access?

22.02.2010 21:54

please can you inform as to access arrangements for folks who, like me, use a wheelchair to get about? have you fitted a ramp to the entrance steps for example? is it all happening on the ground floor or are their internal stairs to deal with? what about the toilet(s)?

i'd really like to come but without this information i don't know if i can.

silence sure does speak a thousand words, innit. guess we got answer, guess we kind of already knew it from the fact they didn't bother telling us any access information in their original post... yet another place we are excluded from in this scene. as an anarchist it's so sad to realise that my supposed comrades make less effort to include me than the local branch of mcdonalds ffs.

there's laws now meaning every public place like museums, shops, etc have to make themselves accessible to us. sadly the anarcho scene is way behind the state on this one. fine for those wheelchair users who only want to access mainstream places but not so cool for those of us who want to contribute to and be part of anarchist activities and communities.

makes it hard to discuss anarchy with many other wheelchair users too because what they observe is that without a law to force the issue we are excluded. and i can't answer that with any clever words because they are bloody right so far.

lucky you for your temporary able-bodiedness and ability to climb steps and enjoy this event. hope you never get a spinal injury that puts you in a wheelchair like happened to me because it (or should i say other folks' apathy) will mean instant exclusion from events like this.

Access

24.02.2010 11:54

Hmmm... I've never seen this raised as an issue with any other gig mentioned on Indymedia. Access for all IS an important thing, but to make sudden aggressive attacks on the organisation of an event, rather than trying to contact the organisers/the venue as most of us would do, makes me suspicious of your motives 'Cripple' and 'Pistoff' (possibly one and the same?). Is it really accessibility you've got a problem with, or fundraising for migrants living in dangerous and freezing conditions, and coming under daily attack from the police?

@anon:

where were these posters aggressive?

why do you assume that they are attacking the event, despite other posts related to refugees/immigration not receiving this treatment?

why not assume they actually want to join in and are saddened that they can't?

instead of assuming some wierd conspiracy theory. you don't even know their own immigration status, plenty of immigrants have disabilities especially survivors of war and/or torture.

perhaps they have posted similar comments about other events and you just haven't seen them, or do you read every comment made about every event posted on this site?

they haven't attacked anyone there is no need for such defensiveness. read their actual words, instead of looking between the lines for motives that are not there.

so what if they never posted before on this subject, perhaps this was the last straw for them or perhaps they just started reading indymedia recently. perhaps they didn't know how to contact the organisers or were unsuccessful when they tried. i have no idea but i find your leap of imagination pretty freaky and worrying. they make valid points, after all. you come across as paranoid and dismissive of their very real exclusion from our scene.

i hope you are not one of the mare street squatters, i hope they take the comments in the manner they appear, and take the easy steps to rectifiy the matter, ie put a ramp in place, and from now on provide access info when they post about events. that way even in the highly unlikely event that you are right, they will be immune to such perceived attacks in future anyway because the building will be accessible to all.
