Security Notice for Communal Buildings

There has been a significant increase in antisemitic incident levels since July 2006. The majority of incidents have involved hate mail, emails, verbal abuse, and graffiti daubings of Jewsih property. The risk of a terrorist attack has been raised by overseas events. This is in addition to the considerable existing terror threat from domestic UK pro Al Qaeda sources.
The Community Security Trust urges Jewish communities throughout the UK to ensure that security measures are followed, and that the fullest co-operation is given to security personnel at this sensitive time.
Suspicious activities and antisemitic incidents should be reported to Police on 999, and then to local security personnel, or the nearest CST office.
Members of the community should not allow this situation to deter them or their families from
leading their life as Jews in whatever way they choose.
Actions
• Ensure existing security rotas and procedures are properly followed.
• Check the outside of your building upon arrival, regularly whilst the building is open, and when it closes.
• Question and challenge all strangers and visitors to your building.
• Be alert for suspicious people and activities at communal buildings, including parked cars and unattended bags.
• Secure doors, windows and other points of entry to premises.
• All incoming post should be carefully checked before opening. If you are concerned about deliveries or packages then leave them untouched and immediately phone the Police and then the CST.
• Keep perimeters of buildings clear of clutter and rubbish.
• Check CCTV cameras are working, with clean lenses and recording tapes.
• Ensure external and internal evacuation routes are clear and understood.
• Synagogue congregants should disperse immediately after services.
• Co-operate with local CST personnel as necessary.
• Remain alert, and report all suspicious activities and antisemitic incidents.
• Review and update emergency procedures.
• Equipment such as torches, cameras, radios, note pads and pens, rota sheets
and emergency phones must be available at all times.
