Dare to Examine Israel - blood libel or organ harvesting

Danny | 23.08.2009 20:12 | Other Press | Palestine

The Israeli hasbara is in overdrive condemning a mainstream Swedish newspaper (aftonbladet.se) report titled "Dare to examine Israel". The report asked Israel to refute Palestinian claims that victims of Israeli aggression have had their organs harvested for transplant before their corpses were returned. This is regarded as a 'blood libel' ('The Jews killed the child to drink his blood') typical of Czarist Russia.

I'd advise everyone not to jump into this heated issue simply because it is so hard to establish fact from fiction. However, regardless of the veracity of the claims, the way the Israeli media and state have reacted in unison is worth commenting upon.

The story is based upon claims that Palestinian corpses killed by the IDF are regularly returned missing organs which are used for Israeli transplants. This may be propaganda, perhaps based upon the fact that New Jersey Rabbis were recently arrested for organ harvesting, perhaps based upon the fact that every state regularly returns corpses to families missing organs after post-mortems. The obvious Israeli disdain for Palestinian lives shown in Gaza this year does lend strength if not plausibility to the claims though, especially since the same practice has been shown in Chinese criminal executions, and the Swedish newspaper did no more than ask for an Israeli investigation.

The Israeli reaction has been to call for a boycott of Swedish goods such as Ikea. For good measure they have also called for a boycott of Norway, presumably since Norwegian doctors were witnesses to the recent Gazan holocaust. This reaction is what is worth commenting upon, since a recent European Court of Human Rights ruling was that boycotts of Israel by Europeans are illegal. The same rules should apply. Why should Israel be allowed to boycott peaceful European countries over a newpaper article without our citizens being allowed to boycott them over a genuine mass-slaughter?

Arabs ask for EU support on Israel nuke resolution

Arab League chief Moussa urges EU president Sweden to support resolution slamming Israel's nuclear secrecy

(source: Ynetnews, 14 August 2009)

Arab states are lobbying the European Union to support their drive to force Israel to open up its secretive nuclear program to international perusal.

The Arab initiative is reflected in documents seen by the AP.

One is a letter to Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt from Amr Moussa, secretary general of the 22-nation League of Arab States. He urges Bildt to back an Arab resolution critical of Israel's nuclear secrecy.

The resolution is to be submitted for a vote at next month's general assembly of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Sweden currently holds the EU's rotating presidency.

Diplomats from EU member countries and from other nations accredited to the IAEA said Thursday that the same letter was sent to the other 26 EU member countries.

Distraction

24.08.2009 23:02

This article offers an interesting perspective on the controversy, basically saying that the article in the Swedish paper is a distraction from more serious problems related to Israel and its army.

"The aim to achieve broad media diffusion usually overshadows discernment and sound judgment, and especially the realization that this kind of article, which strikes the nerve of human fears of the danger of being violated and of becoming a 'commodity', in a way that accompanies and follows racist feelings, at the end of the day only adds fuel to the Israeli publicity machine, especially that the poor intelligence of the writer and the undeniable opportunism of the editors has driven them to link the report about removing the organs of Palestinians who have been killed to another issue, one whose main protagonist is Jewish American, which has flung the gates wide open for the Israeli government to level its favorite accusations against those who do not favor its policies towards the Palestinians."

Right on target.
