STOP Coca-Cola’s Continuing Dirty War

Thursday 21 December 2006: A letter was delivered to the Colombian Embassy expressing international concern at Student and Trade Union leaders yet again being targeted by death squads, this time the Aguilas Negras (Black Eagles), for daring to criticise Coca Cola, Nestlé and other private corporations.

Barranquilla, Colombia, 14 December: A communiqué was left at the residence of Euripides Yance, a Coca-Cola worker and member of the National Committee of “Sinaltrainal”.

The communiqué, entitled “Black Eagles” (Aguilas Negras), threatened various student, social and trade union leaders with execution, giving them a week to leave the city. Amongst them are members and leaders of Sinaltrainal and workers at Coca-Cola Euripides Yance, Limberto Carranza, and Campo Quintero.

The death threats occurred just days after Colombia’s Vice-President Francisco “Pinocchio” Santos made a public declaration referring to what he called campaigns to discredit Coca Cola, Nestlé and other private corporations, and contended that they were pushed by “sectors of the extreme left, radicals infiltrated into trade union sectors that are generating absolutely absurd campaigns against the corporations”.

These threats occurred at the time as demands were being negotiated with the Coca-Cola bottling plants in Santanders, the region in which Barranquilla is situated.

Demands are now being put on the Colombian government to protect the lives of trade unionists, social leaders, students, defenders of human rights and an investigation into the facts to [bring to justice] the intellectual and material authors of the Black Eagles communiqué.

Original Colombian alert:
