Eastside transport group | 22.06.2008 09:55 | Climate Camp 2008

The Eastside transport group are arranging transport for people and stuff to and from Climate Camp.

We have not made any decisions about transport options yet as this will largely depend on the answers to the who, what and when questions. So if you would like transport to Climate Camp please contact us as soon as possible.

Please let us know: -

When you want to travel down
If you have a preference for a return date
What you will be taking with you (if more than a rucksack sized bag.)
If you have access to a minibus or a van.
If you have access to a trailer.
If you have a bicycle you want to bring.
If you have a bicycle you can lend for other people while at CC.
If you have any special needs.
If you have any transport mode preferences.
If you think we should have an Eastside minibus at CC for the duration.
If you think coal should be left in the ground

Errrrrr I thought we settled this last time ? When coming to the camp, don't arrive in a car, a minibus, a van, a motorcycle or any other carbon fuel based engine. Just because you are involved with the camp doesn't give you some sort of special dispensation to overlook the impact of oil based power generation on the world.

There are trains running to the site area, these are not 100% carbon free but are by far the best option, once at the station, walk or cycle. If you have kit then carry it, if it's heavy bring friends, if its bulky use a cart or wheelbarrow.

We do not need to see the same scenes as the last camp where we gave speeches about reducing vehicle use to TV crews while in the background there were lines of vans and cars dropping off campers.

carry on camping

Please ignore Carry on Camping

Climate Camp will be inclusive and cater for people of all ages and abilities.
You will NOT to have to cycle to walk with all you kit for several miles from the nearest station.

Eastside Transport will ensure that all who want to attend CC can do so.

Carry on Camping post is wrong, and my guess a troll wanting to undermine CC.

It may mislead readers and should be removed, and then this one can be also.

No need for vehicles is a good call

23.06.2008 12:17

without wanting to speak for -carry on camping- I think that what he or she was trying to say was that where possible peeps should not use cars or vans unless its really necessary. I could see how a wheelchair user for example might need to use a vehicle or perhaps somebody with children but the majority do not and this main call above which talks about a group of young, fit healthy individuals using a vehicle is just simply not acceptable. A train and a bike is the way to go for those who can do it. We must remember the PR value of lots of people being seen to practice what we are preaching, no easy targets for the Daily Mail etc and another camp with hundreds of rental vans and smoke belching old cars blocking the local roads is a massive mistake.

Think how good it will feel to cycle to the camp, hearing the sounds as you get closer and having the satisfaction of knowing your carbon footprint for transportation was zero.

I do think that sometimes people confuse the climate camp with a festival. This is about learning, working and educating others not about saying,
"my needs are more important than yours so it's ok if I use a vehicle"
