Valitox Could End Animal Toxicology Tests

This sort of information is vital, because people often talk about using animal tests 'until we find better methods.' Valitox is better!
At the request of the Pro Anima committee, the NOVALEADS laboratory has developed VALITOX, a new toxicological test, and a technological breakthrough in cellular biology, able to predict reliably the toxicity of chemical substances intended for use on humans.
The predictive ability of VALITOX has now been established on over thirty different molecules thanks to financial support from the main French animal welfare associations: the SPA; 30 Million Friends; The BB Foundation; the SNDA and the Bourdon Association, coordinated by the Pro Anima’s scientific committee.
Professor Jean-François Narbonne has been responsible for the experimental work. Strong results have correlated well with the research objective: to demonstrate and verify the ability of cellular tests to predict toxic effects of chemical substances on human beings. In fact the results have been better than we had hoped:
• In practical terms the VALITOX test reliability is 86% compared with only 65% for tests on mice and 61% on rats;
• VALITOX is even more reliable that the battery of four cellular tests recommended by MEIC (Multicenter Evaluation of Invitro Citotoxicity) which achieves an 83% lvel of prediction. Furthermore VALITOX requires only a single line of human cells, short incubation time (24 hours) and short set-up time (20 minutes).
The VALITOX test is currently being evaluated by the AFSSA, under the test title CYTOX, in the context of the Programme Nationale Arcachon and its oyster cultivation subsidiary.
On completion of these trials VALITOX is due to be recommended for adoption under the European Directive REACH (REgistration and Authorization of CHemicals).
