Skerton West by-election result - BNP percentage drops to 11%

Lancaster UAF | 15.12.2006 01:02 | Anti-racism | Culture | Social Struggles

BNP vote going, going...almost gone...

Despite the high winds, far from tropical temperatures and torrential rain, a demo took place outside the count for the second Skerton West by-election in six months - this one unnecessarily called by the British National Party candidate, Chris Hill, who no doubt expected to build on what little support he got last time, but was still firmly trounced into third place despite a dreadfully low turnout and the presence of an Independent candidate. The results are below:

Total votes cast 834
Turnout 17.5%

James Airey (Conservative) 172
Norman Gardner (Independent) 76
Chris Hill (BNP) 93
Karen Leytham (Labour) 493 (Elected)

Hill's lacklustre performance is partly a direct result of his campaigning, which was pretty weak by any standards. He appeared to have little or no support on the ground, couldn't be bothered to attend when the postal votes were sorted and appeared to attend the count alone. That, and the fact that his leaflet seemed more about attacking us than stating policies, doubtless contributed to his percentage of the vote dropping from 16% to 11%.

Still, whatever the reason, that's what we like to see - a healthily diminishing BNP vote. Exactly right for a city that has long enjoyed its multiculturalism and has no welcome for those who wish to divide our community.

No doubt some of his vote disappeared in annoyance at the cost of this additional by-election - a complete waste of a few thousand quid in our opinion (we'd love to know exactly how much so we can use it on our next anti-BNP leaflet). The other two councillors in the ward would have been perfectly competent to pick up the slack for the final six months of the council cycle following the death of Labour's Jean Jones, and should have been allowed to, thus saving council tax payers the cost and inconvenience caused by Hill and his pseudo-political party.

And what a party! Here in Lancaster we have Chris Hill frivolously wasting thousands and over at Calderdale there's Richard Mulhall thieving thousands. It's no wonder the BNP is generally regarded as a bad joke.

Anyway, enough of the riff-raff. Our congratulations to the winner and many thanks from Lancaster UAF to everybody who leafletted, demonstrated or participated in any way in this campaign against the fascist BNP. You did great and we hope you dry out soon.

Plus Grange Hill

15.12.2006 01:52

An additional item of news has just come in. The BNP were also beaten into third place at Grange Hill (Epping). With that and the Skerton West defeat they have not won a single by-election since Goresbrook in September 2004 and that was for only eight months. In that time, the BNP have stood in around fifty by-elections.

Skerton West by-election result - BNP percentage drops

15.12.2006 03:53

There appears to be some doubt about who exactly called the Skerton West by-election, so we've amended the post to reflect this because, unlike the BNP, we don't like lying to or misleading people. If the Indymedia moderators are able to replace the original post with this one, we'd appreciate it. If not, please forget you read the original post and read the one below instead...

Skerton West by-election result - BNP percentage drops

Despite the high winds, far from tropical temperatures and torrential rain, a demo took place outside the count for the second Skerton West by-election in six months - this one unnecessarily 'fought' by the British National Party candidate Chris Hill, who no doubt expected to build on what little support he got last time, but was still firmly trounced into third place despite a dreadfully low turnout and the presence of an Independent candidate. The results are below:

Total votes cast 834

At least we didn't have to tolerate Hill polluting our city with the likes of Paul Cromie and former Combat 18 member, Andrew Marsden, like he did at the last Skerton West by-election  http://82.69.12.18/lancasteruafblog/index.php?itemid=311 . What a party! Here in Lancaster we have Chris Hill pretty humiliatingly losing, at Grange Hill (Epping) there's the BNP's Jacqueline Carne doing much the same thing, while over at Calderdale there's the BNP's Richard Mulhall thieving thousands from the council tax payers who put him in as councillor in the first place. It's no wonder the BNP is generally regarded as a bad joke.

With Grange Hill and the Skerton West defeats the party hasn't won a single by-election since Goresbrook in September 2004 and that was for only eight months. In that time, the BNP have stood in approximately fifty by-elections.

Vote UKIP??????

15.12.2006 14:53

What a prat.
UKIP are nothing more than a sad old bunch of closet BNP wanabes. At least the BNP openly state that they are racial and act in a fascist manor for us to see and condemn.
UKIP are little more than a sad joke and should be treated accordingly by all.

Plus don't forget they've already got a bunch of useless tossers in Europe that haven't lifted a single finger for anyone; left, right or otherwise. The only thing that they have ensured is that they get paid their huge expenses and yearly salary. Fucking hypocrites !

BNP Councillor escapes jail

15.12.2006 16:48

Calderdale BNP Councillor Richard Mulhall escaped jail yesterday and got 200 hours community service, for swindling thousands in council tax benefit and dole. The judge said that had new laws been in place at the time he would have got a suspended jail term.

Rather than hold his hand up and admit the offences, Mulhall pleaded not guilty and tried to confuse the jury by mixing up his councillor expenses with fraudulent claims.

So now we know

19.12.2006 05:20

What's with the "Congratulations to the winner"?

The UAF, an SWP front, congratulating the party of the 'bosses' on their election victory.

No fucking wonder the working class are turning to the BNP for solutions!!!!!!

Deadbeat

Nitwit!!!

21.12.2006 17:26

The BNP vote was falling NOT rising, you NITWIT!!!

This is hardly a measure of people turning to the neo-Nazis in their droves.

Get a fucking life, Hitler worshippers!

Linda Lovelace

Eh!

23.12.2006 21:29

Read the original article carefully, Sweetheart.

The SWP congratulated the winning Conservative candidate (the party of the 'bosses' - keep up, love) on their election success.

THAT is why I said the working class are pissed off to the tits with the Left.

Deadbeat
