1st + 2nd May: Riots in Madrid

Spain, Madrid. On may the 1 st and may the 2 nd streetfights in the city centre. About 3000 people against an unknown number of cops. 80 people hurt (20 cops). 20 people captured by police. barricades were built and many police vans demolished. banks and shops looted.

Police used rubber bullets and teargas against the fighting people. People errected burning barricades as protection against the riots cops who meantime began to beat up every person on the street. A nike store, private companies, banks were demolished and looted by the people. cars burning.

This outburst of anger is also a reaction to the plans of the city council who wants to turn Malasaña in a consumer paradise and wants to destroy free spaces in this part of the city.

but, there´s still hope!

Hey Ross, why the negativity towards the actions taken in London. People choose to struggle and protest in many ways and indeed many ways can be successful. If you are so pissed off at the manner of struggle in the uk then why not initiate something along the lines of madrid yourself? it is easy to criticise from your computer, and a heck of a lot harder to take on the cops as they did in madrid.
