Tesco smashed and sprayed in Fishponds, Bristol

NoTesco | 09.03.2010 16:06

Tesco Metro attacked with brick and spray paint at 2 am this morning - windows smashed and 'no more Tesco' sprayed on both sides of store

At 2 am this morning, Tesco Metro on Lodge Causeway was attacked with bricks and spray, with broken windows and "no more Tesco" sprayed on both sides of the store.

This action is not to pressure not to build more Tesco stores, but as a total rejection of all they represent. We see Tesco as extreme form of the capitalist domination that entraps and enslaves us all.

Our message is simple: if you build up, we smash down.

For a world free of capitalist exploitation and authoritarian rule (A)

by posting your incitement to criminal damage on BIM, it looks like you may have got their server seized again. You don't have the brains to put your language in a way to prevent BIM being targetted, so you've managed to piss on your own doorstep.

You talk the talk of anti-capitalism, but you are in support of other convenience stores, which have exactly the same supply chains, and detriment to the people and planet. You are aggressively play acting at politics, with tesco being a convenient target for you to vent your infantile, and unthinking, aggression on.

You are an insult to anti-capitalism.

well, done, you may have got BIM shut down!

09.03.2010 17:02

Those squats, and those within them, who are backing this are such an eyesore. Whatever happened to squats that were just empty houses, and lived in by people with some basic hygiene standards. "Modern" squats, as with "modern" activism are a parodied, horribly comical and dysfunctional insult to the principles of squatting and activism.

You've have unthinkingly posted incitement to criminal damage in a way which is guaranteed to draw police eyes to BIM itself. You have not even the brains to couch your language in a way which will not get the outlet you used shut down.

You are not representative of the community.

End Of!

"you are in support of other convenience stores"
Where does this accusation come from?

"You are aggressively play acting at politics, with tesco being a convenient target for you to vent your infantile, and unthinking, aggression on. "
A combination of ad homeinin attacks, and a frankly bizarre argument - I think it is worthwhile to attack what symbolically represents capital, so yes it is convenient in that sense. What's the problem?

"Those squats, and those within them, who are backing this are such an eyesore. Whatever happened to squats that were just empty houses, and lived in by people with some basic hygiene standards. "Modern" squats, as with "modern" activism are a parodied, horribly comical and dysfunctional insult to the principles of squatting and activism. "
All unsubstantiated and rude ad homeinen attacks.

"You are not representative of the community"
Presumably they'll represent some of the community, and not other parts. No need for your unfounded generalisation.

SHUT UP A

Can other people who support the anti-tesco campaign please stop hurling mindless abuse at those in our community not yet convinced!

It is a classic demonstration of how to alienate the community!

Bit of common sense wouldn't go amiss

09.03.2010 22:37

Not that I agree with Neon, he sounds like a right prick to be honest, but I would say just report what happened in the 3rd person and don't make threats like this. I'm not advocating self censorship, just leave out the incitement to criminal damage part. Most people on indymedia are smart enough to realise that the majority of articles about actions are written by the people who did them without having to say "look what we did, isn't it cool?"

radical knitting circle

10.03.2010 01:29

It all seems a bit petty and small minded to me. Kind of like a radical knitting circle. I mean, does anyone really give two hoots whether inner-city bristol gets a supermarket or not? It's not like its' going to be an eyesore, and it's not like it really makes much difference one way or the other.

Now, that Cabot Circus... THAT would have made a good target for the hooligan element..!

"It's not like its' going to be an eyesore..." You are joking?! Tesco is offensive in so many ways, and it will never be satisfied until it has an interest in every square inch of land in this country. You trolls are just jealous these folk got off their arses and did something. Seriously, I hope you're thoroughly analysing your contribution to activism. How much do you actually DO, and how much did you actually RANT? C'mon be honest with yourself!

Quit yer whinging and get out into the streets.

"by posting your incitement to criminal damage on BIM, it looks like you may have got their server seized again. You don't have the brains to put your language in a way to prevent BIM being targetted, so you've managed to piss on your own doorstep."

BIM has not been shut down.

And the only thing that got pissed on was Tesco.

I salute those who got up and did what was needed. I have nothing but scorn for those who have posted criticism.

The anti-Tesco campaign needs to understand that there are now activists on board who have a stellar record with fighting the 'warmongering' classes. Tesco is the next target and will need to baton down the hatches if it wants to survive. This is just the opening salvo. Things will get worse for Tesco long before they get better.

The Tesco corporation funds and abets the deaply rascist and apartheid state of Israel. It sinks millions of pounds each year into financially backing Israels military with the express intention of aiding Israel to seize land it is already occupying illegally. The corporation Tesco is a central and highly valuable financier of the occupation and stands idly by while children and women are butchered with impunity. Without Tesco, the money needed to commit many of Israels war crimes would simply not be possible.

Tesco is a very worthy target with high crimes to account for. It is the glittering jewel in the crown of Israels rascist and separatist imperialism.

Those who are attacking Tesco should not be made to feel guilty. They are just keeping the peace.

As an aside, if you are watching Tesco, I work for a private security contractor and am posting this in order to get you to pay us to 'protect' you. Its the recession. ;-)

wondering when that would start up.

I was wondering when it would get to this:

"The Tesco corporation funds and abets the deaply rascist and apartheid state of Israel. The corporation Tesco is a central and highly valuable financier of the occupation and stands idly by while children and women are butchered with impunity. Have you got any evidence for that, or are you just riffing on the ethnicity of the owners / directors of the company?

To be honest I don't think you want to bring race into this, so a link or ten to justify this outburst wouldn't go amiss.

Oh for christs sake will you please try to keep up. Do your research and you will find the evidence. DO NOT keep asking us to start all over again. Type Israel and Tesco into google and have a read. It really is very easy!

And we are not bringing race into this. To criticise Israel is not to talk in terms of race. We talk in terms of a nasty, obnoxious lethal state that is racist and determines its own identity on grounds of ethnicity. Tesco is one of a number of companies that help fund this.

the difference between capitalism and authoritarianism

11.03.2010 22:21

Authoritarian rule and true capitalism are completely different.
Capitalism means the freedom to
a) buy what you want
b) sell what you want
c) buy and sell to anybody, you choose
d) make or import what you want to buy and sell
e) prices are set by buyers and sellers, not by the government.

Look at Soviet Russia, for example. none of these things were true.

In this particular instance, Tesco's is relevant. Some bloke decided to build that Tesco's so he went and bought a franchise licence. He didn't have to do it. The government didn't order him to. And nobody has to set foot inside that shop if they don't want to. He's just doing what he wants, which is to sell stuff to willing buyers.
That sounds a lot like....
freedom.

some of us were happy to hear about these actions

11.03.2010 23:44

i don't live in bristol, but am impressed that *some* bristol people are taking direct action against tesco, rather than just moaning on web-sites about other peoples' activities. i see there's similar stuff happening in other places too, again targetting tescos.

this is not just due to their links with/ economic support of the apartheid israeli state. tescos still sell israeli produce, including items produced by illegal settlements in the west bank. in the year 200, tescos used the israeli it company tescom to deal with their y2k conversion. john porter (one of the biggest shareholders in tescos) also invests heavily in israeli companies. dame shirley porter (who some may remember from her time in westminster council?!), ie the daughter of tesco's founder, funded many zionist projects.
i don't think it's anti-semitic to point out those links. and there are plenty of jewish people who struggle for social justice (and against supermarkets), including those who live inside the state of israel and undergo far more state repression than we have to deal with here....

there are plenty of reasons why people focus on tescos - they are the biggest supermarket chain in the country and therefore arguably do the most damage, to the environment/ farmers/ workers/ independent shops/ animals etc.

those who are asking for more info, i'd suggest looking at this site:

oh, and as a squatter, i'd appreciate an apology from the person who made the cheap jibe about squatters' personal hygiene - stereotyping is never big or funny

Maybe in your hippy Ayn Rand la la land this is fine, but in practice unregulated capitalism just ends in pure oligarchy.

So people should have the freedom to buy and sell child porn, for example? Or guns to children? Loan sharks should be able to rip off vulnerable people?

To me, that sounds a lot like... naivety

People don't attack places like Tesco because they disagree with the internal colour scheme, so not setting foot inside it is irrelevant. It's the way a filthy rich juggernaut like Tesco can bribe their way into communities, destroying small businesses (even if you are completely anti-capitalist, better small than big business) and funnel millions of pounds into places like Israel, who practice state terrorism.

Even the most staunch defenders of capitalism (Adam Smith?) recognise that companies need a knee in the bollocks from an outside regulator every now and then to stop them getting out of hand. But when they are so up the arses of the government that is supposed to regulate them, that breaks down and a bit of citizen instant justice is required.
