Amdani Juma's deportation flight cancelled on day of removal

Amdani Juma's deportation flight to Burundi via Nairobi on Kenya Airways flight KQ101 was cancelled at zero hour yesterday on Tuesday June 10th as an application for an judicial review, accepted by the High Court, was finally acknowledged. He is now awaiting a bail hearing on Monday.

No thanks to the Home Office who could have ended his misery by discretion without forcing him to go through another court hearing (and still could), or to the immigration enforcement unit who kept him waiting until the last minute.
Supporters visited him all afternoon at Colnbrook immigration removal centre (run by private contractor Serco with transportation support from Group 4), and stayed well after the flight was seen to take off from Heathrow airport.
Amdani's legal battle to stay has only just begun, and he is not yet out on bail. He was also taken away by the Home Office during visiting on Wednesday evening and was moved immediately to Campsfield detention centre in Oxfordshire.
His bail hearing is set for Monday 16th June in London so he will most likely remain in Campsfield until then.
But we can all be relieved and happy he was not on that flight (whilst knowing it would probably be carrying other forced deportees), and we look forward to having him back in Nottingham soon. The campaigning will continue in earnest.

Serco - Bringing service to life

They have a finger in nearly every tainted pie you can imagine. This includes: private health care; prison health "care"; UK Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) at Aldermaston; databases for schools to enable behaviour to be managed more effectively; support contracts at RAF Northolt; police support including technology-enabled services ranging from intelligence systems, command and control; secure and covert mobile communications; running four private UK prisons.
Serco have developed a confidential intelligence application for the UK Home Office’s Immigration and Nationality Directorate, named Mycroft. They also tag asylum seekers. They run Colnbrook and Yarlswood IRCs and claim: "Our staff care for the wide range of nationalities in our centre with respect and understanding. We provide education and recreation facilities and ensure detainees can maintain contact with friends, families and legal advisers." What they should say is that they lock up innocent people 23 hours a day, force them to use toilets in their cells without proper doors, deprive them of items needed to fulfil their religious beliefs, and make up such byzantine rules that it's almost impossible for visitors to jump through the necessary hoops.
All this is just part of the story. It must make their shareholders a pretty profit. Their 2007 preliminary results were £2811m (up 10.3%) in revenue. There's an awful lot of money to be made out of human misery, and Serco know exactly how to do it.

But he is still at risk. He has to win the Judicial Review now. This is only the end of the beginning.
But, for now, let's be happy for Nottingham and for Amdani.
