Weekly Peace Vigils In Luton Against Afhgan War

Luton Peace & Justice | 11.01.2010 13:40

Luton peace campaigners to hold weekly viigls against the war in Afghanistan to show there is a widespread opposition in Luton, beyond the half dozen Muslim protestors currently on trial.

From Saturday 23rd January there will be a weekly Peace Vigil from 2pm to be held near the Luton War memorial next to the Luton Town Hall.

We hope to open the eyes of those who call our troops Heroes and show them just what soldiers do in Afghanistan - kill, rape and injure!

We will distribute leaflets showing the devastation in Afghanistan caused by coalition forces, with pictures of dead women, men, children and babies.

To reinforce the point that the work of soldiers (Afghan or Coalition) is to kill and injure therefore it is wrong to call such people - Heroes!
They are anything but.

Peace with Justice,

More state trolling?

11.01.2010 13:53

This stuff is so transparent...

Sheesh...

Sheesh!?

11.01.2010 14:08

Er - state trolling!??

How far off the ball can you get?

This is a geniune effort by ordinary folk in Luton to pour attention on the realities of war in Afghanistan - hardly a pro-state activity eh?

...for having the 'audacity' to be remembering the dead women, men, children and babies in the state Afghanistan.

I'm glad it is not just the members of Islam4UK that want to protest this - although it does not surprise me in any way that Muslims would want to protest other Muslims being murdered.

Just for the record

11.01.2010 15:35

.. we're not supporters or sympathisers of Al Qaeda or Taliban!

We're a mixed bunch who mourn the deaths of all those killed in this war -
British Troops, US Troops other Coalition troops, Afghan soldiers and the Afghan civilians.

We laid a wreath of white poppies on the Luton War Memorial on remembrance day to remember all those who had fallen in all wars as part of the 'official' remembrance ceremonials.

We support those who are tring to bring peace to Afghanistan using non-violent methods, we're not interested in any fundamentalists groups whether religious or political.

We campaign for the abolition of all war.

Peace with justice

Just heard the Muslim protesters in Luton got found guilty

12.01.2010 01:20

I honestly thought they would easily get off. The message they were bringing was certainly unpopular with some people, but so what? As much as I dislike religions, we really are turning into a police state.

They should definitely appeal, I can't believe they can't get off this charge.

Protect all life: Mourn all death; Resist all war

12.01.2010 07:28

As a member of Luton Peace & Justice, I 100% support and plan to participate in vigils commemorating all the dead, and calling for an end to war. It is tragic that our young soldiers' lives are being lost in Afghanistan and I feel for their families. It is also tragic that Afghan lives, mainly civilian, are being lost - but our media don't report this. Neither do they say what this bizarre war is really about.

It is very worrying that the 5 Muslim men in Luton have been found guilty of public order offences when they had police permission to be there, no-one stopped them on the day, and they were standing obediently behind their placards. They were vocal but offered no violence to anyone; they behaved very well considering they were protesting about atrocities committed against their own people, possibly their own relatives, in other countries. Were charges brought against the man seen on video trying to assault them? Were charges brought against the other man seen on video making a fascist salute?

It is time we woke up to the fact that our media are totally biased and that freedom of speech is rapidly going out of the window. Human rights are for all of us: black/white; female/male; young/old; secular/religious, etc. We urgently need to protect our human rights. If we don't, freedom and democracy will die - they are already on the decline.

War=Murder

12.01.2010 12:54

I agree. I do not respect the opinion of Carolyn Mellanby that saying soldiers are murderers is abusive and insulting. War IS murder by another name. If some people believe that, and the war in Afghanistan is carried out by the British Army then it is logical for them to say that. Who else is it that is carrying out the acts of war? Personally I would prefer to focus on the responsibility of the elected Government or the voters who have, unfortunately, continued voting to put the army in Afghanistan, but that is just my view.

I agree that the real reason for this war is not reported. There seems no GOOD reason for it anyway.

It seems to me that freedom to demonstrate in a public place should be respected - whether that is at Parliament Square, outside a military base, at Wootten Bassett or on the streets of the towns where we live.
