Arctic Ice Melting 3x Faster Than Predictions

Don Beck | 07.05.2007 21:25 | Ecology

A study published in the current issue of
Geophysical Research Letters reveals that
"the actual rate at which summer sea ice
had shrunk per decade during the past 50
years was more than three times faster than
an average of 18 of the most highly regarded
climate simulations."(1)

This is another in a growing number of reports
that are showing that the globe is warming
at an accelerated pace, not in the gradual
steady incline that was expected by the
scientists.

What is worse is that most of the public actually feels no change, certainly not
as much as the doom and gloom reports are screaming about. The biggest
affect on most of us is a 50 % reduction in the Coral Reefs of the Cayman
Islands that we like to snorkel.

Most people don't understand that the climate has momentum, and because of
its gigantic mass (atmosphere and oceans) it will continue in the current direction
for many many decades even if we could stop emitting CO2 entirely right now.

The fact that most people feel no effects at this time makes it very easy for the
skeptics, who are being funded by the energy giants, to place doubt in everyone's
mind about the seriousness of global warming.

This is truly a disasterous situation for the future. The scientists are finding things
happening in the past 2 to 3 years that they didn't expect to happen for decades.
We should all be very concerned and demanding change to green energy, because
the climate will eventually reach a point when there will nothing we can do to stop
changes that will get very drastic........and it will be happening sooner than anyone
thought possible.

Not credible

08.05.2007 06:50

So now CNN is considered a reliable source of information ? The same CNN who receives millions of US Dollars each year in advertising revenue from major oil companies, the same major oil companies who started and are now reinforcing the myth of human influenced climate change.

Take a step back and think about what this report is really saying. A group of people make a prediction about how fast the ice packs are melting, they then measure the actual rate of melt and find it faster than THEY predicted. Their conclusion - Catastrophy.

Not perhaps the conclusion that most people of a scientific mind what have drawn, what about the conclusion that their predictions were wrong and of course this does not address the issue of why the ice is melting, which is because there is a multi year Earth cycle of ice build up and melt which is well documented and proven.

The oil industry and the Western governments who work with them have perpetrated a myth of gigantic proportions with the eager help of misinformed campaigners who never took the time to study the scientific data behind the claims.

Geophysical Research Letters

08.05.2007 07:07

The article here refers to a series published in an obscure magazine called 'Geophysical Research Letters'. The editors of this magazine have one thing in common. They either work for Government organisations or Oil & Gas industry funded research groups.

Not really an independent viewpoint.

Time for Panic.

Expect Scientists, Economics, Politicians, and people who burn fossil fuels to be strung up.

Ozone absorbed lots of UV light, with weakened Ozone layer, the sunlight reaching Earth is hotter.

The total collapse of Civilization might not be enough to save Life on Earth now.

I note my comment was hidden

08.05.2007 09:13

I was not surprised to see my comment about this issue being hidden. The Indy-Media organisation in Britain has been at the forefront of publising the view that people are responsible for climate change by publishing various articles and comments.

Regretfully many of these articles have been based on the flimsiest evidence and badly flawed computer predictions. I doubt any other scientific theory has been formulated from such poor data. I will continue to send information to Indy-Media as it is vital the world understands the size of the deception.

Alan.

This post from the Capitalistic Daily Telegraph shows the real motivation. Money

Robin Small a researcher at Shell Oil said the following,

"It is not all about putting up windmills," he said. "Addressing this problem involves a whole range of potentially lucrative manufacturing and energy-saving innovations."

I can guess Doctor...

08.05.2007 11:32

Did your comment happen to contain the information that the sun is heating up,along with all the planets in our solar system?
I expect so-How would the brainwashed masses ever except the planned carbon taxes on our everyday lives if they knew we are not in control of our planets warming?
The global warming idea has become a tool to get us to pay more for EVERYTHING-(while the multinationals carry on pumping millions of tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere using their carbon credit scheme.
The big companies denied the existence of global warming for decades-now they have found a way to make money out of it,so all of a sudden it exists and its our fault...Yeah,right.

Get ready to be taxed on the very air that you breathe.

Jon, you can see what Doctor Galbraith wrote by using the following link

this shows all the comments, even the hidden ones.

I don't blame Indymedia or anybody else with an interest in Green politics because they were conned by this. It's easy to have faith in something that you want to think is true. When this is combined with a very well funded series of campaigns by oil companies it must have been quite easy to con us all.

I am grateful to my physics teacher at school who three years ago corrected a number of my misconseptions and views and put me onto the real facts.

Disinformation and Information Warfare

08.05.2007 12:58

It is very implausible that Dr Alan Galbraith, the believer in "Genesis creation" (see:  http://www.creationontheweb.com/content/view/290 ), is posting on this thread -- this thread has been hijacked by one or more disinformation opperatives who are pro-capitalism, this tends to happen quite a lot here -- we must be getting to them...

Not the Dr Galbraith listed above

08.05.2007 13:33

Dear ( foot soldier ) I am happy to confirm I am not the Dr Galbraith mentioned in your web link. I have never met this Dr Galbraith and have no idea of his views about this. I have no strong feelings about Christianity or other faiths one way or the other.

I am also becoming used to being called names as you have done. Abuse and name calling will not detract from the important facts of this issue.

Is this our fault too?

08.05.2007 13:41

While I agree that we should try to cut our emissions (though not through a global tax on us all),I find it very difficult to accept that us humans are the sole reason for the warming.

See these links:

http://www.heartland.org/Article.cfm?artId=17977 (NASA says sun and planets warming)

 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/1045327.stm (BBC:suns warming influence underestimated)

Our planet responds to the solar cycle. So do the other planets. We are being hoodwinked into another guilt complex over this. The governments of the world are rubbing their hands with glee in anticipation of the money they will try to screw out of us all while they carry on burning all the fossil fuels anyway.

Ever get the feeling you`ve been had?

Why hide some comments

08.05.2007 14:44

I'm a bit confused as to why some comments have been hidden here and some not. This Galbrith person answered the charge he was some nut case Creationist from the US and you hid it, what on earth for ?

There's got to be a few Dr Galbriths in the world.

In addition he made some good points in an earlier post which again you hid for no reason I could see. This is an important subject, we should see all the information that Indymedia contributors can offer.

First of all the two articles you gave are pretty old. Secondly the science has been shown that there has been very little variation in the Sun, and if there has been an effect here on Earth, it has been small.

The way to look at it may be to say many things can have an effect, and the CO2 is going to be the most influencial for a long, long time.

Don't let them keep on fooling you

09.05.2007 07:59

Don,

You have been badly misinformed. The Earth is going through part of its regular warming and cooling cycle as it has done for millions of years. I am sure you are a decent person but you are doing the job of the oil industry for them.

UV radiation is the stuff that 'burns' i.e. damages human skin amongst other things. IR or infra-red radiation/light, is that bit of the spectrum that is heat. Confusion with ozone and climate change is the simplest mistake. Even with a global scientific consensus on the fact that global average temperatures are rising, that climate change is happening, and that man-made greenhouse gas emissions are responsible for the increae, we have to be careful to remember to talk about it logically and scientifically.

There could be some solar influence, but not much

09.05.2007 19:56

Current thinking suggests that perhaps up to 0.1 degrees of the 0.6 degree rise could be due to solar variation - so there is truth in the solar warming effect, but it doesn't provide enough warming to account for the total (Sorry for the lack of reference, I read this a while ago). And even if there is money to be made out of it, which there probably is, not acting as a result would be like cutting our nose off to spite our face...
