CPP warns against use of Philippines as staging ground for US war against DPRK

Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) | 18.10.2006 10:49 | Anti-militarism | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | London

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today denounced the current large-scale military exercises being conducted jointly in various areas in Luzon and Palawan by US and Philippine as a "continuing transgession against Philippine independence and sovereignty." At the same time, the CPP warned against use of Philippine territory as a staging ground or support base for any possibility of US military aggression against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Up to 5,700 US troopers from the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Unit based in Okinawa, Japan and from the Essex Expeditionary Strike Group based in Sasebo, Jaban arrived in Luzon and Palawan to conduct joint drills with 1,300 Filipino soldiers up to October 31.

CPP spokesperson Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal noted that more and more US troops are being deployed in joint exercises being conducted in the Philippines "purportedly to counter terrorism, but actually as part of the conditioning to increase the scale of the continuing US military intervention in the Philippines itself as well as in other countries."

Rosal said that the joint US-Philippine military exercises are being used by the US as cover for its increasing military intervention in the Philippines, including direct participation in the Philippine military's combat and intelligence operations in Mindanao and, more and more, the development of its own intelligence network, database build-up and direct familiarity in areas of conflict in the country, especially in the strongholds of the New People's Army.

Rosal also said the joint military exercises and the increasing presence of US troops in the country is also setting the stage for any possible use of Philippine territory as launching pad for wars of aggresion against other countries, especially those in the Asia-Pacific region opposed to US hyperpower hegemony. The US used the Philippines as one of its launching pads for its invasion of Iraq in 1989-1990 and again since March 2003.

Rosal urged the Filipino people to vigilantly oppose any step by the US government to use the Philippines as a possible launching pad or support base for a possible war against North Korea, even as he also said that the US is only barking frenziedly to hide its real fear of actually going to war against the DPRK which has just demonstrated its self-defense capability.

"All Filipino patriots and the entire Filipino nation should not allow the Philippines to be used as a pawn and staging ground for US' hegemonic wars of aggression against countries and peoples fighting to defend their independence and freedoms," Rosal said.

CPP congratulates DPRK for nuke breakthrough

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today congratulated the people and government of the Democratic People's Republic for successfully and safely carrying out its first-ever nuclear test and hailed the successful test as a “militant assertion of national sovereignty and the right of an independent country to develop its own powerful self-reliant defense capability amidst constant efforts by the US to impose its imperialist hegemony over the world, maintain its monopoly of nuclear weapons along with a few other powerful countries, and subvert the sovereign will of the DPRK.”

Yesterday, the DPRK government announced that it has successfully carried out an underground test of its nuclear weapons, developed after four decades of painstaking self-reliant efforts, “with 100% of sheer indigenous wisdom and technology… under secure conditions… at a stirring time when all the people of the country are making a great leap forward in the building of a great, prosperous, powerful socialist nation.” There were no reports of radiation leak from the test site. The announcement was met expectedly, however, with condemnation by the US government which called the test a “provocative act threatening international peace and stability.”

“The Filipino people and their revolutionary movement regard the DPRK nuclear test as a significant positive development in the effort of freedom-loving peoples the world over to challenge the US imposition of Pax Americana over the world, break the US and other big imperialist powers’ monopoly over nuclear weapons, and compel the world’s peoples to kneel before its hegemonic power,” said CPP spokesperson Gregorio “Ka Roger” Rosal.

“Now, in the face of the DPRK's advance in scientific and technical knowhow with nuclear power, the US is significantly deterred from threatening and carrying out military strikes against the DPRK. The US is afraid that it can no longer try to bully the DPRK,” said Rosal. With the success of its first-ever nuclear weapons test, North Korea becomes the ninth country in the world to have nuclear weapons, along with the United States, Russia, France, China, Britain, India, Pakistan and Israel.

“Of course, US imperialism and other imperialist powers and their client states will condemn the DPRK’s nuclear breakthrough which broke their monopoly of nuclear weapons and confronts the imperialist-imposed pacifism that oppress and cause great hardships on the countries and peoples of the world,” said Rosal.

The CPP also regard the development of the DPRK's nuclear capability as an important breakthrough in fulfilling its energy requirements and further boosting its economic potential, aside from developing its capability to defend its national sovereignty.

“Contrary to imperialist propaganda, the strengthening of the nuclear capability of the DPRK does not pose a threat to other nations' sovereignty and to genuine world peace. In the past, the DPRK has shown respect for the independence of other countries in the same way that it wants the US to respect the sovereign will of the DPRK. The development of nuclear capability in the hands of independent countries that persist in the fight against US hegemonism and aggression realistically deters the US from using its nuclear weapons and military might to attack these countries, and is thus a positive factor in our common striving for genuine peace in the world,” added Rosal.

ALLIANCE FOR A JUST AND LASTING PEACE IN THE PHILIPPINES (AJLPP) – U.S.A.

PRESS STATEMENT

AJLPP-USA Condemns Arroyo’s Brazen Puppetry to US Imperialism and Attacks against People’s Korea (DPRK)

The running dog always follows the master. But the dog’s bark is more ferocious than its nervous bite.

In a knee-jerk reaction, the shameless US puppet and Philippine president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo condemned the successful nuclear test by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) as “dangerous” and a threat to world peace and pointed out that it is danger to the country “because the Philippines is in the range of the nuclear attack” from the DPRK.

Before Arroyo throws tantrums and barks at the wrong tree, she should uphold the sovereignty of our nation. She has reason to be nervous since more than 5,000 US troops will be conducting “war exercises” in the Philippines starting October 11 in Luzon and Mindanao.

Arroyo should rightly be wary when she has opened the Philippines as a big war games area for US troops and the entire US naval fleet which carries nuclear weapons pointed directly at potential US enemies like the DPRK, China and Russia and other “terrorist groups.”

Arroyo should remember that neither the DPRK nor the People’s Republic of China has posed any threat to the Philippines. On the other hand, it was the puppet government of the Philippines sheepishly following the lead of the US which sent its mercenary troops composed of several combat teams to Korea, the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea (PEFTOK), to aid United States aggression in the name of the United Nations (UN). The Philippines was one of the nations that intervened in the Korean peninsula on the side of the US during the 1950-53 war. That war, however, eventually saw the defeat of US armed forces and it ended with a truce in 1953 along the 38th parallel.

More than that, Arroyo wants to change the present Philippine constitution to open up the Philippines to even greater US military intervention and economic plunder. By scrapping the anti-nuclear and anti-bases provisions as well as the provision disallowing foreign troops from being stationed in the country, she wants to discard any remaining vestige of sovereignty of the people and the nation. Worst of all, Arroyo wants to open up the country’s natural resources to unimpeded and unfathomable plunder by US and other foreign corporations in exchange for millions in bribes and kickbacks.

Why must we be fear a hypothetical nuclear attack when Arroyo and her regime have already devastated the country more than any nuclear attack from DPRK can achieve? The plunderous and rapacious looting of her regime, not to mention the unbridled war of terror against all dissenters, have already caused untold misery and suffering for the masses. The recent natural calamity typhoon Milenyo has shown us just how inept and useless the graft-ridden and corrupt US-Arroyo regime is in responding to our people’s miseries.

Pundits and blind defenders of imperial America have it all wrong: the DPRK is simply trying to defend itself from the bellicose saber-rattling that the US imperialists have directed at them and other countries and nations asserting their national sovereignty and refusing to submit to US dictates. We should not be afraid of anti-imperialist countries like the DPRK. Rather, we should link arms with all peoples, nations and countries opposed to the world’s common enemy – US imperialism.

Our people will never find peace and security beneath the jackboot of US imperialism and its trusted puppets like Arroyo. For the AJLPP, Filipinos can never rely on anybody but themselves to throw off foreign domination, feudal bondage and the corrupt, graft-ridden government – the real obstacles that stand in the way of achieving peace and prosperity for our people.

The AJLPP will always support the Filipino people’s just struggle towards a just and lasting peace in the country and all over the world. #

National Democratic Front of the Philippines
February 16, 2006

On behalf of the 17 revolutionary allied organizations of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) and the Filipino people, the NDFP extends its warmest comradely greetings to Comrade Kim Jong Il, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and Chairman of the National Defense Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on the occasion of his birth anniversary on 16th February.

Born amid the flames of the struggle against the Japanese war of aggression and occupation, Comrade Kim Jong Il grew in an environment of intense struggle against imperialism and during the great undertaking of constructing socialism in his beloved Korea. Armed with the correct ideological and political principles, he has helped develop and strengthen the Workers’ Party of Korea and the Korean People's Army into a force that is ever-ready and capable to defeat any enemy that would attack and invade Korea and seek to reverse the victories of the Korean people.

Comrade Kim Jong Il’s trust in the Korean people has forged unity among the Party, the People’s Army and the Korean people. This unity continues to be an invincible force in facing the imperialist enemy and overcoming the effects of natural disasters.

Amidst the onslaught of political, economic and military attacks and threats of US imperialism, the Korean people, under the leadership of Comrade Kim Jong Il, have time and again defended Korea’s independence and national sovereignty. Not only have they determinedly countered these attacks and threats, they have defended the gains that the people and the Party won in their struggle against imperialism and reaction.

The struggle of the Korean people, like the struggle of the Filipino people, against imperialism is part of an ever-growing and intensifying international fight against imperialism and reaction. With every victory of the people, the enemy is weakened and international solidarity is forged and strengthened.

We join Comrade Kim Jong Il and the Korean people in their fervent aspiration for the peaceful reunification of their country under the banner of independence, peace and national unity.

Long live Comrade Kim Jong Il!
Long live the Korean people!
Long live international solidarity!
