Lydd Airport bossses have today lodged a planning application to Shepway District Council for expansion.
Both group in the area are gearing up to respond to this and fight it all the way during next year. SDC are likely to put the plans out for wide consultation during first half of 2007.

Nb: Lydd Airport-No expansion group ( Shepway Freinds of the Earth, Green Party and Lib Dems allied to second anti-group) will also be responding to these plans ,though through the planning process in the main. see website.

LAAG Opposes Lydd Airport Planning

Application



Lydd Airport Action Group (LAAG) vigorously opposes Lydd Airport’s

planning application for a new terminal and a 444m runway

extension and believes that the Environmental Impact Assessment

(EIA) which accompanies the planning application is incomplete and

inadequate.



The airport plans to grow passenger numbers from 3000 in 2005 to

2million passengers per annum (mppa) by 2011/2014 and 6mppa by

2021.The runway extension will allow the airport to achieve this

ambition by enabling large commercial jets such as the Boeing 737

and Airbus A320 to operate from the airport. Lydd Airport is not a

suitable site for the creation of a regional airport, being surrounded

by fragile habitats protected under European and UK laws, located

less than 3 miles from the Dungeness Nuclear Complex and less than

2 and 8 miles respectively from the Lydd and Hythe Military ranges.



We think the proposal will lead to the destruction of Romney Marsh

in exchange for the creation of a small number of mainly low skilled

jobs. We believe there are serious public safety issues as large commercial

aircraft will be taking off and landing beside nuclear power stations.

The nuclear safety consultant John Large has determined that the risk

of crash damage exceeds the government’s minimum acceptable risk

threshold by a factor of 20.



Residents will be affected by noise and air pollution over a wide

area. The Instrument Landing System (ILS) flight approach path

starts over Lyminge and passes over the coastal towns at around the

following heights: Dymchurch 1600ft, St Mary’s Bay 1200ft, Littlestone

600ft and Dunes Road Greatstone 400ft. There will be no ILS for aircraft



landing from the South West due to restricted airspace over the

Lydd Military Ranges (4000ft) and the Dungeness Nuclear Power

Stations (2000ft). All commercial aircraft taking off from runway 21

(towards Lydd) would be required to make a sharp right hand turn to

avoid the Lydd Ranges and would pass over Lydd before beginning their

on-ward routings.



The preferred routes after take off from either runway 21 (towards

Lydd -westerly winds) or runway 03 (towards Greatstone - easterly

winds) will be - flights to France & Italy going directly over Camber,

Spain & Portugal over Rye, Germany, Netherlands & Scandinavia over

Hythe & Folkestone, and flights to Scotland and Ireland over Romney

Marsh towards Maidstone (Detling).



LAAG BELIEVES THE LARGE SCALE EXPANSION OF LYDD AIRPORT SHOULD BE ABANDONED.

Plane Stupid

Hold on! On the one hand you greeny tree huggers are saying we should not have runway five at heathrow and that it would be better to expand smaller region airports and then a bunch of nimby middle class commuter belters are complaining about their little airfield being bought up to scratch!! Cant have it both ways you know.

It makes sence environmentally to expand all air ports so people don't have to drive so far to catch a plane.

Expanding airports capacity will inevitably lead to increasing flying and thus more car journeys to and from airports (80% currently do) THus more air flights which will cancel out any putting in of light bulbs, solar panels etc over the next 10-20 yars.

Take into account such as the extra infrastrcuture needs of more road capacity (Romney marsh has only narrow A250 and B 2070-the former has a dodgy accident rate esp on RM) and those at the other end (also low-paid jobs) and it's more damage to the climate.

Lydd Airport currently has a Primary School right next to the landing point ! and take offs are directly towards Dungeness A and B Nuclear Power stations - just 1.5 miles away !!

We have to stop flying and driving or else the climate will overwhem us sooner than most think (90% cut in C02 by 2030 starting yesterday basically...)

LONDON ASHFORD AIRPORT SUBMITS PLANNING APPLICATIONS FOR NEW
TERMINAL BUILDING AND RUNWAY EXTENSION

London Ashford Airport today (Friday 15 December) submitted two planning applications to Shepway District Council as part of its phased multi-million pound redevelopment programme for the site at Lydd in Kent.

The applications are for a new terminal building capable of handling up to 500,000 passengers a year and also a proposed extension to the existing airport runway.

The airport is licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority for general aviation, passenger flights and freight transport, and its existing terminal building can support up to 300,000 passengers per annum. The proposed runway extension will allow planes to operate at Lydd with full payloads, thus enabling the airport to offer a greater range of more distant destinations to passengers.

LAA proposes to increase the length of the existing runway by just under 20%, from 1,505m to 1,799m, adding a new starter extension at its northern end. The cost of the runway extension is put at ?2m and it is expected to take around four months to construct.

Airport managing director Zaher Deir said the runway extension would not affect the type of aircraft or numbers of passengers would pass through the airport, but would allow any aircraft flying out of Lydd to carry greater fuel loads thus permitting a greater range of destinations to be serviced than at present. "The increase in runway length will also have an added benefit of allowing the same number of passengers to be carried as previously with a smaller number of aircraft movements.

"As part of our overall redevelopment proposals for Lydd, separate applications are also being submitted for the construction of a new two-phase terminal building. The first phase would allow for up to 500,000 passengers a year, and the second would increase this capability to allow two million passengers to pass through the airport each year," added Mr Deir.


The proposed new terminal building is subject to two separate planning applications, each covering the two phases of building development.

Phase one is a detailed planning application for a new terminal building of two linked rectangular structures with shallow curved roofs and floorspace of 81,860sq ft (7,605sqm) to accommodate 500,000 passengers a year. The construction period for phase one of the terminal is scheduled to last around 18 months from 2009, becoming operational in 2010.

A huge number of jobs will be created if the applications are approved. The runway extension will provide four full-time equivalent construction jobs, with an additional 180 direct jobs created when the extension is operational and the airport is accommodating 300,000 passengers a year.

In addition, it's estimated that phase one of the terminal building will create 28 full-time equivalent construction jobs and once operational 300 direct jobs. Phase two will support 15 full-time equivalent construction jobs and during operation some 1,200 direct jobs - making a total of 43 construction and 1,500 direct jobs created as a result of phases one and two.

Zaher Deir said: "These employment vacancies should be taken up by the local labour market on Romney Marsh and the surrounding districts and this will do much to help regenerate the regional economy and breathe new life into local communities.

"The development of Lydd airport should also promote inward investment and benefit local companies through the option of flying from LAA to a wider choice of locations than at present. A thriving airport is also expected to influence new businesses in their choice of location due to improved services offered by the airport," he added.

The applications are supported by a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment. The EIA covers a wide range of issues including land use, ground conditions, water resources, terrestrial and aquatic ecology, bird conservation and hazard management, landscape and visual amenity, traffic and transport, air quality, noise and vibration and socio-economic issues.

Shepway District Council will be advertising details of the planning applications in the local press and on its website (www.shepway.gov.uk) - copies of Lydd's applications will be made available for the public to study.
