An additional item of news has just come in. The BNP were also beaten into third place at Grange Hill (Epping). With that and the Skerton West defeat they have not won a single by-election since Goresbrook in September 2004 and that was for only eight months. In that time, the BNP have stood in around fifty by-elections.

There appears to be some doubt about who exactly called the Skerton West by-election, so we've amended the post to reflect this because, unlike the BNP, we don't like lying to or misleading people. Skerton West by-election result - BNP percentage drops

Despite the high winds, far from tropical temperatures and torrential rain, a demo took place outside the count for the second Skerton West by-election in six months - this one unnecessarily 'fought' by the British National Party candidate Chris Hill, who no doubt expected to build on what little support he got last time, but was still firmly trounced into third place despite a dreadfully low turnout and the presence of an Independent candidate. The results are below:

Karen Leytham (Labour) 493 (Elected)

Hill's lacklustre performance is a direct result of his campaign, which was pretty weak by any standards. He appeared to have little or no support on the ground, couldn't be bothered to attend when the postal votes were sorted and appeared to attend the count alone. That, and the fact that his leaflet seemed more about attacking us than stating policies, doubtless contributed to his percentage of the vote dropping from 16% to 11%.

Still, that's what we like to see - a healthily diminishing BNP vote. Exactly right for a city that has long enjoyed its multiculturalism and has no welcome for those who wish to divide our community.

At least we didn't have to tolerate Hill polluting our city with the likes of Paul Cromie and former Combat 18 member, Andrew Marsden, like he did at the last Skerton West by-election  http://82.69.12.18/lancasteruafblog/index.php?itemid=311 . What a party! Here in Lancaster we have Chris Hill pretty humiliatingly losing, at Grange Hill (Epping) there's the BNP's Jacqueline Carne doing much the same thing, while over at Calderdale there's the BNP's Richard Mulhall thieving thousands from the council tax payers who put him in as councillor in the first place. It's no wonder the BNP is generally regarded as a bad joke.

Calderdale BNP Councillor Richard Mulhall escaped jail yesterday and got 200 hours community service, for swindling thousands in council tax benefit and dole. The judge said that had new laws been in place at the time he would have got a suspended jail term.

Rather than hold his hand up and admit the offences, Mulhall pleaded not guilty and tried to confuse the jury by mixing up his councillor expenses with fraudulent claims.
