Edinburgh Anti-fascists call on bars to ban bigots

Jonb | 10.01.2010 12:22 | Anti-racism | Social Struggles

Pubs and bars in the centre of Edinburgh are being called upon by anti-fascist campaigners to ban the bigoted "Scottish" Defence League, before their racist demonstration on the 20th of February.

At previous events, the SDL and its parent organisation the English Defence League, have met in pubs to get drunk before their racist demonstrations. As such the Edinburgh Anti-Fascist Alliance have contacted over a hundred Edinburgh pubs, asking them to ban the SDL from their establishments, and to report any meetings of the SDL to the police.

A spokesperson for Edinburgh Anti-Fascist Alliance said: "We are sure that Edinburgh pubs are welcoming to anyone of any ethnic or religious background, so we thought it best to warn them that the racist SDL might take advantage of their hospitality on the 20th of February."

The SDL are an offshoot of the English Defence League, and have strong links to racist and fascist organisations including the National Front, and the British National Party. They often make Nazi salutes at their demonstrations, and chant racist slogans.

A spokesperson said: "We are a group of local people who are opposing the Scottish Defence Leagues demonstration planned for Edinburgh on the 20th February. We urge everyone who hates racism and fascism to join with us in opposing the SDL."

An annoyed spokesman for the SDL is reported in the Sunday Herald as saying: “Who are the fascists, telling people they can’t go into a public house? On what basis can you ban a group of people from going into a pub? These pubs are scared of these people, who come up and smash them up if they are not intimidated enough to close. No matter what happens we’ll be there in Edinburgh.”

Dozens of pubs have already agreed to ban the racist SDL, however Whetherspoons are tacitly supporting them, saying that they wont stop the SDL meeting in their pub. Their press spokesman said in the Sunday Herald today, "What anti-fascists think is right, corporations don’t".

Boycott Weatherspoons

10.01.2010 17:57

"A spokesman for Wetherspoons said they would allow anyone in, as long as there was no trouble. He said: “You can’t stop someone coming in because of their views – you’d have empty pubs. Where would you stop? What anti-fascists think is right, corporations don’t. Like any right-minded people, we don’t agree with the EDL or the SDL. But if their supporters come to our pub and don’t cause trouble, we won’t turn them away. If they misbehave, we will ask them to leave.”"
I don't think Weatherspoons understand what an E/SDL demo looks like. If they let them in they would have trouble putting them out again with the hundreds of cops and antis outside what would be in effect a temporary fash pub. Fash pubs played an important roll in the battle for control of territory between fascists and the working class in the run-up to the Nazi seizure of power.

Definitely boycott - and Yates as well. However, Wetherspoons are a bit shy on putting out their details but those of you who are on facebook and twitter can let them know...

Or maybe contact CLIC Sargent to complain about their sponsor's dubious support of fascists.

But if you want a more personal experience their contact page is at

Oh, and Lloyds No1 is part of them.

Doesn't really fit, does it?

"original, first hand reports on actions and other events"

So, a press release from an anti-fascist organisation (plus a couple of interesting quotations from a newspaper added) doesnt count?
