Repost of a report of protests outside Chiapas State Government HQ

On behalf of Gabriela | 27.03.2008 21:01 | Repression | Social Struggles | Zapatista | Liverpool | World

English/Spanish Translation report of hunger strike and police reaction in Chiapas by an eye witness Gabriela.

Wednesday, March 19 2008, in front of the Chiapas state government
headquarters in DF
From 9: 00 a. m.

until 6 in the evening around 15 comrades who are adherents to the Other Campaign, including Dr. Selvas, Mariana Selvas, and Edith Rosales, recently released in the Atenco case stemming from May 3 and 4, 2006, went to the Chiapas state government headquarters in DF to demonstrate our support with the hunger strike being carried on by the political prisoners in Chiaps.

Our aim was to fast for one day, demanding the immediate freedom of these prisoners.

We’d just finished hanging signs, banners, and other propaganda that we had prepared for this fast, when a group of Mexico City police (SSP) showed up to “protect” the Chiapas headquarters.

Things stayed calm as we spread the word about the comrades unjustly held prisoners in that state until one of the women from the independent media began to put up an EZLN flag along with the propaganda we had already put up.

The police got very aggressive and started pushing and shoving the comrade around.

One valiant cop hit her, making everyone really angry, especially the male comrades who were with us.

The act of aggression could have resulted in a lot more violence, but fortunately, a comrade who works in
a Human Rights group was there, and helped calm the situation down.

We had planned to be there all day to show our support, so after the aggression we stayed on.

We were almost ready to leave when the wind blew away one of the signs we had put up at the government headquarters.

I wanted to save it because it had a drawing on it done by one of our comrades and we frequently use it in this kind of activity.

Once again the police got very aggressive.

They refused to allow us to take down what remained of the sign, and things got violent again due to their hostility. This time I, Gabriela, was the one who got shoved around.

The cops obviously feel like “real men” when they get a chance to use force against women.

Since it’s harder to get the word out about this kind of situation during the holidays, we ask your help in denouncing the brutality of the Mexico City police.

This is our denunciation and we hope you can help us publicize it.

All right!
Sincerely yours,

¡Vale!
Fraternalmente.

Gabriela (Colectivo la j k hormiga).
