Release Delshad Zorab and Grant Him Asylum Rights

South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group | 19.02.2009 19:53 | Anti-racism | Iraq | Migration | Sheffield

Doncaster resident and Kurdish communist, Delshad Zorab, has been detained at Campsfield Detention Centre. He fears deportation to Kurdistan where his life will be threatened. He's fought all his life against dictatorship, big business and bigotry. Now he needs you support.

On the morning of Friday February 13th Delshad Namiq Zorab was taken from his home in Doncaster to a police station and then to Campsfield Detention Centre near Oxford. Many people will have met Delshad: he has been an active campaigner for the right to asylum and was a good friend of Mohammad Hussain who sadly died last year. Now, locked in Campsfield Detention Centre, he fears that he will be forcibly deported to Iraqi Kurdistan where he has every reason to believe that his life would be in real danger. This is despite the fact that his appeal for asylum is still pending: Delshad should not – even under this Government’s asylum laws – be detained or deported.

Information about Delshad

Delshad Namiq Zorab is an active member of the UK Committee of the Worker Communist Party of Iraq (WCPI) and a member of The International Federation of Iraqi Refugees. The WCPI is a banned organisation in Iraq and Kurdistan. Its members both at home and abroad are persecuted by the Kurdish and Iraqi security forces. Delshad’s life is in danger if he is deported back to Iraqi Kurdistan.

Delshad was born in 1/7/1956 in the village of Sewsenan, Sulaimaniyah, into a politically active family. Both he and his family have been the regular victims of persecution for their political beliefs and activities; his brother Kamal was killed by Saddam Hussein’s Baath regime for being a member of the Iraqi Communist Party, 70 people from Delshad’s village, mainly family members and friends were killed in a chemical attack, similar to Halabja, by the Iraqi army on 22/3/1988.

Delshad has been involved in many demonstrations and meetings calling for the end to violence and war in Kurdistan and for equal rights of women and children against religious and nationalist organisations. As a result of this campaigning Delshad has been the target of persecution by the Kurdish nationalist parties – the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and by some Islamic groups. He was arrested and tortured on a several occasions by the Kurdish nationalist parties and by the Baathist Iraqi regime.

Delshad has lived in the UK since 2003. He has demonstrated with the South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group (SYMAAG) outside Lindholme Detention Centre in 2007 against the detention of those who had committed no crime. He spoke passionately on demonstrations in London and Newcastle for asylum seekers’ right to work and against deportations to Kurdistan. Just before he was detained he was helping to establish a scheme in Doncaster to help exchange asylum vouchers for cash. All his life Delshad has supported those people persecuted by dictatorship, big business and bigotry. Now he needs our support.

Today, from Campsfield Detention Centre, Delshad said “I want you to tell everyone ‘thank you’ for supporting me”.

Wikipedia sums up thus: "A bigot is a person who, without thought, is intolerant of opinions, lifestyles or identities differing from his or her own"

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but a communist - a subscriber to a system of living which has been demonstrated to have failed - 'fighting' against those who disagree with him and his idealism, is also bigot.

Of course, you will also consider me to be bigoted and you are free to do so. Under Communism, that freedom would probably not exist. The dictator who controlled the system of communism would dictate that anyone who disagreed with their ideals should be persecuted, to set an example of what happens to free thinkers want to upset the established order.

Stalin, Pol Pot, Mugabe and Kim Jong Ill are good examples for you to think about before making a cause célèbre out of someone who wants to 'fight' for communism. Besides, there is an excellent chance that Mr Zorab will quickly deport himself from wherever he's deported to. He'll probably be back here, fighting the good fight, quicker than you can say Jack Rabbit.

i think 'fight' will have been used figuratively rather than literally here.

what the hell are you talking about about Mr Zorab 'quickly deport[ing] himself'? states deport people. if what you mean that delshad is going to try to flee from his home country then i would agree. surely this is the reason that he tried to get asylum here in the first place? a good reason at that. i wouldn't count on him being able to come back here though - anyone with any experience of dealing with the draconian border apparatus that the UK is errecting will tell you that it is impossible to return once deported.

but maybe you think that anyone whose ideas you disagree with should be kicked out of the country? that goes beyond bigotry into the realms of fascism.

Posit, by the definition you're using every person on this planet with sentient thought is a bigot.

I don't know what particular communist current this unfortunate man subscribes to but there are plenty of libertarian communist movements that are resolutely founded upon the rejection of authority.

Claiming all communist parties are qualitatively the same is like saying all capitalist parties are qualitatively the same. They might be undesirable to you, but the statement is a gross simplification and patently untrue.

Yeah, and how exactly do you deport yourself? That’s a pretty clever party trick.

"anyone with any experience of dealing with the draconian border apparatus that the UK is errecting [sic] will tell you that it is impossible to return once deported."

That has to be the most naive thing I've read anywhere, ever.

Has anyone asked why Mr Zorab chose the UK over the dozen or so countries he passed through on his way here ? Apart from Iceland, it's about as far away from his point of origin as is possible to get and given the way the UK deals with people like Mr Zorab, if I were him, this is the last place I'd want to be granted asylum. Think chavs, knife crime, zero prospects, recession, racism ..

The phrase 'a politically active family' can be equally applied to the Bush family, the Hussein family, and - get this - the Thatcher family. The Toynbees, Millibands and the Benn family can also be described as politically active.

Some of them active for the common good, some are pariahs. Is there any evidence to suggest which sort Mr Zorab's family were ? No.

Independence of thought goes beyond being 'right on'
