Barclays ATM glued

Militant Antispeciesists | 25.08.2008 23:15 | SHAC

Shortly after workers fixed an ATM in the westcountry (we wonder why it was broken in the first place.....) militants visited the capitalist machine and applied liberal amounts of super glue to the card slot.

The New York Stock Exchange must drop HLS or actions will continue against financial associates. If you don't like it Barclays sell your NYSE shares or continue profiting from misery and expect more direct action. We will not wait for labs to close with banners, shouts and propaganda; we will close them ourselves.

Reality check; one of many actions

26.08.2008 18:23

Check  http://directaction.info there have been over a douzen actions against Barclays ATMs this month. Last time they received this much attention, they dumped HLS and they will do it again. It's called stopping the puppy killers. With some of the biggest pharma companies like Roche it took douzens of actions, but they all cut their ties eventually.

The action was dedicated to shactivist Dan Amos, it was targeting the very company who Daniel himself dedicated himself to campaigning against  http://www.shac.net. Solidarity for political prisoners imprisoned by the police state is more than most do against the injustice.

Supergluing an ATM? Wow, you crazy radical you. That should bring the UK banking system to its knees. The fact you even post this as some sort of victory shows what a pathetic little cretin you no doubt are. What did you do afterwards? Smash up a few bus shelters? Maybe vandalise a phone box? That'll teach BT a lesson huh?

Participate in some meaningful action or fuck off. Either way, don't bore me with the juvenile nonsense you posted above. Kids round my way do this sort of thing on trick or treat, for god's sake.

Reality Check

This act of vandalism against barclays will have cost barclays and their customers money. So that will hurt them - albeit in a small way. Yes, its not bringing down the bank but how do you suggest bringing the bank down?

Dont knock someone who got off their arse and decided to hurt barclays in whatever way they saw most appropriate.

Yes

Hmmmm

26.08.2008 19:28

But that's my bank! Good job the ATM was working at my local branch or I'd have gone hungry that night. Good to know that as a customer (through no fault of my own - Barclays took over the bank I chose!) I'm someone who deserves to lose money even though I'm an anarchist who is also vegan. Strange analysis these animal rights people have. Does seem a bit moralistic and self-rightious really. Who isn't guilty of some connection with capitalism- buying food, clothes, books, etc? Are we supposed to rid our lives of any association with companies who invest in animal abuse, pay their workers crap wages, put workers lives at risk, build prisons, support right-wing campaigns, are homophobic etc. Might be difficult.

I'm not saying don't do direct action but maybe have a better understanding of how capitalism ensnares us all. Break the windows, leave the customers alone!

PS. Looking forward to a stream of bile masquerading as comment.

constructive bile, directed against barclays

i think that when the consumer has to participate in this capitalist system, they have a duty to be ethical with their choices. Relating to Barclays, this is a company that supports animal abuse inside HLS, contributes to environmental deforestation and provides huge loans to damming companies in Iceland, etc. Scratch just a little below the surface and you realise that this company is dirt and should not be supported in any way. Banks only help the rich, and Barclays wont make their money at my expense.

i agree that it is difficult to live completely parallel to capitalism, but you can purchase from ethical companies, and not buy into their consumer culture - share and reuse books and clothes, only take what you really need etc.

in most places there are multiple ATMs, so i'd hope this action would not inconveniece most innocent people.

animal rights and wrongs

27.08.2008 12:14

I think this shows why even when (or especially when?) it's violent, uses anarchy symbols or appropriates the imagery and language of antifa the animal rights movement tends to be merely an expression of militant liberalism.

"i think that when the consumer has to participate in this capitalist system, they have a duty to be ethical with their choices".

Er, we all have to participate in this capitalist system. I'm not sure that berating people for not choosing 'nicer' capitalists is in any way genuinely radical. Most people don't know about this campaign, and indeed are unlikely to care that much. I'm an anarchist who happens to be vegan, and I don't really care (I'm a different poster to the one above with similar views to mine by the way). Not about AR campaigns in the way they are framed anyway. For a start they seem to deliberately go out of their way to alienate most people. A milieu in which it becomes acceptable to dig up someone's dead granny is going to be seen as somewhat fucked. Further to that I don't think 'animal rights' is a viable concept in itself either, at least in the way most AR activists put it.

"Relating to Barclays, this is a company that supports animal abuse inside HLS, contributes to environmental deforestation and provides huge loans to damming companies in Iceland, etc. Scratch just a little below the surface and you realise that this company is dirt and should not be supported in any way. Banks only help the rich, and Barclays wont make their money at my expense."

You've just invalidated your own argument. As it's a systemic problem and not Barclays making a choice to be nasty, which bank should I use, given they all help the rich (even the so called ethical ones)? Should we keep our wages in a shoebox under our beds?

"i agree that it is difficult to live completely parallel to capitalism, but you can purchase from ethical companies, and not buy into their consumer culture - share and reuse books and clothes, only take what you really need etc."

It is impossible to live outside of capitalism. Ethical companies are still capitalist.

"in most places there are multiple ATMs, so i'd hope this action would not inconveniece most innocent people"

Which people are not innocent? Are you referring to Barclays customers?
