Request from Climate Camp’s Legal Support Team

At the last climate camp it was difficult to track down video footage for the lawyers/arrestees; the hope that a central database would come together did not come together as well as we would have liked.
If you know you have something obviously relevant to an arrest, or injury, or an obvious abuse of police powers then it would be good to draw it to our attention by emailing legal[at]climatecamp.org.uk. We are requesting all witness statements come to legal[at]climatecamp.org.uk with the date, time and location in the subject heading for ease of later reference.
In terms of what we would be interested that might otherwise not get covered but would help with future campaigning:
- we would be particularly interested in footage of portable police security (metal detector) ‘arches’ being used for searches without the usual search formalities of s2 PACE information (officers’ name, search power, availability of search form) and search forms – there is a difference of opinion as to whether such arches are searches
- some really good footage showing the usual lack of police epaulet/shoulder numbers, eg. police kettle, walk around showing the entire circle of police officers and their absence of numbers and then their explanations for their lack
We need to produce a training film for legal observers so footage showing them at work (calling in arrests, involved with searches, recording near police lines etc is helpful and general footage of searches is useful).
It would probably be really helpful if there was (ideally) one place where all footage was uploaded with tags that include date, time and location as that is the easiest and quickest and most reliable way for lawyers and protesters in this context to search for relevant material.

So unless you've come up with a way of providing such a facility that is public knowledge AND secure, then quite frankly this is a bonkers suggestion.
Any serious media activist or protestor with camera should take responsibility for what they shoot. I can't help but think what is described is really like some honey pot for the police. Isn't that what happened after Genoa with the police seizing the Indymedia Italy complete video archive?
I would personally offer my footage if it would help someone prove their innocence, but I would only hand it to a lawyer that I trusted, or that I could verify was working for the client. If I hand over footage then I am prepared to stand up in court and say, yes it was me that shot this footage and this is what happened. I certainly wouldn't offer my material to be put into a general tagged database. Yuk.
That's not the solution - the solution is better outreach to people with cameras, and a stronger sense of solidarity after the rushes or adrenalin have subsided.
However if there's some well thought out water tight system solution I'd certainly listen to what is proposed, but I'm somewhat sceptical.

Maybe what might work is people who might have any potentially relevant stuff emailing legal so that we can put a shout out later for specific stuff we are looking for later.
It is not always obvious at the time what is relevant, so relying on people coming to us is not enough.
The problem is this - when we made specific requests after last year's camp for footage we got no responses. So we did not know if the problem was the message was not being read by the right people or there just was no relevant footage.
Don't really mind what the solution is as some thought is given to how it might be solved.
Perhaps anyone with a possible solution and a way of getting in touch with relevant people might contact the legal email address?

People do upload they footage but getting in touch with them to request original or higher quality footage for defense purposes has always been really difficult. This is something that remains to be resolved. Ideas welcomed.
