This looks like it is going to be a great event, so I do earge anyone interested to come along and to tell their friends about it.

Just a quick addition to say that Hands Off Venezuela are currently setting up a society within the University of London (aiming to cover all colleges including SOAS, LSE, UCL, etc.). This will be a great first event and good opportunity for interested students to meet each other. Anyone who would like to find out more about the new student group, and perhaps even like to help out, can speak to Sam at the event, or email:  hovstudent@hotmail.co.uk

Look forward to seeing lots of you there!

In Venezuela there's a democratic revolution happening at this very moment.

A progressive government has been elected that's keeping its word and giving power to the people.

Students especially have been empowered, with new universities built and "autonomous" rights enshrined in law. Thousands of students from poor backgrounds, who had previously been totally excluded, are now in higher education.

The US government and the local elite have continuously tried to sabotage this peaceful process - with coups, fake strikes, a propaganda war and many other dirty tricks.

On December 3rd, Venezuelans will again go to the polls. Although President Chávez, who is more popular than ever due to the success of many new social programmes, is certain to win, his enemies are likely to use this opportunity to cause chaos and attack the democratic will of the people yet again.

At stake is the largest oil supply in the world. Bush has made it his top priority to oust Chávez by the time he leaves office. You can help stop him.

This Monday October 23rd from 6.30pm in the JCR at the School of Oriental and African Studies (Thornhaugh St entrance, nearest tube Russell Square) watch:

"Today Venezuela - Tomorrow the World!" (2006)

and hear from:

Ronny Pante (general coordinator of the Integrated Students' Movement, Venezuela)

who is touring British universities to explain why students and activists in this country should care about what's happening in Venezuela.

There will be a questions and answers session afterwards and a chance to find out more about the international observer delegations going to Venezuela for the December election.

A Hands Off Venezuela student society is currently being set up within the University of London. For more info, please speak to Sam at the meeting or email  london@handsoffvenezuela.org

The London branch of Hands Off Venezuela meets every Wednesday from 7pm at the National Union of Journalists headquarters, 308 Grays Inn Rd, Kings Cross. Everyone is welcome, please email the address above or see the website for more info.

This meeting is sponsored by the SOAS Latin American Society and Hands Off Venezuela.
