Squatted Proposed Tesco Site - Eviction Resisted This Morning In Bristol

no tescos | 09.03.2010 11:41 | Free Spaces | Globalisation | Repression

A former comedy club, Cheltenham Rd, Bristol, proposed to be yet another tesco metro, buit now turned into a temporary social center - at which there has been an event on for the last fortnight, withstood an eviction attempt this morning.

tripod, tents and supporters see off 1st eviction attempt

While it is possible that the baliffs could come back today, it seems unlikely - and I should emphasise this is based only my personal experience.

It was around 9am that I recived oinfo that jesters was being evicted by the time I got there around 30 people were already on the ground supporting with numerous others inside and on the flat roof. This included someone up a 12ft high tripod...as well as one cool looking customer in shades sitting on a deck chair next to his tent!

A passing van, decided to park right in front of where they would presumably have initial access !

There was two van loads of baliffs...they looked fairly standard...no climbing gear - and crucially in terms of the tripod - no sign of a cherry picker. This follows a pattern in building (as opposed to tree ) evictions where there is going to be resistance they turn up ready for a normal eviction, and then (after a chat with the one police car which turned up) left with out acting. It's likely that they will turn up, tooled up, possibly with climbing baliffs - most likely at a more unsocialble hour in the next few days. So keep your phone on..and if you can, come and join the people staying in the building

at 10.30 the number swelled to around 100, the bristol freeshop lads brought some crap fridges and dumped them outside the front doors , getting a rid of them and barricading the building from outside at the same time
huge barricades erected inside protecting all entrances to the building. they shall not pass!
jesters squat has a big potential to become alternative place for all sort of things, which were already taking place before and after court case.
come and help to keep the place secure and running , disobey!
why should we passively let big companies and law ruling our life without our consent in our communities? who wants this tesco there?

a not a so big deal customer in shades

if BIM isn't offline due to your incitement to criminal damage, in undisguised terms, which can avoid spaces like BIM being directly targetted by the police, it soon will be.

You are sucessfully demonstrating your ability to damage what you touch.

You may have managed to shut down your primary news outlet, and if you haven't, you no doubt soon will, and maybe UKIMC with it.

Shows you up as the brick throwing numbskulls that you are.

stop hurling abuse at the unconvinced

can those who also support the anti-tesco campaign please stop hurling abuse at those in our community not yet convinced. This habit of hurling abuse at others in our community, instead of taking the time to convince them, is putting people off!

People i've talkec to, who have questions, and may support us, already have the impression they're going to be screamed at and called 'capitalist pricks' etc, if they do anything other than toe the 'party' line, so they stay away, unsupportive as a result of our abusive behaviours.

don't be scared!

seems to be a slanging match going both ways, so no judgements necessary there flare (but yeah, the response to neon was a wee bit stronger!).

Neon, this seems to be a Bristol Indymedia thing, that I've heard of before, about criminal damage, potential threat to IMC etc - a bit obscure if no-one knows that.

But actually I don't want other IMCs in the UK drawn into it. It's like saying "don't go off and do actions from this protest camp, because the camp might get closed down, and it's about more than the actions!" Of course there are legal realities, but just because something is illegal doesn't make it wrong, and we shouldn't be scared of talking about beliefs and possible actions that - compared to the wholesale destruction of a future on this planet that is going on - really are a reasonable or mild response.
