Vera Manda Kunde and Kenni Musada Back home in Leicester
Amidst all the trouble in Yarl's Wood yesterday, some good news. Vera had a bail hearing by video link with Birmingham immigration court and was granted bail.

Mothers detained in immigration centre hold 'naked' protest
A group of mothers held in the Yarl's Wood immigration centre have staged protests over the extended detention of children. They argue that locking up minors is cruel and say being kept in close confinement has caused outbreaks of viruses.

Many of the women, who have been awaiting deportation from the Bedford immigration removal centre for months, stood naked in a corridor and have gone on hunger strike in a bid to make their demands heard.

Protest in support of asylum seeker Rose
Protesters staged a demonstration outside Government offices yesterday in support of an asylum seeker who is facing removal from the country. Rose Aboukha has lived in Newcastle for three years since fleeing her native Uganda, fearing for her safety. But she was detained on Monday morning in North Shields police station and members of Tyneside Community Action for Refugees (TCAR) held a vigil outside.

Ex-chef 'sent home to die'
A former chef at a Newmarket Indian restaurant, who is in urgent need of a kidney transplant, is being condemned to death by a Home Office decision to deport him, a friend has claimed. Failed asylum seeker Tajel Uddin, who was arrested by immigration officers in front of diners at the Essence 2 restaurant in Park Lane, is currently undergoing kidney dialysis three times a week at West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds. But similar treatment and an eventual transplant would cost him between £20,000 and £30,000 in his native Bangladesh, where he has to pay for his treatment.

54 Burmese migrants suffocate in packed lorry

Fifty-four illegal Burmese migrants being smuggled by traffickers in southern Thailand suffocated in the sweltering confines of a tiny seafood container lorry yesterday after the air-conditioning system failed.

Some of the 67 survivors told how they were 30 minutes into the journey to the resort island of Phuket, where they hoped to find work, when conditions became unbearably stifling.
