14 Landrovers covered in Paintstripper

ELF | 16.03.2007 11:57 | Climate Chaos | Birmingham | World

Fourteen 4x4s were covered in painstripper in a Land Rover Dealership near Hereford in an action against climate change. Slogans were also sprayed while the vehicles were left to ruin.

This action was taken to warn any dealership specialising in these cars, that they are a target. Driving one of these vehicles is the equivelent to leaving the TV on for 32 years, cars like this must be stopped in their tracks.

Climate Change is the most massive globally destructive issue that is facing us today, we can not wait for anyone else to take action but ourselves. The new dawn is coming for direct action in defence of the Earth. There will be no more tolerance.

is it really a worth while action ?

For start paint stripper is one of the most highly toxic chemical night mares that exist, splash a few drops on your hands and you'll soon find out, I never use it and of course never buy it and would certainly
try to discourage other from buying it. Getting tooled up with a few liters of this and heading off to
carry out an environmental action seems to me to be missing the point.
This stuff will end up in a river, the sea, agriculture, drinking water.
The cars will have to be prepared for spraying, rubbed down to the bare metal and all the various layers of paint are highly toxic, more pollution.
Then they will be resprayed with more toxic paint and if who ever did gets caught they will probably
looking at a custodial sentence and your not going to do much to help the environment from behind bars.
Also gives the cops a good excuse to go and smash in a few front doors at random quite possibly of activists
who just happen to live in the area.

vigilante attacks

16.03.2007 13:27

The economic damage is irrelevant to the global capitalist economy -- all you are ensuring is that the people who work in that dealership will live in fear of what might happen to them/their work next.

This action will not prevent climate change ; and it will not change people's mind regarding 4x4s. It creates a "them against us" mindset, making it harder to actually change people's minds -- because they will see us as "the enemy" and will close up to any of our arguments.

But these are wasted words, are they not ? You have already decided what is "right" and what is "wrong". And there shall be no compromise, no acceptance, no attemp to understand and find solutions alltogther. No, instead you will pursue what you think is "right" by any means possible.

I make no difference between people who do a vigilante attack against a car dealership, and people who do a vigilante attack against a gay rights office building.

16.03.2007 14:07

You should have done something more fluffy. People's attitudes towards 4x4's can and are being changed without causing criminal damage and using dangerious chemicals.

How long would a TV have to be left on to make all that paint stripper?

This is an excellent action - ignore the pathetic comments

16.03.2007 14:21

I cannot see how a few lines of useless liberalism counts as an 'addition' to this news report.

-- We must make trashing 4x4's a sign of the times, much as throwing paint on fur coats and smashing the windows of banks.

-- Almost anyone can do these types of actions and get away with it.

unbelievable - you will drown in the coming chaos with your heads still in the s

16.03.2007 14:53

just as you cant have a war on climate chaos (or terror for example) so you cant take fluffy action against climate chaos
our lifes need to change beyond recognition - its not just 4x4s its using cars at all - we need to start using polluting energy only for the most emergency things
this needs to start happening now not tomorrow now
and even then its probably too late
the problem with this action is its not enough and its very late in the day
you cannot take this action from the context - the pollutant effect of the chemicals used is irrelevant in the bigger picture
if we dont change we are fucked
whats disappointing is not that you people exist with your heads inthe ground wittering about this kind of action when there is such a pressing need for far more radikal action
its that yours were the only responses so far
hopefully thats because 'real' activists dont waste there time commenting on indymedia
i wasnt able to let you be representative of our movements tho :-)
we have all the positive solutions and have always had them
our problem is stopping the destructiveness of our societies and opening up a space for the alternatives to be truly effective
if we cannot create our own shock therapy
mother nature will do it for us
hopefully these are more first drops from a storm that is building fast and coming now

doin sumthing even with paintstripper is better than siting on your arse typing and slagging people of!!..sure itl not be long before their kicking in our doors..they been doing that and fiting us up for years anyway u defeatist pottoss...would it be the same 4 u at campsfield?ooo dont try and stop that detainee being dragged of 2 his death by starting a fire ..is toxic...so is being dead or having no planet 2 die on......

direct action is valid

16.03.2007 15:11

There is a massive difference between murdering an abortion doctor and trashing SUV's, and only a moron would compare the two.

As for the suggestion to do something 'more fluffy' - property damage is not violent, nothing was harmed, only the profit margin. Using paint-stripper is more eco-friendly than burning them - and burning them is more eco-friendly than driving them.

'Intelligent debate' is getting us nowhere, it is an excuse to do nothing whilst the planet burns - it's time to act, immediately.

Hereford cops are actually doing their bit to help stop climate chaos by trashing their own vehicles

strange...

16.03.2007 16:39

Can anyone verify that this really happened????
Although it could be due to MI5 censuring the media - or at least that's how the conspiricists would have us believe it, there doesn't seem to be any credible verification - in fact the 'story' only seems to be reported on here, maybe someone's getting dreams and reality mixed up again?

Surely fire would have been better

16.03.2007 17:47

If the aim is to reduce harm, surely hammers or even fire would have been more effective and environmentally friendly than paint stripper since (as somebody already pointed out) the vehicles have not been badly damaged and will now be rubbed down and repainted. Fire would have written them off.

I'm a bit confused by the chosen location for this action. Isn't Hereford rural? Actions against 4x4 in cities makes a much clearer point.

?

hoorah for action

16.03.2007 18:15

people's minds being changed about 4x4s...oh really, you've not read the sales figures then. And we don't fucking have time.

100s of 1000s (WHO figure) are dying every year from climate chaos, it's down to us (UN IPCC), and we have to take radical action NOW or it'll be too late for humans (UN IPCC et al).

And verification...sigh...who's the conspiracist! Actions like this usually don't get in the mainstream media. You can doubt it took place, like you can doubt climate chaos exists as a problem, but you're either paid by an oil company, a fool, or in denial big time (combine above options at will).

about time

well really.......

16.03.2007 18:52

"Actions like this usually don't get in the mainstream media" so what's the point then? other than feeding your own twisted ego - how has this furthered anything? get a grip eh?

BTW - wasn't the great fear in the 70's of an iceage? - now it's warming, the iceage was proved to be a fallacy - why not man-made warming? go beyond the hype and deal with facts

Enviroloonies at it again.

Not only do they choose possibly the most environmentally unfriendly way to protest, the hypocrites probably travelled there by car.

And in another shining example of stupidy (re: protesting at Shell by carrying out demonstrations at Shell petrol stations which are franchises and, in the cases of the ones they protested at, not supplied from a Shell refinery..) they target a 4x4 dealership in one of the few areas where the people who buy them actually have a need for them and use them for their intended purposes.

Hypocritcal dumbasses, the lot of them.

Bob Hope

Confused

16.03.2007 23:01

So you target a Land Rover dealership in a mainly agricultural area, where I suspect that most of their customers are farmers and agricultural workers.
Are you all bloody stupid?
You obviously don't want us to be agriculturally self sufficient and to cut down on all the food miles that are currently needed to import food from abroad!
There is also the fact that a Land Rover is actually reckoned to be one of the most environmentally long lived vehicles in the world, with over 75% of the numbers produced still existing.
Did you consider the environmental damage you caused by your dangerous act?

Start to think about what you are doing and target the real polluters of this world, like the Toyota Prius and other electric vehicles that are having to use highly poisonous and polluting heavy metal based battery systems that use tons of energy to produce, last only a couple of years, and then are too dangerous to recycle.

16.03.2007 23:12

"And in another shining example of stupidy (re: protesting at Shell by carrying out demonstrations at Shell petrol stations which are franchises and, in the cases of the ones they protested at, not supplied from a Shell refinery"

Surely a business person such as yourself, Bob, would know that some money from a franchise goes back to the franchising firm at the end of the day - otherwise the franchisee would get sued for copyright! It doesn't matter if the refineries are owned by Shell, BP, Exxon Mobil / Esso - they are still equally responsible for abuses towards the world, people and animals.

"they target a 4x4 dealership in one of the few areas where the people who buy them actually have a need for them and use them for their intended purposes."

Doesn't matter who uses them, or for what purpose, still doesn't change the fact it's an SUV. What happened to bicycles, quad bikes or motorcross? There's no point in defending the SUV's because some farmer will probably use them to go about his duties involving animal abuse.

They all piss in the same pot

Get ur facts before you strike

17.03.2007 00:36

as stated 75% of all the landrovers ever built are still in exsistance in some form or another. thus reducing the environmental impact of having to replace them every 5 years which is the average life span of most cars. I own a 1993 discovery diesel Landrover and it runs on vegatable oil. should it be destroyed? How many of the so called radicals on here run their vehicle on veg oil? I am a builder by trade having the discovery I can use it as a van and a passenger car when needed. If I owned a prius or a mini I would also need a transit style van then I would be using 2 vehicles. Oh and by the way even without the veg oil at 30mpg I get better fuel economy than quiet a few "cars" on the road nowadys and the newer landrovers have even better fuel economy.

If you want to save the environment start killing cows the methane they produce does more damage to the environment than my landrover does.

17.03.2007 00:43

So next time our general hospital gets cut off in the snow and the vascular consultant can't get to the hospital do I not use my 4x4 to go and collect him and let a seriously ill person die, or take supplies to the old lady that lives in the middle of no where on her own, or assist the mountain rescue group. That's without the need for it to run my organic RSPCA approved farm.

Do you realise that all the cars in Britain cause less than 8 % of Britian's total emissions and 4x4s account for less than 10 % of that and Britain only contributes 2% of world global emissions, if we were to shut Britian down today, China will make up the difference in less than 2 years.

Do you also realise that the average modern 4x4 does over 30 mpg on the other hand there are planty of people carriers, executive saloon cars and sprts cars that do much less. Fact the typical Land Rover has a whole life carbon footprint that is lower than a Toyota Prius or Honda Insight, due in part to the carbon costs of producing the hybrids and because the Land Rovers will still be in use long after those hybrid cars are dead and buried.

The biggest cause of the so called global warming gases is the burning of rain forests, this accounts for nearly 30% of the worlds total emissions, wouldn't this be a more sensible target to campaign against.

Why don't you get a life and do something useful, that would make a real difference rather than practice the politics of envy.

Bilbo Baggins

You couldn't make this up

17.03.2007 10:20

Have you been drinking the paintstripper...? Perhaps you should try it because tipping it over vehicles isn't going to help. Your self-removal from the gene pool and subsequent cessation of copious levels carbon dioxide and bullshit-tainted hot air emissions from your body would go much further toward helping the environmental cause.

There are sensible, educated people working incredibly hard to promote environmental causes and all you do is unwind their work. I doubt very much however, that your blinkered and antagonised little mind will ever realise this.

Your epic stupidity has been highlighted here already so I won't waste my time repeating points. Suffice to say, painstripper crew, you are utter fuckwits of the highest order.

A bit of advice

17.03.2007 10:22

Global warming may or may not be man made, but carbon emissions are certainly adding to the problem. Its not something of the future either, its here and now. Removing all of the UK's carbon emissions wouldn't make one iotta of differance. Storms are getting stronger and we can expect more flooding etc. My advice to anyone reading this is go and buy a 4x4, your going to need it.

As for the direct action taken (or not) by some idiots - get a life, get a job, wankers.

17.03.2007 11:46

Oh dear. Pouring toxic chemicals over vehicles in a superb attempt to demonstrate a complete lack of any intelligence or common sense whatsoever.

You must be so proud, as the realisation that what you've done is truly pathetic dawns upon you.

These cars will be insured, and quickly repaired. Repaired using body shops that will spray lovely toxic paints back onto the cars. So you've just ensured further poisioning of our local environment.

These cars, typically, last much much longer than their 2WD equivalents. They will be in service for a great many years, whereas your average Ford Fiesta will be stacked up in the local scrapyard after about 15 years at the most, if it's lucky.

These cars, dust to dust, have a lifetime energy cost that is significantly lower than your beloved Honda Hindsight, or Toyota Pious, and they don't contain anylike like the quantity of precious metals and toxic chemicals that electric hybrid cars do.

In short, you're moronic simpletons of the highest order. Genetic failures doomed never to do anything useful with your lives other than demonstrate the futility that is environmental terrorism. I hope the police catch up with you and prosecute you under our misguided anti-terrorism legislation.

17.03.2007 13:18

I am absolutely outraged at this news. Only the other day (after winning the lottery) I went out and ourchased 4000 widescreen tv's and I am leaving them plugged in for 32 years and I was comparing this to driving my extensive fleet of landrovers and high speed and when I am 72 years old I was going to compare the two results?

Now it seems that some extremely intellectual green type dreadlocked smelly arf wit has the answer already?

1) I did not slag any one off.
2) I am not a cop, and based upon my comment I can't see any reason to think I should be.
But I seem to remember that bristol IMC had some serious problems due to the publication of an article
about a supposed attack on a freight train which happened to be loaded with motor vehicles , this attack also seems to have been an IMC exclusive and possibly never happened.
With this in mind I would be inclined to suggest that posting an unconfirmed criminal action on IMC is quite possibly a ploy by the Police to give them the excuse to harass IMC .
3) I am not part of IMC and thought I was adding a comment, I can understand why someone at IMC decided
that they would like to distance themselves from this sort of action and made it an addition.
4) I am certainly don't spend too much time sitting on my arse in front of my computer in fact I am involved with lots of positive actions from helping to promote Permaculture to being part of an International pressure group against a well known Pharma/ chemical company. I attended the Genoa G8 demo, since then I only go to small local demo's as I believe that everyone should concentrate on their own local issues and that committees should remain local, no head office in London.

5) I am not against breaking the law in certain circumstances, when for example a group of activists decide as a group to break the law and after the event they stick together and accept the consequences as a group through the court proceedings and specially if anyone gets time.
However after weighing up the pro's and cons any group that decided that vandalizing a car park full of land rovers was worth going to prison for would have to be a bunch of nutters !

Once the next big eruption happens all the CO2 man has produced in the last 100 years will be like peeing in the ocean!!
And in another 2 million years there won't be any sign man ever lived on this planet in the first place but there will be plenty of trees and wildlife so you guys will be happy.
We are just a pimple on the earth's ass and when we are gone something will replace us.
That doesn't mean I think we should be dumping paint stripper in streams.
Focus the resources on China and other deloping countries that were we will get the biggest bang for the buck is.

they're insane in the membrane

17.03.2007 21:06

Oh so many issues, so much nonsense - thanks to person who pointed out why all these comments from people in denial big time and other car/oil/death lovers!

Indeed, "go beyond the hype and deal with facts" - tt's climate chaos - forget warming, iceage trying to find holes stupidity, unless you want us all to die. 160,000 are already dying because of human-caused climate chaos.

Rural areas & 4x4s. Sigh. Don't know on what planet you live on, but most people in my rural area who have 4x4s are people with too much money and the need to reinforce their status. Do you not remember the time 'before 4x4s' - a few farmers etc had Land Rovers; others used snow chains in the winter, or had trailers for their work kit, and didn't make up bullshit excuses.

Of course the people who did this action will have balanced up the pros and cons of all aspects of the action - you don't take risks like that, and have to put up with all your bullshit (which I think is worse!!), without having thought carefully through the whole thing. Or do you just enjoy being patronising from your armchair.

"There are lies, damned lies, and then there are statistics." (Mark Twain) In any case, your stats about UK vehicle contribution to emissions (CO2 or are you trying to pull a fast one?) are bullshit. Per person, we produce vastly more CO2 than people in China. Their country is producing most of our consumer bullshit, industrial goods etc - so in effect, we have exported our emissions, and then we blame them for it. You twats.

As to whether these methods are valid or not (terrorist/freedom fighter blatherer too) - no-one in the original post said you shouldn't promote environmental causes, or was judgemental of other actions (like you are). But let me say - the people who did this I'd guess, like me, are promoting good things and trying to stop bad things, the one doesn't exclude the other. The Suffragettes and so many other examples of people in the past have used direct action and property damage to fight for causes (such as the right for women to vote) that now are considered everyday rights - they were slagged off at the time too. Yeah yeah, whatever. But I will say that we don't have time to wait around for raising awareness, till you recycle and change your lightbulbs and then defensively tell me that that is what you do. Big fucking deal - that's ordinary common sense, which I didn't ask you about. We don't have time, and when even governments and business are saying "we have to take radical action now or we're fucked", it's only 'head in the sand' folk who argue otherwise, and to your deaths you will go. I just hope for the sake of your children and mine, that there are more people out there who do care about having a future, and do think a little.

It's not about envy, my usefullness, intelligence, or that I have a job or a life (those are all original taunts - you should try harder next time!). So why are you all so defensive....

i wanna survive

A voice of reason

17.03.2007 22:40

A few facts as I said I am an organic RSPCA approved farm, I don't fully accept the global warming augment, but do accept the need not to waste resources.

We are a family of four, we grow as much of our own fruit & veg as we can or as far as possible only buy local seasonal produce ditto for meat.

We recycle as much as we can whether by re-using items ( we belong to several Freecycle groups), composting and sorting our rubbish, by doing so we put out just one bin bag a fortnight for collection as opposed to our council allowance of 3 a week.

We only have low energy light bulbs in the house and the main electrical circuits have a shut off switch which is thrown every night which means no items like TV etc are left on stand by. We have a wind turbine that supplies about half our power needs and all our heating is from timber from our own coppiced woodland.

90% of the meat from our animals is sold locally.

Despite living in rural area 2 miles from the primary school and 6 from the secondary, with little pavements my daughters cycle to school most days.

We do take holidays abroad but always plant enough trees to carbon offset the flights.

Our daily vehicle is a 50 mpg small people carrier.

So excuse me if I have cause to need to use my Land Rover a) for my business, b) occasionally I have saved lives and c) because this a free country and I feckin' well can. Oh and it runs on veg oil.

And by the way my earlier comments about the % of carbon emissions etc, figures Tony Blair used in a speech about climate change a few months ago, shows how little you know about you own cause.

Bilbo Baggins

Sort it out- think about where the real pollution is from...

19.03.2007 15:17

Targeting Landrover as a brand is both stupid and unfair. As many other people have argued not only do Landrovers allow the rural community in the UK to get on wih their work, but they also give access to remote areas in other parts of the world for doctors and the like. The modern Landrover is far less polluting than these lunatics make out, and is in fact much more comparable to a car than you might think.

I own a 1959 landrover, and as such this car has probably done the work of at least 8 average cars in its lifetime. The fact is that most of the pollution created by a car is during its manufacture. Modern hybrids may sound like the perfect soultion but in fact use more energy to produce than any other car:

 http://clubs.ccsu.edu/recorder/editorial/print_item.asp?NewsID=188

Couple this to the fact that the substances found in a hybrid are far more harmful than a conventional car (battery acids, heavy metals etc) and your prius is a lot less eco-friendly than my rover.

By keeping my rover on the road using second hand spares i am doing my bit for the planet. Also, if there is ever a time when it does go to the big scrapheap in the sky, all there is to dispose of is a pile of aluminium and steel. Much better than trying to dispose of the modern fibres, plastics and composites found in modern cars.

I remember once a Landrover spokesman defending the LR3 against the critics. According to them, you would have to drive an LR3 for 35 years continously to cause the same pollution as one trans-atlantic flight. Food transportation by plane has to be one of the biggest polluters in this day and age.

Then again, perhaps they were'nt out to prove a point, but were in fact out for some mindless damage. Its too easy to get locked up for damaging planes isnt it?

Quagmire

how amusing!

19.03.2007 17:52

Dear o dear!

So we find out what the average reader of uk.transport.anoraks actually thinks! What an insightful critique of global capitalism, direct action and concern for issues that affect non-4x4 car owners.

I'm not going to condone anything, seeing as this might well be illegal now, but I will say that smashing up some cars may well stop people from buying them. And that might stop car companies from making them. Maybe not, but then I didn't do it and I don't really care about a bunch of cars while Palestine and Iraq burn, and I have to pay my rent. Getting a sense of proportion seems sensible.

Still, going by how messed up the world is, and that a combined 45 billion pounds was literally wasted last week on some missles for Tony (which cannot be fired or targetted without the express permision of the US) and an Olympic 'games' (- I thought games were supposed to be fun -) which nobody in their right mind will want to watch for fear of dying of boredom, I doubt any kind of action is going to stop climate change.

But heck, arguing with someone whose life consists of jumping into their 4x4, running over countless animals and dropping their inbred children off at a private school because they are so dumb they can't cope in a normal school, - well it's a bit pointless, init?

idiots , silly little kids.

20.03.2007 15:28

when are you people going to grow up? do you really think that splashing a few cars is going to stop atmospheric pollution?
are you going to go and throw paint stripper at the ships that burn thousands of tonnes of diesel to bring us our plastic disposable crap from china? will you be throwing paint stripper at our armed forces because of the amount of energy used to make a war happen , not only in burnt fuel but in the production of weapons , bullets etc?
what about the massive chemical processing plants , one of which near scotland requires four massive gas turbines to creat the power it needs, which on a day to day basis is more power than the city of liverpool uses, will you be throwing paint stripper at them?

you need to grow up , climat change is a real issue but 4x4 cars are not the cause and if you are stupid enough to believe our goverments hype to smoke screen the real culprits then we are well and truely doomed.

my 4x4 by the way runs on green fuel as do a lot of others , you wouldnt know anything about that though would you.
