Free Benefit Gig for Haiti Earthquake Victims - Taunton 28/01

Anonymous Promotions | 17.01.2010 15:11 | Culture | Health | Social Struggles | South Coast | World

We recently found out how Shelter spend their money and treat their staff so we're now donating the proceeds of the gig to Doctors Without Borders, to sopport their ugent work with the Haiti earthquke victims. Don't worry though we will still do a benefit for a homelessness charity sometime soon.

Good choice

17.01.2010 15:46

I might actually come to this if it's for MSF.

Can I ask for a favor though. too often these fund raisers are completely devoid of the cause, they are just parties, I think those could do with a touch more politics. maybe some film or talk or workshops or whatever, at least some decent amount of leaflets kicking about.

MSF are brilliant, there is loads to show for, not just from Haiti, but from the whole world.

Totally agree, MSF are a good charity to donate to.

But:-

As much as I would like to think think this approach would work, in my experience it doesn't. Having put on punk benefit gigs all I can say is most people don't give a fuck and have come for a party. I put on films in a separate room once at a punk night and had several lifestyle punks telling me that they 'did not like being preached to'. I reminded them that there were other rooms with music they could go to but they just wanted somewhere to sit and drink. I felt quite angry at their ignorant reaction but considering the poor turn out afterwards I thought fuck it, let's just put loud money-making parties on and fuck the politics.

A good approach is to have good parties at the weekend to raise money and then have separate film/discussion nights with really good food.

Punk and Politics

17.01.2010 16:25

I agree that integrating the politics with the punk party is important, and think that if they are totally separate events you will never reach out to those who aren't already involved with the political side.
But why not just do some tabling there? People might float over and have a look, but it's not at all imposing. Also, it's up to us more politically minded people to make sure that the politics is boring or preachy, but is relevant and makes people actually care.

Got this covered

17.01.2010 17:09

There will be a table by Last Hours with lots of anarchist orientated literature shared with tasty vegan food to try and get people looking into politics who wouldn't usually.

Thanks for the comments/advise on the matter.
