Stop the Deportation of the Unek family to Turkey! Fax request and protest repor

TCAR (Tyneside Community Action for Refugees) | 07.06.2007 00:53

The Unek family have been told they will be deported to Turkey this Friday, including mother Marvili who has serious health problems, and 6 month old Ayse-Rojin. The family's solicitor is attempting to lodge a fresh claim, but the family have still not been told if their deportation will be stopped, and time is running out. Please take the time to fax, phone or email using the details and below and help us to stop their deportation.

On Wednesday 6th June activists from TCAR demonstrated outside Government Offices North East against the deportation of the Unek family to Turkey on 8th June. The family have lived in Britain since 2002, and have strong links in the community.

The British Labour government continues to support the fascist regime in Turkey as it brutalises, imprisons, tortures and murders progressive Turkish and Kurdish activists and their families. Everybody in Britain has a responsibility to take action against the British government's attacks on asylum seekers, which are intended to serve the economic and political interests of the British ruling class.

Please adapt following fax as you would like (attached and copied below), and send to:

North Shields Immigration Caseworkers -
Fax: 0191 2380480/ 0191 2572453

Liam Byrne, Minister for Immigration –
Fax: 020 7035 4745

Turkish Airways -
Fax: 020 87595814

If you have time please also phone North Shields Immigration Reporting Centre and ask to speak to the family's caseworker (Home Office reference U1024232/5) and ask them to log your concerns about Marvili's health, the fresh claim being submitted by the solicitor and the distress being caused to the family by the imminent threat of deportation.

If you have time you could also call:

Home Office Ministerial correspondence - 020 7035 4145
Turkish Airways - Phone: 020 77669300

The airline will claim it is not up to them, but they are well within their rights to refuse to carry passengers where they feel they are not fit to fly due to health problems, or where having them on the flight will cause undue distress to passengers.

Model Fax (feel free to alter):

Re: Forced Removal of Hidir, Marvili, Zuhan, Rengul and Ayse-Rojin Unek on flight TK1972 (Home Office ref U1024232/5)

Dear Sir/Madam

It has come to my attention that the Unek family have been issued with removal directions for 2.50pm on Friday 8th June 2007 and are due to be deported against their will to Turkey. This is despite a fresh asylum claim having been lodged by their lawyer. This means any forced removal will be illegal under British law. We think it is disgraceful that the family has still received no word either that their deportation has been cancelled, or that their claim has been refused. We are writing to ask you to halt their deportation this Friday to allow time for a fresh review of their case, and furthermore to grant them leave to remain in Britain.

We hope the Unek family is not detained unnecessarily, or even deported illegally. Marvili Unek, the mother of the family, has a tumour on the back of her eye, and suffers from asthma and panic attacks, which is being made worse by the terror of her imminent deportation. She is in no fit state to fly, and her health could be in jeopardy if she is taken into detention.

The family have been living in Britain since 2002. Marvili and Hidir’s eldest daughter Zuhan is at Newcastle College, who have submitted a statement to the family’s solicitor that she is an integral part of the community at the college. 12 year old daughter Rengul is doing well at her school in Heaton, and 6 month old baby Ayse-Rojin is only beginning her life.

If forced to return to Turkey Hidir Unek and his family face persecution from the Turkish state as communists, and are in justified fear of their lives.

Tyneside Community Action for Refugees opposes the racist and degrading treatment of this and every asylum seeking family by the current Labour Government. On Wednesday 6th June refugees and local people demonstrated outside Government Offices North East against the deportation of the Unek family. While families continue to be dragged from their homes, into detention centres and onto planes against their will then we will continue to oppose and expose the shameful actions of the Home Office on the streets and in the media.

We are happy to receive any response via our email  tynesidecarn@yahoo.co.uk

Yours Sincerely,

Name: ………………………………………………………………… Date: ……………………………….

Address: ………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
