Happy Birthday Binyam! actions

The last Londoner in Guantánamo Bay turns 30 on 24/7 - after six years of illegal detention, he is suicidal and on hunger strike and facing the prospect of an unfair trial and the death penalty. In the run up to his 30th birthday, take action to get the British government to stop his trial and have him returned to this country.

Binyam Mohamed will be 30 years old on 24 July. Binyam has spent one in five of those years in illegal CIA detention. Currently on hunger strike and facing the prospect of an unfair trial and possibly the death penalty, we invite you to "celebrate" Binyam's birthday by taking action that could save his life.



There are a variety of things you can do between now and the run up to 24 July:

1 – Send a birthday or greetings card to Binyam Mohamed (sooner rather than later):

This would show Binyam that people outside do care about him and if enough cards are received, it would send a strong message to the US military running the detention facility that the rest of the world is not unaware of what is going on there.



2 – Send a "birthday card" to Gordon Brown and ask him to:

¨ Take action at the highest level to secure the release of Binyam and his return to this country (which has already been requested)

¨ Release documentary evidence to the American authorities that proves that Binyam was a victim of "extraordinary rendition" – documents that could see him released

¨ Understand that 6 years is more than enough – it's time to honour our moral obligations

Send your birthday card/postcard on or around 24 July 2008 to:

A suggestion is to buy plain postcards and get people in your Amnesty group, STW group, church group, Islamic circle, other faith groups and trade unions, social groups, football team, etc., to draw pictures on the postcards and/or write their own messages above the lines of the message above to the Prime Minister.



3 – In the run up to the 24/7 demonstration, the LGC has been given permission by the police to hold a 24 hour a day demonstration for 7 days outside the US Embassy from Friday 18 July to Thursday 24 July. If Binyam can send six years in illegal detention, we can spend one week outside the US Embassy asking the Americans to drop the charges and close the kangaroo court.

If you only attend ONE demonstration this year, let this be the one. Bring your pots and pans, whistles, banners, instruments and let's make some noise for Binyam! This is an authorised action.
