Common Purpose made me an anarchist (again)
27.09.2007 17:18
There is a real critique to be made of Common Purpose, but (in as much of this video as I could be bothered to watch) it's not made here. A large part of what Common Purpose does, by bringing together 'emerging leaders' across the public, private and voluntary sectors, is to school people, in a very low-key, drip drip drip, in the mundane everyday practicalities of running organisations and cities in a way that fits well with broader neo-liberal politics. In other words, Common Purpose tries to lead people to the conclusion that our cities will be better if there was better understanding between people working in the public, private and voluntary sectors. It essentially promotes public-private partnerships as the best form of local governance. That's the purpose of their networking events and courses - not (necessarily) to forge links at the top of big organisations (let's face it, those links are already there), but to create horizontal links between middle and low-level managers and professionals in different types of organisations in an area i.e. the people who end up having to make the politics and policies established at the top of those hierachies actually work on the ground, day to day.
Like many charities, they're are a shit employer, pay peanuts and consequently (in London at least) have a really rapid turn over of staff.
But, there's something of an ironic contradiction in their approach to leadership - they repeatedly tell participants in their courses that, if you identify something that needs to change in society, don't rely on other people to do it for you - do it yourself...
I don't think we need to get too excitied about Common Purpose as a 'cancer at the heart of society', but I'm open to hearing *sensible* evidence to the contrary.

It's against democracy

As far as I can see, there are no grounds for such an organisation to exist as a charity whilst taking public monies and using public building to conduct its plan and if it had honest intentions then they'd plainly want to be public about it.
I've actually watched all of the video to form a proper opinion unlike Otter, who's comments I find are verging on xenophobic but certainly untenable given that he/she declares not to have actually 'been bothered' to have looked at the evidence.
I applaud Brian Gerrish, an ex-naval officer and The Freedom Association for making this video which I've passed to many people ( 20 or so ), who've all watched the full video and agree with the above conclusions.
All people should watch the vdeo and judge for themselves ! And do so quickly.
BNP ? Don't make me laugh. These are totally apolitical everyday people who have a right to question this hideous fifth column in our midst and to take action before it's too late.
