advances the capital of The Man who relentlessly continues to numb the ears and ideas of the masses in our times. We are further being divided and categorised by an oligarchy of hugely wealthy companies, which assimilate independence and sell it to you at the lowest bid. The lucky puppets are carefully selected to maintain these proponents of ideology and not feeling. 'record deals' stage a dangerous acquisition cult of 'the younger the better'. The fat cats then buy out and feed the conformist talent which they then manipulate, milk and abandon under corrupt contractual agreements.
You can see clearly.... you can see the truth, but your eyes and ears should not relate equally under the influence of everything on our radio waves and television screens. You are told the truth stands for nothing, that opinions, spirit and even justice; can be bought. Why not question what you hear? and how it realtes to what you see, or how you see? What don't you see? How is it hidden, where is it hidden? why is it hidden? will you never have to face it? at what price do we remain ignorant in our time? what will your son or daughter face, with the legacy we leave behind? Soon, eye and ear will not be able to function independently from one another.
We will expose, how people are being conned. The industry is in a race with our consciences, the incomes of the various presidents and CEOs depend on the destruction of the peoples spirit, the obliteration of their natural musicality. How far down can the industry push the accelerator in order to get from Here to There, with total disregard for what the people must bare to hear? The fate of our children against such powerful, subliminal and relentless advertising and corporate collaboration, will not leave us much time to deplore and condemn their actions. The term 'Popular music' is not a plausible excuse for injecting people with such a dangerous epidemic.
The industry has placed its music in a comfortable chair at the centre of a whirlwind of ignorance and capitalist takeover. The majority will continue to kill each other for the sake of an image in the name of these ideals; in the name of our music.
The Republic will not be trivialised. We must pick up our instruments now!
The Republic will not be trivialised. Acetate feeds the republic and the revolution will become of it.
