A British National Party (BNP) member was attacked with a hammer when protesters arrived at a campaign event in Greater Manchester.

Violence broke out as 30 people surrounded a BNP vehicle outside the Ellesmere Pub in St Helens Road in Leigh on Friday evening.

Tony Ward, 48, was hit with a hammer and later treated in hospital.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, Greater Manchester Police said.

Officers arrived at the pub to discover the BNP's trailer had been overturned, said a police spokesman.

A traffic diversion was put in place on St Helen's Road, while the trailer was removed and the road was closed. It has since reopened.

One witness told BBC News: "They had hammers and they smacked the vehicle to pieces, smashed all the windows and tore off the bumper, completely decimated it.

"I was shocked at what I saw."

A BNP fundraising event had been due to take place at Pure nightclub in Leigh, but it was cancelled at the last minute.

Simon Darby, the party's deputy leader said: "This was a violent attack by a group of thugs in which one of our members was badly injured.

"But we will not be put off."

The BNP's Nick Griffin has been in the area to host the event, said Mr Darby.

saw 3 Nazi wankers in the town centre on Friday and wondered what was going on they don't normally show their ugly faces in the centre after a quick scout around no others where seen so looks like you got them in the end.

I can imagine that alot of students were saying that, but then alot of students are upper class tospots. I went to uni expecting to fid a hotbed of activism, but instead found apathy, sexism and reactionary views on an almost institutionalised scale. I also find that alot of students will say whatever will make them look edgy and contraversial in an attempt to look clever. When Nick Griffin visited my city, in the audience (of 8 people, in a park after being chased out of 2 pubs by local antifa) was 4 students who attended to protest our no platform stance and show how much they cared about 'freedom of speech' (After a quick chat, they revealed themselves as pseudo-intellectal liberals totally bereft of originality of thought). Alls im saying is don't let the views of the student population at large get you down, as those views are more often than not, poorly thought out shock garbage.

The people who did this violence to the BNP guy are clearly violent extremists - end of story.
There is nothing radical about them - they have personally positioned themselves as outcasts from any radical movement - lets be clear on this. If you want to be radical give yourself up and hand in you weapon - the hammer. That hammer was not a tool when it hit the guy on the head it was a weapon.

The person or persons involved in hitting a person has no approval for this act from me whatsoever, no support for there activism (sick word) and they ought to be clear that they have crossed a line and this is not worth emulating if you copy this you are also likely to become an extremist and as bad or worse than the nonviolent dodgy bnp people you oppose.

These hidden unaccountable/s attacked a person for his dodgy beliefs or being in a dead dodgy party (the bnp) - what is wrong with that really are peoples beliefs such a threat to you?

(A) Sab x, I completely agree with you about the apathy and sexism parts. People seem to belong in three camps... rich conservative wankers who couldn't get into Cambridge or LSE, general apolitical people who don't give a crap and want to indulge in capitalist pursuits, and SWP arse kissers who have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. Should have gone to university in Greece or something.

Black N Red, no I'm not a fascist troll. I fully support the no platform policy and would be grateful if someone dumped the BNP along with their supporters in the North Sea or something. It's just that this event is giving the open platform people another push, they're saying it's the leftists who cause problems and suppress free speech.

It'll probably die down with time after the media has finished sensationalising and generating sympathy for the fascist who got what he deserved. But in the mean time despite the no platform policy i'm still finding BNP propaganda in the SU, only so much you can rip up before it's replaced.

if others in their passivity join the BNP it might be due to lack of any real alternative radical politics that appear or appeal - it would be better to hang on and wait till something inspiring comes you way - aim not to use violence and you are likely to remain outside of being extremist (that is a good thing) and if you want to be radical aim for nonviolence as a force (that is also a good thing) .

Resist the first thing that comes up for better options - think for yourselves and adapt up - dont react.

Transformative anarchy is a wonderful thing.

If you want to live in a fictional fairy tale where every student is a radical leftist then so be it, I wont give people a heads up that right wing extremists are once against trying to infiltrate student politics and you can continue with your laptop activism. However I think it's important that these sort of things are made public, if we ignore it and the fascists continue to fester they'll pollute the minds of young people. Thus it needs to be in the open that they're once again on campus, and something needs to be done about it.

In the last couple of weeks i've seen BNP leaflets and stickers in dotted around the uni, obviously left there with the intent of converting students. Whilst I ripped them up when I found them, there's only so much I can do in that respect. I have no idea who's leaving them there, and when i rip them up they just replace them.
