Peaceful Anti-Foie Gras Protester Assaulted at ‘French Products’ stall

Animals&People | 24.06.2007 22:12 | Animal Liberation | Cambridge

Anti-Foie Gras protesters at the ‘French Products’ stall in Cambridge, receive a response that’s more than a little hostile…

Campaigners were once again at the ‘French Products’ stall in the market square, Cambridge for a small leafleting demo. The demo was eventful to say the least. One aggressive man, believed to be a trader in the market poked his finger at campaigners and insulted them, even threatening the property of a female demonstrator, no doubt putting off any potential customers. The ‘French Products’ stall worker was as usual irritated by the presence of the peaceful individuals and used bad language in his normal style but, this time, decided to go further throwing a bucket of water at one of the peaceful campaigners. However the stall worker hadn’t had enough and came back with another bucket of water and again aimed it at the campaigner. Even in the face of this assault the protesters stayed calm.

The police were alerted but ended up not helping and even suggested that protesters stood away from the stall to protest! The stall worker, probably worried about the police decided to pack up and go home. Rather than attacking peaceful campaigners the protesters believe now is the time for ‘French Products’ to finally adopt a Foie-Gras free policy, dealing with the reason why some members of the Cambridge public may be avoiding their stall.

The production of the product at the centre of this controversy, Foie Gras, is commonly made by stuffing food pipes down geese throats. The animals’ livers then painfully expand. Force feeding birds is unlawful in the United Kingdom, but because of trade rules the government claim they can’t ban Foie-Gras imports. Whilst a number of businesses big and small, are now Foie-Gras free zones, some traders continue to refuse to adopt policies against this controversial product.

The protesters hope that people will take the time to contact ‘French Products’ and let them know (politely) that it’s time to drop this abusive product from their stall. The campaigners would like to thank anyone contacting the business not only for their action, but for putting up with the ranting response they are likely to receive from ‘French Products’. The protesters would also like to warn campaigners that it might not be advisable to give any personal information to this business.

Poor Market Trader

I for one agree with the market trader. You are targetting the wrong people entirely in this campaign. Surely the producers would be the better target, not attacking a working class trader trying to make money in order to survive. Would you attack those in supermarkets on minimum wage for selling products in their stores?

I fully expect to receive abuse for this e-mail, but I am showing solidarity with the working class and feel that you should stop this harassment and find a more appropriate target for your anger.

I understand....

26.06.2007 12:13

I fully understand where you are coming from on this one, however as force-feeding birds is not lawful in the UK targeting producers would probably be best left to activists in producer countries. Besides which a legal campaign would probably not work, as demand for the product is what affects producers, not necessarily people with leaflets!

Supermarkets have already stopped selling this product and the only way to make Britain Foie Gras free is for all businesses, no matter how small, to stop selling the item. However, I would like to clarify that what we are doing is handing out leaflets and holding signs and allowing people to choose, to make there own minds up, about this important issue.

It is important to remember it is only a small part of the stall (they currently don’t even have it in stock) if they wish to put the publics minds at rest about this issue they simply need to agree to stop selling Foie-Gras.

To the animals that are being abused now I doubt it matters to them whether they are heading to a small or large business. However I do understand what you are saying and look forward to your reply, I hope you will see why people have chosen to peacefully protest at this stall, but, of course, you are free to hold a differing opinion. If you have any further comments please feel free to leave them here.

Maybe but....

27.06.2007 20:24

While it may be true that they are not sell Foie-Gras now, we would like a commitment that they will not sell/re stock it in the future. A statement that they do not sell Foie Gras now and will not do so in the future, would be fine.

Thanks for your support!

Who imports it?

29.06.2007 08:11

I wonder where the market trader got his supplies from?

Would someone like him, or, for example, small restaurants and delis, import it themselves, or is there a large wholesaler distributing the stuff? It might not be possible to directly target the overseas producers, but any UK-based importer would seem a prime target for some sort of campaign. I'd hazard a guess that foie gras would only be a part of their range, and the adverse publicity might put them off stocking it.
