Campaign Meeting: “Civic Activism in Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush”

What is the purpose of this campaign meeting? All around the borough, voluntary centres are suffering drastic cuts to their funding at the hands of the Conservative-led Council. For example: the Horn of Africa Community Group lost all of its funding which supported two community worker posts.
The Law Centre lost 60% of its Council grant with effect from 1st October 2007, directly threatening a range of vital services to tenants, leaseholders, immigrants, employees and families.

We must show the Council that we cannot just stand back and allow this to happen. We are not confined to any particular areas of the borough – we aim to unite all. Our venue, north of the borough, hopes to attract more from the north to join our campaign and make it even stronger.



HAMMERSMITH COUNCIL SUED OVER LAW CENTRE CUTS - HIGH COURT PROCEEDINGS ISSUED

Three individuals who live or work in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham today issued judicial review proceedings in the High Court to stop the Council cutting the local Law Centre’s grant. The three are challenging a proposed 60% grant cut, and applying for a ‘fast track’ order for the case to be heard urgently. The three individuals are:

Long leaseholder represented by Law Centre at Leasehold Valuation Tribunal: ‘the centre provides such an important service, without the help of the Law Centre in King Street, I know I would have lost not only my home but also my sanity’;
Sue Willman, solicitor for the claimants, said: ‘This cut will reduce access to justice for Hammersmith residents, especially those who are disadavantaged and most in need of legal advice at a time when legal aid is already in short supply. The Law Centre's clients are calling on the High Court to intervene because the decision is unlawful and discriminatory.'
