SHAC Barclays Demo ~ Cov

SHAC Brum | 20.10.2008 09:49 | SHAC | Animal Liberation | Birmingham

Shac outreach :D

SHAC DEMO REPORT(COVENTRY):

Five of us started our shac outreach demo outside of barclays,an 1hr and half b4 they closed. We educated people, with our voices and banner, and got support from individuals that said they wud join the shac campaign and a little girl bringing us a cookie to show her support.People genuinely wanted to know the link between the two(Barclays & HLS) and were astonished at this.Barclays didn't like the fact we were there and were using pathetic excuses that our banner was "upsetting children".

We did have problems from the Barclays staff ,especially one,who threatened to beat up one of our activists.Asking us to wait till they close so he cud sort it out around the back. The manager was much more cordial, apart from the occasional("fuck off"),and just stood by us constantly. The police arrived, one copper on a bike, and told us that he recieved complaints that we threatened barclays staff! He wasn't seriously interested in the real threats we had recieved.

We educated both passersby and maybe even the Barclays staff who were unaware of this.We stayed until they closed.

Whatever happened to SHAC

20.10.2008 12:17

Is this what SHAC has come to, a pathetic little three person demo outside a Barclays branch ?

The current situation is just embarassing.

Numbers are falling for every demo, finance is drying up, key people are in prison.

We need a re-think

I'm just a little bit ashamed

The Action Against Barclays And HLS Gathers Pace

20.10.2008 13:39

The action against Barclays is picking up pace. We did our first demo last week and we will be doing it every week now. Many others are starting to do the same... all over the UK.
What happened to SHAC? Try opening your eyes next time you go past a Barclays Bank branch.

Common everyone join in, just knock up some leaflets on your PC.Then get some posters and Shac leaflets later on. Get down to your local branch and let the public know. Even half hour at lunch time is enough. It all adds up! Nobody can afford bad press these days, and customers moving their accounts elsewhere.

Stop moaning and just keep on fighting

OK some people clearly think SHAC is crap. My answer to that is simply that the animal rights activists who campaign against HLS have fought very hard and at great personal loss healthwise, financially and of course have paid for caring with their liberty. I am disgusted by the suggestion that those who have been involved in SHAC (numbering hundreds of good activists) are either worked themselves into the ground just for their egos or because they are part of some big state conspiracy. Whatever anyone thinks of SHAC (and constructive criticism and agreeing to differ are fine by me) the UK and US government have hounded down activists associated with SHAC because SHAC are EFFECTIVE. The police are cracking down on animal rights activists not because of the tactics used but because of the threats from the vivisection industry to vacate the UK unless ALL protest was curbed.
Animal rights activists have many demands sabbing, sanctuary work, fur shops ad infinitum, no animal rights activist has to go on SHAC demos or be involved in SHAC in any way so instead of sniping just get on with doing whatever YOU think needs doing.
By the way some of the best demos I have beens on are with a small number of people or just me by myself. You can make decisions quicker, be more approachable and if alone they cannot use section 14! No-one should feel that they cannot demonstrate with small numbers, at Hillgrove there was often only 1-3 of us SO WHAT!

I think all genuine AR activists are in favour of people who are out there for the SHAC campaign and support the work they do. I think the posts that have been appearing on indymedia come from one source only, the pro-viv loser known as SHACwatch!

SHACwatch posting

20.10.2008 15:54

Well I suppose its possible that SHACwatch people have been posting to Indymedia but trying to hide the facts about the large number of recent arrests is not the way to deal with the problem

Thanks you are right in all probability
To the other comment yes animal rights activists do know all about the arrests thanks and no-one is hiding anything. Interesting how out of the 6 known arrests last week 2 of the arrestees were accused of being informers earlier in the year, I suppose they grassed themselves up. So what exactly are we supposed to do eh? Run to the hills screaming or buckle down, support one another and do all in our power to stop animal abuse? Personally I prefer the latter, once I am over this awful flu bug!
Needless to say the prisoners need our support and the animals need us to keep going. For goodness sake 4 people are in that photo, good display, leaflets being given out and someone is nit picking. The fact that we are at liberty and at worst face prison (unlawfully we may face assault etc) where we will be fed and sheltered. None of us face torture, none of us will be burnt at the stake or crucified so even though people are in prison in large numbers there is no reason not to follow our consciences.
Every leaflet given out, every signature on a petition, every banner, every single activist is making a difference so ditch the negativity it helps no-one.
