Opinion polls reveal British public view on immigration

No axe to grind - just facts for a change on this issue | 24.07.2009 10:32 | Migration

New immigration polls find nearly 80% of the British public, even in his own constituency, think the Home Secretary is ‘out of touch’

70% of Labour voters in Britain want a sharp cut in immigration
78% of voters in Alan Johnson’s own area

New opinion polls, published today, show the Home Secretary is clearly out of touch with the public. Last week Alan Johnson told a House of Commons Committee that ‘he does not lie awake at night’ worrying that the population of the UK will reach 70 million and that he would not put a cap on the number of immigrants settling in the UK.

A YouGov opinion poll, conducted shortly afterwards shows that his views are completely at odds with the vast majority of the population:

- 81% are worried (45% of which are ‘very worried’) about the prospect of a population of 70 million in 2028. - 78% say that Alan Johnson is out of touch with people like them.
- 76% want to see net immigration cut from its present level of 237,000 a year to 50,000 or less a year. Of that 76%, 32% want to see a policy of “one in, one out” while 22% want to see no immigration at all.
The party affiliations are also of interest:

- 90% of Conservative voters are worried (55% very worried) about a population of 70 million. For Labour voters it was 70% worried (29% very worried). Lib Dems were higher at 76% (38% very worried).
- 65% of Labour voters think he is out of touch with them, as do 71% of Lib Dems and 90% of Conservatives.
- A sharp cut in immigration (to 50,000 a year or less) was supported by 85% of Conservative, 70% of Labour[1] and 65% of Lib Dem voters.
The ORB poll of voters in Alan Johnson’s own constituency found that:

- 80% of voters thought that Alan Johnson was “out of touch” on immigration
- 85% were concerned that 7 million of the 10 million increase will be as a result of immigration
- 83% want to see net immigration reduced to 50,000 a year or less
- 80% of voters thought that immigration is putting too much strain on public services.
- 78% of voters opposed his general attitude to immigration and population
- 73% are concerned that Britain is losing its own identity and culture
- 69% of voters were concerned that, over the next 20 years or so, the population of the UK will rise by more than 10 million, from 61 million today to over 70 million.
Mr Johnson’s approach to immigration, and his policy, has little support among Labour voters in his constituency. Of his constituents who said that they would vote Labour at the next election:

- 63% were concerned that 7 million of the 10 million increase will be as a result of immigration
- 56% of potential Labour voters thought that Alan Johnson was “out of touch” on immigration
- 58% of potential Labour voters opposed his general attitude to immigration and population.

Comments from those asked included

‘This is not just about a “cap” on immigration. It is about the future of our country.

‘Failure to cut immigration back to the level of the early nineties will result in our population going to 70 then 80 million and beyond as immigration is the main driver of population growth.

‘In many parts of Britain the public are seething with resentment at the total failure of the political class to take seriously their deep concerns about the impact of immigration on the future of our country,’

NOTE
All figures for the national poll, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 1,956 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 16th - 17th July 2009. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).

All figures for the poll conducted in Alan Johnson’s constituency are from ORB. The results are from a telephone survey of 1,026 constituents living in West Hull & Hessle. Fieldwork was conducted 17th to 21st July (inc). Interviews were conducted with adults aged 18+ who confirmed that they lived in one of Hull West & Hessle’s seven wards. Data are weighted to the adult profile of Hull West & Hessle by age, gender, working status and ward.

Notes:
[1] Of those intending to vote Labour, 70% wanted to see net immigration reduced below 50,000 a year, made up of 27% who wanted to see less than 50,000 a year, 29% who wished to seee ‘one in, one out’ and 14% who wanted no immigration at all. Only 7% wanted 200,000 and another 7% 300,000 or more.

where people get info to base their views...

24.07.2009 11:09

If you look at the comments on daily mail, telegraph and standard on immigration stories, it makes me wonder how much real facts people base their opinions on. Yes it is a 'fact' that an opinion poll returns these results. But the info upon which people base these opinions is often distorted by the media or plain lies ('immigrants eat royal swans' type nonsense). And that's where we have to challenge and engage with people, not just say they're ignorant.

So it's not enough to just post up opinion poll stats on indymedia as a sort of 'there you go, people don't want immigration'. We KNOW that, what we want to discuss is WHY people have these views, what their views are based upon and how we challenge them. Regurgitating an opinion poll (and having been on the receiving end of a few i know they are flawed as whenever my views didn't fit in the box it was put down as 'other') doesn't really get us anywhere on the issues of migration and how we as people interested in positive social and ecological change move things on. 'no axe to grind', but not much to offer either, I'm afraid.

wonder?

Ignorant and mis-informed

24.07.2009 11:12

"70% of Labour voters in Britain want a sharp cut in immigration" you say.
70% of Labour voters know almost nothing about immigration, the reality of how cases (the tiny number that even get as far as being looked at, that is) are arbitrarily dismissed and the causes of immigration. It isn't just that they don't want to know. It's not just that they are lazy and happy to believe whatever someone else tells them to think. It's also that the Labour government has wilfully encouraged xenophobia in order to be able to bring in new laws and further their own agenda. 70% of Labour voters have swallowed the hype.

I suggest that those 70% pop over the channel right now and talk to the people in Calais, living in fear of being deported back to Afghanistan and the Taliban that await them. The Taliban installed in power by our dear friends, the U.S.

Proof if we needed it

One more example of how the majority view simply can't be trusted or used on important matters like this. The plain and simply fact is that most people are simply not politicaly educated enough to be trusted with this sort of choice. It is up to the better educated, the better informed, the more political to make these choices for them. Look how much better Cuba is (post revolution) by having a politicaly educated ruling representitive council to make these choices, if Cuba was left to the "people" to run then we would have had another corrupt US run agency country in the region.

100% of the British public fear Daleks

24.07.2009 12:09

At some point in our lives we've all been afraid of daleks. In the 1970's this led to mass hysteria and the phenonomen of terrified Britons hiding behind sofas for protection whenever daleks appeared. Evil aliens specifically targetting the UK is a deep-rooted fear which only evaporates once you realise that the threat is fictional.

They claim their planet's dying:
that soon it's going to blow
And so they're coming here - they say
they've nowhere else to go....
With their strange computer voices
and their one eye on a pole
They're moving in next door and then
they're signing on the dole.....

Asylum seeking Daleks
are landing here at noon!
Why can't we simply send them back
or stick them on the moon?
It says here in the Daily Mail
they're coming here to stay -
The Loony Lefties let them in!
The middle class will pay......

They say that they're all pacifists:
that doesn't wash with me!
The last time I saw one I hid
Weeks behind the settee...
Good Lord - they're pink. With purple bumps!
There's photos of them here!
Not just extra-terrestial....
The bloody things are queer!

Yes! Homosexual Daleks
And they're sponging off the State!
With huge Arts Council grants
to teach delinquents how to skate!
It's all here in the paper -
I'd better tell the wife!
For soon they will EXTERMINATE
Our British way of life.....

This satire on crass ignorance
and tabloid-fostered fear
Is at an end. Now let me give
One message, loud and clear.
Golf course, shop floor or BNP:
Smash bigotry and hate!
Asylum seekers - welcome here.
You racists: emigrate!

The Cappuccino Slurpers know best

Nobody has right to an opinion in this matter unless they are of the far left, read the guardian or regularly sip piping hot lattes in trendy alternative coffee shops. As citizens of the UK, everyone else is stupid and ill informed and has no right to any opinions in how their country is run and their taxes are spent.

What?

24.07.2009 12:43

'It is up to the better educated, the better informed, the more political to make these choices for them'

What patronising wank. Why not just install a dictator instead? Your dismissal of ordinary people's beliefs and perceptions as 'false consciousness' simply because they happen to differ from your own, reveals an underlying assumption of 'superiority' which really has no place in any form of progressive politics. So to 'dehumanise' immigrants is wrong but to do the same to ordinary people who express opinions with which you disagree is OK in your book is it? Arrogant, judgemental crap - an attitude which has led to many of the social problems you claim you wish to alleviate. I only hope you were being ironic.

My despair cuts both ways

No irony intended

24.07.2009 13:04

No I was not being ironic.

I see nothing wrong in recognising that the broader population has a poor political education in this country and that some decisions should be made by those who more fully understand the bigger picture. I return to the point I made about Cuba, a country with a strong medical support system, superb arts, universal education (of all kinds) all under the control of the Communist Party why would you not want that for Britain ?

Democracy is a flawed and inneficient method for running a country, a political grouping while Cuba is constitutionally defined as a "socialist state guided by the principles of José Martí, and the political ideas of Marx, Engels and Lenin." The present Constitution also ascribes the role of the Communist Party of Cuba to be the "leading force of society and of the state." why not the same for us ?

I suggest YOU educate yourself more in a political sense before posting again and displaying your ignorance of the Class Struggle

Not "the man in the street"

bit of an error

24.07.2009 13:31

You are assuming that the ~80% figure comprises of the uneducated people. I'm guessing you are assuming because you have certainly given no facts on the subject.

This is most likely wrong. You will find it is more likely that the 20% who are not worried about immigration are uneducated. This is also an assumption, but is much more likely to be true since we already can prove that people who are apathetic are more likely to be of lower intelligence.

versity

Gotta love the stats

24.07.2009 13:50

we're talking 80% of 1, 956 people here.

Which is 80% of fuck all.

Or 80% of the miserable fuckers who actually spend an amount of time filling in these opinion polls.

Damn Buster

Not ironic

24.07.2009 14:34

At first I wasn't positive but we have confirmation.

That is a RESPECTABLE position with a long tradition behind it (whether or not you agree with it). Possible to document the debate in Western Civ as far back as Plato vs Aristotle. He is taking the Plato side of the debate.

I respect his honesty. All too many who feel there is something wrong with the decisions of "the people" and persist in trying to come up with excuses are just unwilling to admit that they don't REALLY believe in "democracy". In other words, they have some fanciful notion that the decisions resulting from true democracy will always be good, just, wise, far sighted, etc. etc. Sorry, but that is NOT what democracy is all about. Democracy, when working properly is just about making the decisions that "the people" want for good or ill -- nobody to blame for the results than themselves.

logic discipitation

24.07.2009 14:39

FYI: A poll of 2,000 is actually quite large.

You didn't really finalise your point. Just kind of left it hanging unfinished.
Probably because you knew if you wrote something like this.......

"If they did a larger poll, then the landslide figure of 80% would be guaranteed to be significantly lower."

........You would get laughed at.
