Spoof stickers against rising fares on Leeds Buses.

Pest Control | 06.05.2009 15:46 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Social Struggles | Sheffield

Those pests have struck again.

After their spoof of the local paper was so well received the people behind the Yorkshire Evening Pest have responded to yet another rise in the fares on First buses by producing stickers which helpfully inform passengers of both the rise in prices and what the company really thinks of them.

As prices went up on the 26th April, bus stops around Leeds were stickered with the legend:
“From the 26th April there will be some changes to most fares on First services in West Yorkshire.

We appreciate fare rises are never popular, especially at a time when the economic crisis is causing deflation and our costs are actually falling. But, really, what are you going to do about it?

Leeds: Like it, Lump it?”

Lets hope this is just an opening salvo which sparks a more sustained attack against rising fares. At a time of hardship a rise in fares is immoral. At a time of climate crisis, a rise in fares is insane. Well we are mad as hell and we ain’t gonna take it anymore.

Fare strike anyone?

Great use of the word pest

Well reclaimed! We should all be pests to the state and its capital!

Brilliant!

Nice small doable thing to pull off. We should be doing things like this around the country to agitate about price hikes and suchlike.

Great - hopefully all 4 of your withheld bus fares will spur change in the company. Don't you have some bongos to drum?

Bus driver

Previous poster, you can't be a bus driver.

As a passenger on first buses in Leeds I can confirm that the above poster is very unlikely to be a Leeds bus driver as the the tone of the message is nowhere near rude, aggressive and cynical enough to be authentic.

Oh dear

07.05.2009 09:35

Oh dear. So someone is stupid enough to think all those that are pissed off about the constant massive fare increases in First busses fares are bongo playing hippies?! Not only that but they are no doubt posing as a bus driver, when in fact they are more likely a disgruntled, cynical ex-activist/politico or maybe just some reactionary Daily Mail reading fuckwit! I doubt anyone thinks that withholding a few fares here and there will put pressure on the company to stop increasing fares, but i don't think these stickers are claiming that are they? You seem happy enough for the train and bus fares to carry on going up, have you got shares in the company or something?

I can't even change a fiver never mind society although I once did wait for an elderly man to sit down before I set off and have on occasions not been rude to non English speakers who are struggling to work out fares etc.

Well done 'pests' on another great action!

I have recently written a short piece about First Leeds cutting back on staff and services in the city. You can can read it here.

I would particularly advised that the 'Bus Driver' above takes a look - he may be striking sooner than he thinks!
