Unseen Gaza, tonight on Channel-4

Mark | 22.01.2009 20:56 | Other Press | Palestine | Repression

Tonight (Thursday 22 January) at 11:05 PM, on Channel 4, a special edition of Dispatches "Unseen Gaza".
In this Dispatches special, Jon Snow examines the difficulties that news organisations around the world have faced in reporting the conflict in Gaza. Who is getting the true picture of events as they happen?

Taken from the Channel-4 news website:
 http://www.channel4.com/programmes/unseen-gaza/episode-guide/series-1/episode-3

Is what has been presented on our screens and in our papers a true reflection of events on the ground in Gaza? (doh! ...of course not!) And how do these reports differ to those aired in other countries?

With reporters unable to enter Gaza, attempted media manipulation from both sides and strict regulations governing what images that can be shown on British TV, Jon Snow asks a range of journalists from at home and abroad about the challenges of getting the full story.

Featuring images that haven't before been aired on mainstream television, Jon also examines the difference between the coverage at home and that in the US, Europe and the Middle East. He compares the coverage available on terrestrial channels with satellite TV and the internet and investigates the extent to which some British Muslims are by-passing the mainstream British media and looking elsewhere for their information.

To what extent does the choice of news outlet affect opinion of the conflict?

In Peering into the Conflict, Jon Snow speaks to Sky News reporter Dominic Waghorn about the difficulties of broadcasting live from a conflict zone when faced with so many restrictions.

Sieve Out the Propaganda touches upon the frustrations felt by international journalists, as Jon speaks to the Telegraph's Jerusalem correspondent, Tim Butcher.

for those that haven't tried it, just wanted to say that as far as uk mainstream news goes, i always find more4 news (freeview14 @8pm weekdays) tends to be about the best there is. there have been some very hard-hitting and truthful reports about gaza there.

eg, tonight was loads of stuff on israeli use of unlawful weaponry, plus film and pics of said weaponry passing through mildenhall and lakenheath on the way to the battlefront.

filming outside these US bases (on british soil), they were stopped and questioned by plod, and they made the point that while plod and US want to know what we're up to, we're not allowed to know what they're up to! now you'd never get that on the beeb - haha.

maybe worth capturing and distributing as DVDs

22.01.2009 22:29

I used to be able to capture digital TV in high quality on the computer and convert to DVD but my piss poor reception or something means I can no longer receive digital CH4 at all. If anyone else can cap this and it turns out to be worthwhile then do please consider turning into DVDs and distribute to people who need to be informed. Even better is to arrange public screenings from a DVD so the audience can then interact, discuss what they've seen and plan things to do such as boycotts, pickets, trash weapons factories etc.

the

presenter on the news at 7 made an Israeli goverment spokesman look like a complete hypocritical ass it was brilliant

the gaza truth program was a bit of a pet down to be honest it avoided gaza itself and concentrated on what people thought of the reporting

Yes it was about the reporting only rather than the war crimes.

But the reporting has been so shameful and it was good that Snow did emphasise how having all your news fed to you by just one government agency can only be a bad thing. The most interesting thing to me was when he questioned the BBC's head of news about how many complaints of bias the BBC had receieved about their reporting of the war and he admitted that the majority had complained that the reporting was too much PRO Israel. One always hears about those armies of zionists students monitoring all media sources all over the world and bombarding those media with complaints if they make any criticism at all about Israel. So in this case it seems that the bigots have been beaten by more clear thinking people. Well done to everyone who's complained about poor reporting. Keep it up though.
