Please be more specific about such things

This post is very unclear and can be misleading. The link only points to the Forum section on Athens Indymedia, not the main news section.

It refers to an incident a few days ago, when a right-wing militant group attacked a gathering, organized by a citizens committee, protesting against government policies. It was not related to Anarchists. It does not have much to do with the Golden Dawn either, which is the "well-known" fascist group, active in Greece. These creatures call themselves "Autonomous Nationalists" and they are yet another fascist militant group.

They attacked the citizen gathering, injured three women, one of them over 50 years old, and were then chased away by the citizens, and were interestingly arrested by the Greek police. The Greek police never arrests fascists unless a very serious crime has occurred (nothing less than murder, usually), which is why this event is notable. It is speculated that they were arrested because they are former Golden Dawn members who broke off the organization and came together as "autonomous", something which the Greek government does not like as it does not know who they are and does not have direct control over them. The Golden Dawn members willingly submit all their personal information to be passed on to the state and law enforcement, who actually "employs" them, unofficially, to carry out attacks against leftists and anarchists.

However, despite their violent attack, use of weapons, and covered faces, the autonomous fascist attackers were initially only charged with "breach of the peace". A prosecutor has now suggested they apply more serious charges, but this remains to be seen.

The political party mentioned, LAOS, stands for LAikos Orthodoxos Synagermos, which translates to "People's Orthodox Alarm", and are open supporters of Nationalist Socialism, exactly what the Nazis were. Their name implies their deeply religious conservatism, which aims to gain them supporters from deeply religious rural areas of Greece. Their affiliation with all kinds of violent attacks and militant fascist groups is no secret. It is the party that the Golden Dawn openly supports since it has stopped running on elections itself. Golden Dawn, for the ones who didn't know, used to also be a political party, but they have now withdrawn from official politics and only engage in violent attacks, mostly against immigrants but also leftists and anarchists. There is mutual support between LAOS and other fascist organizations. In this case, one member of LAOS has voiced his support for the 44 people arrested for the latest fascist attack. This is hardly surprising. It would be more surprising if LAOS members had not voiced their support of the group.

Of course, tactfully, the LAOS member in question has not voiced his support of the attack, but condemned the arrest of "innocent patriots" who were violently attacked by "anarchists". Propaganda is widely used by the state and the far-right in an attempt to save their face while blaming everything on anarchists, leftists and immigrants.

It is vital to not believe a word you are reading from state-controlled media in Greece, unless the information is verified by alternative sources such as Indymedia. More often than not, they will lie and present a very different version of what has actually happened!

International news agencies seem to either be instructed directly by the Greek state on what they should publish, or instructed by their own governments to support the position of the Greek state, as most governments are at war with leftists, anarchists and immigrants, while using the far-right to take care of the dirty work. Malcolm Brabant of the BBC is an excellent example, as demonstrated recently on this article on UK Indymedia:  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2010/01/445067.html

Again, please be specific about such things and don't post single-line articles. Indymedia should aim to inform accurately, not misinform.

John
