Nottingham The Industrial Waste Dustbin of the Midlands

Jon Beresford | 14.08.2007 19:09

In a revised Planning Application submitted by Waste Recycling Group this week (don't be fooled by the name), Nottingham could become the industrial waste dustbin of the Midlands.

WRG plan to import an additional 100,000 tonnes of waste a year until 2066, to be burnt in the heart of our city. this will be imported from Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire. This is on top of the 150,000 tonnes of waste they already burn each year.

This poses a significant threat to human health and the environment through the release of heavy metals, toxic gases and global warming pollution.

Join our campaign to stop this expansion and call for more recycling, we until 14 September to air our views.

WRG have this week submitted a revised Planning Application to expand their dirty, polluting incinerator located at the heart of Nottingham's City. If given the go-ahead, Nottingham will become the industrial waste dustbin of the East Midlands, burning 250,000 tonnes of waste a year until at least 2066.

WRG are not content with burning Nottingham's household waste, they plan to import and incinerate industrial waste on our doorstep, polluting the very air we breath with a cocktail of global warming and acid rain gases, heavy metals and some of the most toxic and cancerous chemicals known to man.

Now is the time to again start writing, emailing, calling and visiting councillors asking them to object to Waste Recycling Groups application. Councillors contact details, who will vote on the revised application are listed at the end of this email. Please start contacting them now, we have until 14th September to get our comments in. Please keep NAIL informed of their response or lack of response.

The original application was unanimously rejected by the Development Control Committee last year, however WRG have made a few minor changes to their application, so the battle starts all over again.

In the revised application, WRG have made architectural changes only, otherwise it is the same application. They still intend using 20th Century technology to mass burn waste without any front-end separation and recycling.

Summary points;

1. The application makes it very clear that they plan to import commercial and industrial waste from outside Nottingham.

2. Technically the application is the same, they still plan to expand to 250,000 tonnes per year until 2066
WRG want to increase the hours of receiving waste from 7am to 4pm Mon-Thurs, 3pm Fri, and 11am Sat) to 8pm Mon-Fri and 1pm Sat

3. WRG do not refer to the Primary Care Trusts Health Impact Assessment or address the health concerns raised by the PCT Letter Sent to City Councillors

In a laughable letter sent to each and every city councillor and a subsequent press release, WRG claim;
WRG - Have worked with one of the UK leading architectural practices and have produced an `attractive and contemporary building that is worthy of Nottingham's skyline that complements and supports neighbouring regeneration effort'
We say that, an incinerator is an incinerator no matter what colour you paint it and you can't polish a turd!
WRG - `Using tried and tested technology, Eastcroft generates renewable energy'

We say that, there is nothing renewable about burning a un-sustainable resource, if the waste was instead recycled we could save substantially more energy than is ever recovered in Eastcroft, the Waste of Energy facility.

WRG - `An expanded Eastcroft will enable Nottingham to join the Premier League of European cities that use sustainable low carbon approach to managing waste and generating heat and power.

We say that, Eastcroft is already one of the most polluting incinerators in the UK, receiving a third of all warnings issued by the Environment Agency, an expanded facility
will drive Nottingham to the top of the Premier League for burning industrial waste and will further damage Nottingham's tarnished image

If it's as clean as they claim, ask yourself why does it need a 200 ft high chimney ?
