Saturday May 1st Parliament Square - Mayday festival

London Mayday 2010 | 20.03.2010 09:35

On Saturday the first of May 2010 there will be a massive Mayday festival right in the middle of Parliament Square. This is to mark ten years since the first Mayday anti-capitalist day of action which also took place in Parliament Square. Only this time we will be there in even greater numbers! This years Mayday event also coincides with the forthcoming general election which takes place just a few days later.

Our plan is to hold the square until the day of the election. We will be there to tell the politicians that they have betrayed us - all parties time and time again. Mayday is also international workers day, but instead of joining the left in their traditional annual Mayday march which achieves nothing we will be taking real action!

Clarification

20.03.2010 10:46

This is not an anarchist event. London anarchists have reservations with the idea of this event and issues with the people behind it.

this anarchist couldn't make it to the meeting of the London Anarchists where this was debated. Could you please enlighten me.

is it the style of organizing or the aims and goals that are an issue here ? or the combination of those ?

Uhhh

As much as I despise Chris Knight I don't think you can claim 'This is not an anarchist' event. Since when did one group have a monopoly on what is or isn't an anarchist event. Shall we stop this silliness and do some proper organising?

Anarchist?

I'm not sure of one homogenous 'London Anarchists' group, but I doubt many SolFeders or AFeders will be there - that is because it is not rooted in workplace or community struggle. Instead it looks likely to be a small event firmly consolidating activist-anarchists' position in our own isolated ghetto. It is organised by Meltdown, a group with dubious politics, and Chris Knight et al are seriously worrying. They approached Climate Camp about it, and got turned away. It doesn't look set to take London by storm - or even attract many anarchists to it. I may be wrong in this, but I think even Whitechapel Anarchist Group (who'd normally be considered in the heart of the activist-anarchist ghetto) are organising an anarchist block in another march in London.

Good luck with the event I guess, but I don't think it's well thought through and I certainly won't be making the trip down to London for it. Why do you think anybody not already from within the anarchist ghetto will attend? What tangible result do you expect/hope to gain from the action (beyond a laugh and a good day out)?

the guerilla gardening event that occurred in parliament square 10 years back was only one of many actions that took place throughout britain. the rationale......think global ACT LOCAL. instaed of parliament square why not go some where where ordinary peeps both live and work and play. try and build towards a movement of peoples...............

There are many more anarchists and anarchist groups in london than just SolFEd, AFED and Whitechapel Anarchist Group. Having attended some of the meltdown meetings i can assure you that there are many anarchists involved, and its so much more than just a Chris Knight wobbly moment.
AFED, SOLFED and Whitechapel Anarchist Group may be quick to condemn the mayday planned action, but the rest of us anarchists in london are well able to make up our own mind on whether to attend, but then maybe we dont count as "proper" anarchists!
Sectarianism is destroying the little bit of unity there is in the anarchist "movement" in london. We should be supporting the mayday action despite what we think we know about the organisers. If you dont want to go, then dont go, but dont try to make out its because youre so superior and know better than the rest of us because you happen to be in the "real" anarchist clique.

also an anarchist

Sorry people but this is not well thought out. Your not fluffy climate campers and will not get away with it. Some of you know who I am, for those of you who dont 10 years was 10 years. . . I`ll be watching from the other side of the slaughter.

Trafalgar Square is a ideal place for containment..... check your history.

Sorry

In my experience, people tend to follow those four horses. People carrying them often get tired and ask nearby persons to carry them for a while as they perhaps smoke a rollie or av a can. If anyone is so inclined, they could perhaps be awfully helpful and carry the horses, my only worry is that individuals choosing to be so helpful may not have the orienteering skills necessary to reach parliament square..........
