Athens, Greece: Two anarchists and a female friend in pre-trial detention

imc athens | 09.06.2007 11:53 | Repression | World

Please circulate widely

On Tuesday 5th of June, two anarchists and a friend of theirs (all 20-22 years old) were arrested after trying to attack a car of the municipal police in the neighborhood of Paleo Faliro in Athens. During their arrest, all three were beaten up by the police to the point of collapse.

After being beaten further and tortured (mentally and physically) at the Police Headquarters in Athens, the Attorney General order the pre-trial detention of all three.

The condition of the girl is particularly serious and alarming since she is now facing health problems; the vicious attack of the cops and their severe beatings have caused her a nervous breakdown. At dawn she was transfered to two different hospitals in Athens, where the doctors only offered her first aid and refused to accept her for further treatment. The doctors treating her currently (her personal doctor together with the police doctor) both speak of a serious psychotic-related amnesia condition caused by extreme stress during her arrest and detention. Despite this fact the girl is still held at the Police headquarters while her lawyers are trying to get her to another Athens hospital. Should this not happen, she will be transfered to and held at the mental health hospital of the Korydallos prison in Athens.

Meanwhile, the two anarchists have already been transfered to prison.

Just don't guess

Unless you think that anarchists have to hang around only with anarchists. It doesn't matter whether the girl is an anarchist or not. What matters is the way the police treated all of them just because they perceived all of them as anarchists.

not guessing

anarchists don't hang around with other people if they're doing some kind of action. You completely missed my point, I could care less what they're called, but is anarchism a male thing now?

it's not a bad guess actually....

Let's see....3 people decide to attack a police car in Athens, a place not known for its minority of active anarchists. 2 of these people are identified as definite anarchists. Anarchists tend to work in affinity groups, small groups of people that they consider they know well and can trust- vital attributes when attacking a powerful and violent state apparatus like the police force. In view of this in all likelihood, although of course not definitely, all three would probably, probably identified as anarchists, in the very least so they know what to expect from each other if they fell, as they did, into the hands of the enemy. This is just the way it works, if you decide to act, aware of the consequences, then you prefer to strike with kindred spirits because, although generally an illusion, the fact remains that it gives you confidence and makes you feel stronger. Bearing these factors in mind, I think it's a bloody good guess, not too wde off the mark, somewhere in the ball field, not a million miles from the truth, that all three identified as and attacked from the position of anarchists.
Our thoughts are with them all 3, and their action, despite its tragic end, inspires us, for this will not be the last time we will see this wretched outcome and we refuse to let their passion and sacrifice be in vain. This is no leftist vanguard tactic, but the frustration and desires of people like you and me who feel increasingly trapped as the social prison of control tightens its grip, threatening to suffocate the spontaneaity of free will, to eradicate the possiblity of saying and meaning no!, of destroying the ability to choose anything but that which is allowed.

The people who fight back in this way is growing visibly week by week and whether anarchist or not, whether innocent or guilty, they deserve our respect and soldarity.
