Menwith Hill: Crap Arrest of the Week

C | 04.07.2007 22:41 | Anti-militarism | Sheffield

Two people were arrested at the 4th July Independence From America demonstration
at NSA Menwith Hill, one for wearing a shirt with the word "fuck" on it and one for protesting at the arrest.

It has been reported here:

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/07/375052.html

That he got a £80 fine under Section 5 of the Public Order Act:

"A person is guilty of an offence if he... displays any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening, abusive or insulting, within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress thereby.

Shirt swearing

07.07.2007 09:54

"He who makes peaceful protest impossible will make violent revolution inevitable" is a quote from John F Kennedy.
I overheard the arresting officer suggest that 'children and families' in passing vehicles could be offended by the shirt! Perhaps if they were playing 'eye spy' something beginning with F and had unsually good eye sight.

Is it a fixed penalty notice?

05.07.2007 00:09

I'm almost certain that it's a fixed penalty notice that he's received. If so - especially if he doesn't have £80 easy to hand - he should challenge it. It would then be down to the police to prove who was likely to be caused alarm or distress by what was written on the shirt, especially since it's only legible at a very close distance.

Lucky locals!

So the people round Memwith Hill can sleep safely in their beds, knowing that their local constabulary are protecting them from "Fuck" T-shirts. Presumably, they've already caught all their burglars, rapists, muggers ...........

as per usual public money is wasted on a nonsensical arrest.amazing how the police are interupting these idiotic politically correct laws especially considering that in my area their idea of community policing is flying overhead in hellicopters every fortnight or so.another easy arrest another statistic recorded, another target met, while real crime is not dealt with and real criminals go free.

Old ladies have not only said it, they've done it as well

Who the f**k is offended by 'fuck' outside a primary school ? Who reported him to the police as offensive ?

It is not an offence under English law to offend a policeman, well it wasn't 10 years ago at least. I know a lawyer who won a case in London based on that. Some Rasta was charged with pissing up an alleyway. A policeman approached him, tapped him on the shoulder, and the Rasta turned around and punched him. The defence was the initial assault had been the policeman tapping him on the shoulder since there had been noone else present to be offened by the urination, and so the punch was justified. Policemen in law are watchers and not judgemmental particpants of public order. Unfortunately the Rasta still got imprisoned as he threw something at the judge during the trial.

"He who makes peaceful protest impossible will make violent revolution inevitable"
Is that a quote I don't know ? He who speaks like that doest likely live in the 18th century. Quite right though, in law and in morality.

If we are going to have a clampdown on anyone sporting the F word, report the millions of muppets who wear FCUK Tshirts to the nearest cop and claim offence.

Only the police were offended!

06.07.2007 17:16

A protestor asked the shouted question "Is anyone offended by this shirt?" the only reply came from one copper who said he was, and one protestor who said that it offended their fashion sense! (a joke) The question was shouted out several times no-one was offended.
