So is Mike Norton's attempt to muzzle Ibrahim Mousawi motivated by a genuine concern to protect the city from terrorists? The right to freedom of speech is one we should cherish. And only in the most extreme circumstances should it be denied. Take away someone's right to speak publicly and accusations of censorship quickly follow. On top of that there is the risk that banning someone results in them gaining extra publicity for their beliefs or their cause.
To outlaw someone is to give them instant notoriety. All of these concerns apply in the case of Ibrahim Mousawi. But because of his alleged links to Hezbollah they are multiplied. Yet there are occasions when the needs, or in this case the security of the many, outweigh the needs or the security of the few or the one.
And here there is a case for erring on the side of caution. To deny one man the right to speak may be the price we have to pay for preventing unpalatable extremist views from being aired. Protecting freedom goes much further than protecting freedom of speech. It involves safeguarding people from attack and injury.
And allowing extremism of any kind is always a risk. For democracy does not mean giving people the right to say what they like. It flourishes only because people agree to play by its rules and behave responsibly. And occasionally it means curtailing the freedom of one person for the good of others.

The fact is nobody has been able to attribute one hateful, racist or anti-semitic remark to the speaker, and yet are happy to vilify him simply for being associated as a Hezbollah peacemaker. 87% of Lebanese support Hezbollah resisting Israel. So according to Andrew 87% of Lebanese should be regarded as fascist, simply for not wanting their country brutalised and occupied. Isn't that racist ?
Maybe Andrew is too young to remember when the name Beriut was a by-word for devastation and danger. You'd walk into a bad neighbourhood, see a burnt-out car and a couple of bullet holes in walls and you'd say 'This is Beriut'. Except it didn't really compare. I've met a survivor of the Sabra and Shattilla refugee camps who witnessed their family being slaughtered in '82 thanks to the first Israeli invasion. How would Andrew explain to them the difference between losing all your family to the Nazi slaughter and losing all your family to the murderous excesses of the IDF ? Certainly no one is perfect and I don't claim the Talebans or Saddam Hussein were choirboys but, FYI, the opium exports from Afghanistan fell to 0 in the year 2000.
This means that the Taleban actually greatly helped vulnerable youths the world over (including the UK of course) not to become victims of heroin or get out of it, thus saving tens if not hundred of thousands of lives from the abject slavery of addiction or premature death by overdose.
Of course, as everyone knows this has been completely reverted by the war on Afghanistan, and I have personally lost one dear friend because of it.
And FYI as well, someone has been recently condemned to death under the current Karzai governmemnt for reading an article on women's rights... Renders your justification for the extermination of Talebans pretty moot doesnt'it ?
As for Iraq, Saddam, whose country was the most equalitarian, had the highest level of litteracy of all arab nations, etc..., commited two unbelievable "crimes".
First, he was a real challenge to Israel's regional military supremacy and was (along with the late Rafik Hariri) the strongest baker of the palestinian cause.
Second he dared to challenge the validity of the oil-monarchies established by the British in the 30's with his invasion of Kuweit.
Those are certainly the real reasons for the war, the demonization/eradication/extermination of the Baath Party/Sunni arabs of Iraq and the murder of Saddam and his sons.
