Six people arrested at BNP rally

Six anti-fascist protesters have been arrested at a British National Party festival being held in Derbyshire.

About 40 demonstrators clashed with riot police outside the BNP's annual Red, White and Blue event taking place in the village of Denby.

The arrests happened during clashes in which police were pelted with stones.

Police armed with batons were able to quell the disturbance. A helicopter and dogs were also brought in to deal with the situation.

Barricade thwarted

About 250 officers were involved in the operation.

Earlier some 700 demonstrators from Unite Against Fascism, the TUC and Unison took part in a march from the nearby village of Codnor.

Extra officers were drafted in to control the march as a group of protesters tried to break a police cordon which had been put in place.

They waved placards as they walked down the village high street to the field where the festival is being held.

Assistant Chief Constable Peter Goodman said: "We did have an incident which took place with a small number of people, but the majority of people who have come here today behaved impeccably.

"A small group attempted to barricade the road.

"We responded quickly and efficiently and they were not successful in creating the barricade."

Earlier in the week police in Derbyshire invoked special public order laws to restrict the number of protesters who planned to attend the rally.

We could have read that direct from the BBC so what exactly is the point of reposting it here just to have it hidden? Indymedia is meant to be about 1st reports from the street, not reposts from the corporate media. There was nothing to stop people on the scene from making reports to indymedia and if there is a gap in decent reporting then we should be working harder to remind people that grassroots media requires involvement from the grassroot, rather than copying and pasting mainstream coverage.

As one who rarely has little reason to explore the BBC UK pages

16.08.2008 16:28

I'm glad this report has reminded that Derbyshire enjoys tv and radio broadcasting and gets good value for its license fees.

I just found the link -  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/derbyshire/7565354.stm
& it seems there are loads of articles by the BBC on the BNP who they link to in the side bar.

thanks for that C&P, "BBC paster"! Perhaps the next reports will be genuine IMC grass root on the scene licked pencil in hand vidcam stuck to ocular nerve on the edge ducking and diving stopping the fash authentic.

state run pro pig fascism

The "attack" on this festival and its guardians was neither an attempt to gain favourable media publicity or a commendable pat on the back by the state and the PIGS who did everything they could to disallow this protest. Let's not forget that any movement of self-defence (and we should never forget that any attack on aggressive, and repressive institutions with unlimited power is SELF-DEFENCE) is always reported in a bad light by the media. Smash EDO's march in Brighton this June, and the Climate Camp are just recent reminders of the State, media, and police roles in undermining activists and legitimising the murder of humans and our environment carried out by the State itself and Enterprise. Therefore I commend the action of the dedicated anti-fascists who in defence of their physical and spiritual livelihoods (as well as the livelihoods of immigrants who suffer daily attacks by institutions such as the BNP and the State/Police/Media) demonstrated their determination to defend themselves rather than passively continue to be subjugated in your so called democracy.

Fuck the BBC.

blimey!

never had such a strong reaction to pasting a bbc report before! but agree with a21, that whenever we break the state's monopoly on force we are never going to get a favorable reaction from the mainstream media, which illustrates my point (which i make frequently)which we can only use them to a limited extent, and never should design our action/strategy around there probable reaction.

where were all our comrades

17.08.2008 17:09

where were all our comrades we were talking of thousands and we ended up with a couple of hundred .for those who promised to come and didnt turn up "you let our movement down when a good turout would of sent a message to the fash that we are here and here to stay" i personally felt sick when i realised the couple of hundred there were all we were going to get.
at the end of the day i was not sure who was worse the fash scum or the fascist police we pay the police their wages and they worked hand in hand with the scum . i saw them at the gate all smiling and chatty with the so called security.
