Witnesses to the death of a man during yesterday’s G20 protests in the City of London have called for an official inquiry into the incident after seeing what they believe was a murder on the streets of London.

Ian Tomlinson, 47, was apparently on his way home from work as a newsagent, and allegedly collapsed and suffered a heart attack during the protest.

The allegations were made after the widow of the man today lead a march for her partner who she said “died for the crimes of capitalism.”

One female witness who wished to remain anonymous talked of “police brutality and heartlessness” and directly implicated members of the police force in the “murder” of the protester who, in tributes left outside the Royal Exchange in the city, was described as a “hero.”

She spoke of the “unwarranted” attack made by “masked policemen in riot gear.” After being struck in the head by a police baton she said the man was then bloodied and left unconscious on the street.

Ian Tomlinson collapsed in St Michael's Alley close to the junction of Birchin Lane and Cornhill at 7.30pm.

She said the police had formed an “animal pen” around the protesters to contain what was slowly becoming a heated encounter.

In a statement made on behalf of the dead man's wife, witnesses were urged to come forward and give statements to expose “the failures of both the police and members of the media in the accurate reporting of yesterdays incident.”

Footnote:
It is the wishes of Ian's wife to declare that she has not accused the police of murdering him.

widow rips down memorial messages

04.04.2009 12:20

The Sun has a picture of a women who they claim is the man's widow, ripping down the messages at the Bank of England, apparently angered by the suggestion he was a protester. This would totally contradict the article from salfordonline.

Can someone confirm either of the two versions? Seems like at least one of them is made up.

Well obviously The Bum is right, as always in such matters.

"She was with plain-clothes police officers and they helped her clear it all away."

I'll bet they did. Why plain clothes?
Hmmm

Oi!

“But she was furious and yelled, ‘He was my husband, he wasn’t a protester’Sun

says. This case needs highlighting & the truth of the matter, but if true& it needs needs verifying she wont get my supportor calls for compensation, other family members & friends yes,but not with comments like that. It could have been any good person hacked off with bankers on the way home, or anyone hemmed in the pen. Anyone can become a protester, she will no doubt be being fed corporate media & police lies or we arent bribing you, but if you say this madam....
No wonder less paper sales go on & people dont believe what the media are allowed to tell us on the "news"

Well she won't win many support at this rate.

I bet the Police were none too happy to help her remove them.

Well she won't win many support at this rate.

Her husband has just died! Give her a break - leave her alone. Your articles have constantly tried to twist this into a story of a 'dead protestor' and are now just sore that it isn't going your way.

I haven't seen her wedding certificate.

04.04.2009 22:09

And was the plain clothes police officer an actual police officer ?

beware

What contradiction ?

05.04.2009 00:29

I don't see any contradiction - surely it is possible that the guy's wife doesn't like him being characterised as an actvist, but still wants witnesses to come forward ?

Besides, if anything, it could be a stronger case in the public mind - the accusation that *even an innocent passer-by* could be caught up in police brutaiity and killed...so don't paint him as an activist - let it be said that he was an ordinary newsagent, somebody the general public can empathise with.
