Cannabis Campaigners say "Stick it to them"

Members of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance (LCA) are calling for supporters of legalisation to make themselves heard in next week's local elections although they themselves will not be standing.

The LCA is asking people to either write on their ballot papers or attach a suitable sticker to show their feelings against the injustice of the law that punishes victimless cannabis users and prevents beneficial uses of the plant.

The LCA was itself a registered political party from 1999 until 2006, and contested over 70 seats. At the last general election they aired their policies on the first ever pro-cannabis party political broadcast on TV in Wales. In November 2006, they deregistered.

Alun Buffry, previously the Nominating Officer for the Party, and now Treasurer and a spokesman for the pressure groups said: "When we fought in elections we had a voice - but we were so often approached by candidates from other parties claiming that they also wanted legalisation and asking us not to stand.

"Whilst it's true that some of them have called for changes in the law to favour a more tolerant approach to cannabis use, they - often somewhat adamantly - refuse to push for it.

"They say they support legalisation but we hear nothing from them - either about the Justice of punishing victimless users of cannabis or the potential uses of hemp (also called cannabis).

"There are over 5 million cannabis users in the UK, many more have tried it, and we believe that the law that punishes them is unjust and doing more harm than good.

"It is serious issue, on local, national and international levels, concerning a lot more than just cannabis smoking. It is an issue that concerns justice and Rights, health and medicine, education and employment, industry and agriculture, fuel and the environment, taxation and trade...and until those parties realise that and serve as our voice, how can we give them our votes?"

"So we are asking people to let them know that, and whether or not they choose to vote for a candidate, to either write the words "Legalise Cannabis" on their ballot papers or use a sticker that the LCA can provide.

"Will those votes be counted - who knows? Let the candidates argue about that. All we want is to make our voice heard"
