From Monday 28 September to 2 October 2009 the 30,000 students at Leeds University Union are being encouraged to get involved with 30,000 Ways – five days of interactive workshops, debate, film, comedy and action: an innovative and inspiring alternative to the traditional Freshers’ Week.

James Robertson, campaigns and democracy support manager at LUU, said, “students have been an important part of every social movement in history and this generation should be no exception.”

30,000 Ways at Leeds University Union (LUU) follows on from last year’s first-ever LUU Social Forum (September 2008), which was aimed at helping students who want to change the world for the better come together, with the slogan: “Keep Your Coins, I Want Change”.

Each day, 30,000 Ways will focus on one of five different themes: Monday explores issues directly affecting students, with a debate on the controversial new points-based immigration system with UKIP General Secretary Jonathan Arnott, and talks such as ‘Where’s My 3K Going?’

Tuesday looks at the environment, with workshops on Copenhagen and a debate on what to expect from ‘the most important meeting in history’ and the Age of Stupid film showing.

Wednesday is about sport, with the chance to play football, basketball and dodgeball with a fun and interesting twist and a Fink Club debate on security and liberty.

Culture is at the heart of Thursday’s events, with a live performance by award-winning political comedian Robin Ince.

And the week concludes with Friday’s day of action – an alternative tour of Leeds, guerilla gardening and introduction to non-violent direct action, followed by the 30,000 Ways closing Party.
